Vintage 20th Century Chinese Buddha ceramic plate

LARGE Vintage 20th Century Indian repoussé gilt copper Perahara/Sacred Procession of Buddha's Tooth wall plaque

$125

Offered for sale is this excellent large vintage 20th Century Indian repoussé/hand-chased gilt copper ‘perahara’ wall plaque, made post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s. It depicts the famous annual Sri Lankan Kandy Esala Perahara (held in July or August), which celebrates the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.

The well-detailed design features a rectangular, gilded-copper form with hand-applied repoussé/hand-chased decoration (using a Naive/Stylised manner) and two brazed hangers. Central to the scene is a decorated and canopied elephant, surrounded on either side by a procession of fifteen musicians and priests/attendants. The musicians are wonderfully engaged and animated whilst those protecting the elephant and carrying banners/flags have a more contrasting, solemn feel to their involvement. This dynamic moment of worship sits recessed in an angled ‘framing’ device, with the outer raised gallery having a repeated foliate element.

The attention to detail and quality of the work throughout places it as an earlier/older example – as more-modern pieces are very cursory and lacking in detail.

An excellent piece for respectful worship as well as a purely decorative item.

In very good overall original condition. There is patination appropriate for this being a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 17.5 (h) x 61cm (l) x 1cm (d) cm approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final

Small secondhand Tibetan Green Tara statue in gilt metal

$35

Offered for sale is this small secondhand Tibetan Bodhisattva Green Tara votive plated metal statue, most likely created within the last 20 years. The figure shows no magnetic quality so may be an alloy.

An important female Buddha, Green Tara is revered within Tibet and by Mahayana, Vajrayana and Newar Buddhists worldwide. Known as ‘the mother of all Buddhas’, she is considered a saviour – being meditated upon and associated with fertility, wisdom, relief from suffering as well as the overcoming of obstacles and misfortune.

The design features a multi-part cast metal construction with applied gilding. In a high level of detail it depicts Green Tara seated on a lotus throne with her left hand in the Prithvi Mudra ‘Gesture of Earth’ position (signifying healing and balance of earth and water elements in the body) and right hand the Gyan Mudra (to assist with focus, meditation and knowledge). The base features a separate internal plate (held by two screws) with an internal void and being externally stamped with the sacred Vajra symbol.

An item for respectful veneration or as a decorative piece.

In very good overall original condition. There is unique patination appropriate with this being a secondhand item.

2 x Vintage 20th Century Japanese wooden plaques

of Buddhist figures

$45

Offered for sale is this charming pair of fun vintage 20th Century Japanese softwood wall-plaques, made post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1960’s to 1980’s.

The design of each features a stylised relief representation of Buddhist figures crafted in hand-carved softwood with varnished finish. The first depicts a smiling bearded and bald man (most likely an Immortal or wise monk/sage) and the second a classical representation of Hotei/Budai (or the ‘Smiling/Laughing Buddha’). Not to be confused with actual Buddha, the figure of Hotei/Budai is derived from an actual Chinese monk who lived around 1000AD. He become well-known for living an eccentric, wandering lifestyle that included a love of eating and drinking (often to excess) and possessing an outgoing, happy personality (as well as large belly). As Hotei, in Japan he is considered one of the seven ‘lucky gods’. His image and appearance are considered to bring wealth, abundance, positivity, happiness and good fortune.

Both are in very good original condition. There is patination appropriate for these being proper vintage items and not modern reproductions.

The first plaque measures 14cm (h) x 12cm (w) x 2cm (d) and second 11cm (h) x 13.5cm (w) x 2cm (d) approximately.

Offered for sale is this charming small vintage 20th century hardwood caved Buddha statue, estimated as dating from the 1980’s to 1990’s. Despite research the country of origin could not be determined.

In a nice level of detail (unlike more modern examples which are very rudimentary), the carver has captured the Buddha seated in Lotus meditation pose with eyes closed and hands clasped together in the Uttarabodhi Mudra (symbolising perfection/connection with a supreme power). Particular attention has been paid to the expression of the Buddha - having an engaging humanist quality.

ITEM: SE25046

8 x Antique/Vintage 20th Century Tibetan/Bhutanese

gilt copper yöngchap bowls

$795

Offered for sale is stunning collection of eight antique/vintage 20th Century Tibetan/Bhutanese yönchap (ཡོན་ཆབ་) repoussé copper, silver and gold gilt offering/water bowls. Common practice across Tibet and Bhutan, Yonchap is the daily Buddhist cultural practice of offering a series of bowls (usually seven, sometimes eight) containing water (the cleanest possible) and other items. Every bowl represents different elements of prayer - when used as a set of seven, two hold water and five have ‘utility’ objects (flowers, incense, butter candle, perfume, food). When used as a set of eight, the last has a representation of music.

