Psalm 68:19

Antique late-19/early-20th Century French gilt print

of Our Lady of Perpetual Help

$175

Offered for sale is this charming antique late-19th/early-20th Century French gilt religious print, estimated as dating from the 1890’s to 1920’s. Despite research (and the print being left in situ) the printer could not be identified – however the word ‘imprimé’ appears in the bottom right-hand corner.

Inspired by the original 15th Century Byzantine icon (held in the Chiesa di Sant’Alfonso di Liguori in Rome), in a high level of detail it depicts ‘Our Lady of Perpetual Help’ (or ‘Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours’) in polychrome against a gold gilt ground. Mary is seen holding the child Jesus, flanked by Archangels Michael and Gabriel. There are four Greek letters above them; each representing Mary, Jesus, Michael and Gabriel.

In very good overall to excellent original condition. There is light patination appropriate for this being a correct antique item and not modern reproduction. Please note this includes two very small areas of patina (as pictured) and some light wear to the frame. The asking price takes all this into account.

Measures (framed) 42.8cm (h) x 32.5cm (w) x 2.6cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. As with any vintage watch I recommend allowing for a service. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. ITEM: OC25007

LARGE Vintage 20th Century Folk Art copperart

Jesus of the Flaming Heart

$135

Offered for sale is this unique large vintage 20th Century hand-made Folk Art copper art religious picture, estimated as dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. The artist could not be identified, and interestingly another example could not be found for comparison. The original framer was Mahoneys of Geelong, Victoria (their label having a five-digit telephone number).

The engaging design features a large rectangular copper sheet form with hand-applied decoration (repoussé and punchwork) and finishes. Set against a textured ground, using a Folk Art style the artist has skillfully formed a classical Catholic image of Jesus - including the Stigmata and Flaming Heart. At least 1,000+ individual punch-holes that have gone into providing the outline of Christ! A series of acid-treatments and other washes have then been applied, with the artist deliberately leaving a ‘raw’ shiny finish to highlight the hands, heart, halo and face of Jesus. This creates shifting and engaging patterns of light and texture when viewed from different angles.

Perfect for respectful veneration or as a decorative piece.

In excellent overall original condition. There is patination appropriate with this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures (framed) 41.5cm (h) x 67.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

These are all held by a series of small pins. Reflecting its hand-made nature, of interest is the mounting hole being off-centre.

Perfect for respectful veneration or as a decorative piece.

ITEM: JN25034

UNIQUE Vintage 20th Century Australian religious painting attributed to Mother Margaret Mary (Bourke)

$175

Offered for sale is this unique large antique/vintage 20th Century original Australian religious painting (mixed media on card), attributed to/created under the direction of Mother Margaret Mary (Bourke) and estimated as dating from the 1910’s to the 1930’s. Born Brigid Bourke in Ireland in 1887, she received an extensive classical education in Ireland and Brussels before sailing to Australia in 1908 to pursue her desire of entering a religious order. Continued study upon arrival saw Brigid graduate with honours from the University of Melbourne, then enter the Brigidine Novitstat at Albert Park (receiving the name Mother Margaret Mary) and finally become a Catholic Nun in 1912. Mother Mary’s religious service for the next fifty years would focus on the education of girls and young women (in stark contrast to the social (and literal) restrictions placed upon female education for most of the 20th Century). This passion for developing equality, independence and confidence would most strongly express itself in her extensive tenure at Kilbreda College (a Melbourne Roman Catholic girls’ school, founded in Mentone in 1904 by the Brigidine Sisters). An initial association with (what was then called St Brigid’s High School) saw Mother Mary return as Principal in 1927; holding the role for 39 years until retirement in 1965. During this time the school would thrive and grow from 110 annual students to 1,000. Mother Margaret Mary holds an important place in Melbourne’s religious, social and educational history.

The design features a mixed media (oil and ink) polychrome design applied to a heavy brown card, the ground being left undecorated. A central rectangular, stylised eight-part wooden frame supports an entwined uppermost fruiting grapevine and angled crucifix with lower Crown of Thorns. This surrounds hand-applied calligraphic text: ‘The heart of Jesus finds its delight in the service of the humble of heart & abundantly blesses their work. B.Margaret Mary.’.

Measures (framed) 69cm (h) x 83.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand watch it may need a service, and is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).

ITEM: DE24032

Vintage 20th Century original hardwood statue of

Madonna and Child/Motherhood

$50

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original hardwood sculpture. Despite research the country of origin and maker are currently unknown. This well-carved and nicely-detailed figure provides two possible interpretations: either a classical representation of The Madonna and Child; or an equally powerful depiction of motherhood.

The design itself features an elongated, robed woman holding an infant within her closed arms. Mounted on an ovoid base, the craftsperson has taken great care to utilise the original, angled form of the timber for the main body (which from the side gives a ‘moving forward’ dynamic) and skill to impart a high level of detail. The robes drape with their natural weight, while at the same time emphasise the idea of movement. The human form is well-captured with subtlety and nuance, the woman’s face having particular attention to her hair (which flows around both sides of the hood) and expression that is warm, gentle and knowing.

A powerful and enjoyable original work or art - perfect for respectful veneration or as a purely decorative piece.

In very good original condition. There is some patination, as expected from a vintage item and not modern reproduction. The hardwood was gently nourished with a natural beeswax to protect and enhance the timber.

Measures 18.5cm (h) x 5.7x4.5cm (ovoid diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. ITEM: DE24008

LARGE original Vintage 20th Century Swiss artwork of

St Mary Magdelene

$125

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century original portraiture pastel/chalk-on-masonite artwork, most likely from Switzerland and dating from 1969. Despite extensive research (and multiple attempts to decipher the signature) further information on the artist (a P Stackmann/Stackmani/Shelmann/Slielmann/Shidmann/Shilmann/Glickmann?) cannot currently be provided. Was originally framed by W Burghardt in the Swiss village of Horden (on Lake Zurich).

In a wonderfully skilled hand and engaging style, the artist has captured a deeply-humanistic portrait of Saint Mary Magdelene. Depicted in her classical red robes, with downcast eyes and soft, enigmatic smile (very much in the manner of da Vinci’s ‘The Mona Lisa’) her head and shoulders have been smartly framed with a background ‘halo’ that cleverly outlines this pose. It has created a warm moment, a feeling of quiet repose and reflection.

Being deliberately created on the reverse of the board (using its grooved texture) has meant the colour is dispersed, so that your eyes bring the image ‘together’ when viewed at a distance. This adds a soft glow and textural warmth.

Possibly inspired by an existing (probably Renaissance) artwork or a unique example of this artist’s work.

A bold piece or original art for veneration or decoration in any church, home or business.

In very good overall original condition. There are two smudge marks that the asking price takes into account (as pictured).

Measures (framed) 84.5cm (h) x 64.5cm (w) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: JL24018

Antique 20th Century German porcelain Holy Water font

by Gebrüder Heubach

$95

Offered for sale is this antique early-20th Century German glazed ceramic Holy Water font, made by Gebrüder Heubach and dating circa 1900. The factory commenced operation in 1840 under brothers Georg and Philip Heubach. By the late-19th Century it had become renowned for making high-quality dolls heads (most well-known is their ‘laughing/giggling baby’ doll), figurines and statuary, staying in family hands until going bankrupt in 1937. At this point it was directly saved by the invention of Otto Freidrich III, recommencing production before being transferring into staff ownership in 1994 as Lichte Porzellan (but has now ceased production). Fully hallmarked, with ‘Germany’ and with model number 18210 on the reverse.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (also known as the Little Flower or Little Flower of Jesus), is one of the most well-known and popular modern Catholic saints. She was born in France in 1873 and joined a Carmelite community at the age of 15 in 1888. Often unwell and frail throughout her short life, she passed away at the age of 24 (in 1897) from tuberculosis, her struggle and humility capturing the popular attention of the French public before being canonised in May 1925 by Pope Pius XI. The Basillica of Saint Thérèse (in Lisieux) is the second-most popular pilgrimage site in French after Lourdes.

Moulded in bisque porcelain, the design features an upper central arched plaque of Saint Thérèse (holding a crucifix and bunch of roses) flanked by two uprights inset with three individual roses. The lower portion is a dished half-ovoid font form with central band, styled as a pulpit. There is some gold gilding (a halo and within the central band).

A charming piece for respectful worship or purely as decorator’s item for any home or business.

In excellent condition, no cracks or chipping.