The design of each features a low, dished hand-beaten cup form in copper with extensive decoration (repoussé work and gilding). The copper would appear to have been hand-cut from a flat sheet then beaten over a mould to form the cup. All have a series of four separate medallions which combine symbols of the Noble Eightfold Path, being the:

- Lotus (meaning transformation and acceptance)
- Conch Shell (the sound of Dharma being shared)
- Dharma wheel (the Buddha’s teachings, or Noble Eightfold Path)
- Endless/Eternal Knot (which has various interpretations, from the interrelation of everything to never-ending growth through the dharma)
- Umbrella (safety/protection/refuge by the teachings of the Buddha)
- Fish (freedom from suffering and delusion)
- Vase (symbolising the potential of enlightenment for growth and gifts of dharma practice)
- Victory banner (the victory of Buddhist teachings over ignorance, delusion, hatred and anger)

Having four medallions is another reference to the Buddha’s teaching; of not only nurturing love in our hearts, but spreading it everywhere: `in one direction, then a second, a third and a fourth, above, below, all around, everywhere, to others as to oneself. One should live pervading the great wide world with the mind filled with an abundant and exalted love that is freed from anger and ill-will'.

The cartouche are separated by stylised lotus flower foliage against a textured ground, the external rim having a repeated gallery of triangular shapes with a recurring angled ‘feather’ motif.

Every cup in this set is unique, all have slight differences in design and size. Over time and with use each bowl has developed its own patination, appropriate for these being correct antique/vintage items and not modern reproductions. Please note a previous owner has externally cleaned one.

Due to their variation, as a guide each measures around 3.5cm (h) x 8.4cm (diameter).

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Vintage 20th Century Chinese small soapstone statue

of Budai/Hotei

$75

Offered for sale is this small vintage 20th Century Chinese soapstone statue of Budai ‘the laughing/happy Buddha’ (also known as ‘Hotei’ in Japan). Not to be confused with actual Buddha, the figure of Budai/Hotei is derived from an actual Chinese monk who lived around 1000AD.

In a nice level of detail the design features a one-piece, hand-carved form in cream soapstone on an angled ovoid base. It depicts Budai at rest; his happy, jowly face and rotund stomach prominent. His left arm supports his head and in his right, holds a string of Buddhist prayer beads.

Vintage 20th Century Japanese? ebonised hardwood statue

of Buddhai/Hotei

$55

Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th Century ebonised hardwood statue of ‘the laughing/happy Buddha’ (also known as ‘Budai’ in China or ‘Hotei’ in Japan), most likely Japanese in origin and dating post-WW2. Not to be confused with the actual Buddha, the figure of Budai/Hotei is derived from an actual Chinese monk who lived around 1000AD.

The well-crafted design features a stylised human form presenting a classical, seated representation of Hotei – with open robe, large stomach and drooping chest. His right hand holds a fan; the left has a string of Buddhist prayer beads held against his raised knee. Of particular interest is the subtly expressive and deeply humanistic quality of the carving found in the happy, rounded face – alert eyes with a knowing glance, a fine nose and mouth openly poised as if about to warmly laugh.

In very good original condition. There is some patination to the ebonising, as expected from a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction. As pictured, a small loss has occurred to the lower portion of his sash.

ITEM: MR25008

Vintage 20th Century Tibetan gilt metal Buddha

in bhumisparsha mudra pose

$135

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Tibetan gilded metal Buddha, estimated as dating from post-WW2 and before the 1980’s.

Possibly made by the ‘lost wax’ method, its design shows the Buddha in classical padmasana (double lotus) meditation pose on a lotus throne. His hands are in the bhumisparsha mudra (‘Calling the Earth to witness’) position (left hand upwards on the lap, right hand with inward facing palm pointing to the earth). This significant image represents the final moment of enlightenment for the Buddha.

The construction appears to be silver gilt over two other metals: possibly a brass or bronze middle layer and core consisting of another metal (possibly brass, bronze or copper). The piece shows no magnetic qualities and remains cool to the touch.

Perfect for respectful worship or purely as a decorative item.

In overall very good original condition. Over time and with veneration there is patination and loss to the plating (one small spot showing the three metals). The base shows appropriate wear for this being a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 8cm (h) x 5.7cm (w) x 4.4cm.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. ITEM: AP24027

Vintage 20th Century Tibetan Buddhist brass/copper

lidded and footed bowl

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Tibetan Buddhist brass and copper lidded bowl, made post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1950’s to 1980’s.

The design features a lidded, straight-sided bowl form set on a trio of lions-paw feet and decorated with a rich variety of auspicious Buddhist symbols. The lid features a central boss representing the Wheel of Life with stupa-style finial. Surrounding this are: a dharma wheel (the Buddha’s teachings, or Noble Eightfold Path), the Endless/Eternal Knot (which has various interpretations, from the interrelation of everything to neverending growth through the dharma) and The Umbrella (safety/protection/refuge by the teachings of the Buddha). Its sides have three stylised peacocks (strength and perseverance), The Fish (freedom from suffering and delusion), The Vase (symbolising the potential of enlightenment for growth and gifts of dharma practice) and another repeat of The Umbrella.

Having three feet is another Buddhist reference, perhaps relating to the Three Jewels (representing the integral pieces of the path towards enlightenment: the Buddha, the sangha and the dharma).

In very good original condition. Over time the metals have developed a unique patination, with the copper lid especially taking on deep olivaceous-brown tone.

The maker and country of origin is unknown. Not to be confused with actual Buddha, the figure of Budai/Hotei is derived from an actual Chinese monk who lived around 1000AD.