Measures 9.2cm (h) x 6.3cm (w) x 4.5cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

ITEM: AP24033

RARE Antique/Vintage 20th Century Australian statue of

Saint Thérèse by Trica Picchi

$275

Offered for sale is this rare antique/vintage 20th Century Australian painted plaster/chalkware votive statue of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (also known as the Little Flower or Little Flower of Jesus), made by the Melbourne firm Triaca and Picchi (most likely dating from the late-1920’s to 1930’s). One of the most well-known and popular modern Catholic saints, Saint Thérèse was born in France in 1873 and joined a Carmelite community at the age of 15. Often unwell and frail throughout her short life, she passed away at the age of 24 from tuberculosis and was canonised in May 1925 by Pope Pius XI. The Basillica of Saint Thérèse (in Lisieux) is the second-most popular pilgrimage site in French after Lourdes.

Born in Tuscany (1887), Italian sculptor Camilo Triaca showed early artistic talent and eventually travelled to the USA to sell his religious and art statues. He arrived in Melbourne in 1909 and established a sculpture workshop in Richmond before serving in the Italian army during WW1 and returning to Melbourne in 1923. After this time he moved his workshop to Fitzroy (76-78 King William Street) and continued producing a range of studio, religious as well as commercial statuary. Camilo was also one of Melbourne’s early Italian restauranteurs; operating a popular, bohemian-inspired restaurant known as ‘The Latin’ (at 206 Exhibition Street) from the mid-1920’s until the 1950’s (when his son moved its location and kept operating until the early 1980’s). He passed away in 1972.

The elegant design features Saint Thérèse depicted with classical imagery of her carrying roses (and strewn at her feet) surrounding a crucifix. The modelling has a good level of detail, complimented by its simple polychromatic colour palate. The attention given to her face is particularly charming - adding a warm, serene and humanistic feeling (especially seen in the eyes).

This piece has genuine presence - a rare example of domestic Australian religious statuary for respectful veneration and/or decoration.

In very good original condition. There are some very small loses (which could be easily restored if felt necessary), however the genuine patination of its history has been respected - reflecting this being a proper antique/vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 41.3cm (h) x 13cm (w) x 9.5cm (d) approximately.

In 2010, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart commissioned the Milanese firm of Colombo Medaglie to create two official items to celebrate the canonisation of Saint Mary MacKillop on 17 October (by Pope Bendict XVI) of that year. This recognition was the culmination of a process that had taken over 100 years, confirming that she had lived a holy life exhibiting the virtues of faith, hope and charity, and of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance; having expressed those to a heroic degree.

The highly detailed design by renowned Italian sculptor Vito Valentino Cimarosti features a front-on image of Saint Mary MacKillop in habit and with a crucfix. Above this appears her beautified name and on either side her birthdate of 1842 and passing in 1909. The reverse has a stylised image of Australia set with meridian points, the Southern Cross appearing in the lower left corner and words ‘Australia’s First Saint 2010’ overarching. The medal has then been professionally set into a clear resin mount.

A charming piece for respectful veneration or decoration.

Measures 8.5cm (h) x 8.5cm (w) x 2cm (d) approximately.

RARE late-19th/early-20th Century mother-of-Pearl and

olive wood Last Supper diorama

$750

Offered for sale is this stunning antique late-19th/early-20th Century mother-of-pearl and olive wood ‘Last Supper’ diorama, most likely dating from 1875 to 1910 and made in (what would then have been called) Palestine during the Ottoman Empire period.

An extremely rare item to be offered onto the Australian market.

The intricate design (consisting of almost 200 individually carved and/or pierced pieces) is probably modelled on Leonardo Da Vinci’s representation of this seminal event in the life of Jesus. Central is Christ Himself, surrounded by the Twelve Apostles. Behind Him, a window frames the Temple of Jerusalem. Atop the frame is a finial with a representation of Christ emerging from the tomb after The Resurrection. An incredible amount of work, craftsmanship and hours would have been painstakingly invested to create this souvenir of the Holy Land.

Prices vary hugely for these (up to $USD50,000/AUD$ for large, ornate examples and starting at UK£1,700/AUD$3,200 for smaller ones) depending upon condition and quality. This piece would sit comfortably in the middle in terms of its quality, smaller size and level of detail.

There are some losses to the mother-of-pearl but no actual damage (eg chipping). You could have the missing elements professionally reinstated, however in my opinion its current condition honestly reflects the 100 years of use use by previous owners as a sublime venerative object. The outer glass was carefully cleaned, however the internal surface has been left untouched (as this would involve disassembly).

The quality, method of construction, oxidation to the olive wood and stand pin (plus comparison to other examples) have all been assessed to provide the date attribution. Please feel free to do your own research before purchase.

Measures (with stand extended) 21cm (h) x 20.5cm (w) x 14cm (d) approximately.

New Age guardian

$45
