Vintage 20th Century Brutalist-style copper cuff bracelet

$55

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century copper and silver metal cuff bracelet, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1980’s. Despite research the craftsperson is unknown.

The unusual and bold design features a broad cuff set with a series of trailing, organic shapes. Perhaps inspired by Brutalist and Post-Modern jewellery design, the talented craftsperson has allowed the flux to form an integral part of the design. This reflects an experimental confidence - by letting all aspects of the work’s creation inform its unique outcome.

A strong statement piece of vintage jewellery - you will not find another exactly like this!

In very good original condition. Over time the copper has deeply patinated, reflecting this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 3.8cm (w) x 7.5cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Vintage 20th Century Indian Thanjuvar silver/brass/copper

art plaque

$145

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Indian Thanjavur silver, brass and copper art plate/plaque, made in Tamil Nadu (southern India) and most likely dating from the 1930’s to 1960’s. Now culturally-protected, this unique metal handcraft was originally created during the 18th/19th Century Maratha rule of Rajah Serfoji-II. It is a highly-regarded skill and still made today by a strictly-limited number of families (who have inherited the techniques and authority to produce them).

The design features a series of inset silver and copper pressed panels surrounding a central inset silver boss. The central boss depicts a reclining rajah (on a bed with stylised floral support) surrounded by rich drapery and holding a large panchapatra panchapatram vase – so he may be conducting the Hindu puja (पूजा ) ceremony. Working outwards from this scene, there are two inset textured copper bands that lead to series of rising steps. The middle step has fifty-six (56) individual domed circular copper and brass beads, each framed with round punch-marks. The outer step (which gently angles backwards to meet the rolled rim) contains five silver and five copper repeated inset panels with a stylised peacock and foliage.

In excellent original condition. Over time the metals have taken on a patination that reflects this being a proper antique/vintage piece and not modern reproduction.

Measures 28cm (diameter) x 1cm (h) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

RARE Antique 20th Century brass and pressed-metal firescreen with Egyptian pyramids and camel desert scene

$145

Offered for sale is this rare antique 20th Century pressed-metal, brass and wood firescreen, most likely English in origin and estimated as dating from the 1920’s (during the third ‘Egyptomania’ revival). Despite research the maker is currently unknown.

For the hundreds and hundreds of screens with hunting dogs, scenes of villagers/villages, windmills and flying ducks etc, you’ll find a much more interesting version such as this example.

The central design features an exotic, imaginary scene combining Egyptian desert and Nile landscapes – complete with large pyramid, camel (with bedouin rider), date palms and traditional felucca (river boat). This has been mounted in an outer, textured brass surround on a wooden frame and fitted with brass carry-handle and two split-form feet.

A charming decorative piece (as well as practical for anyone with a fireplace) for any lover of ancient Egypt, home or business.

In very good original condition - both the pressed-metal, brass surround and fittings have deeply patinated over time. Sits nicely on the split feet.

Measures (including fittings) 74cm (h) x 74cm (w) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: MY24002

RARE Vintage 20th Century brass paperweight of luxury speedboat

$125

Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century cast brass paperweight, most likely dating from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Despite research the maker is currently unknown - and another example of this type could not be found for comparison.

Cast in heavy brass, the stylised design captures a luxury speedboat of the 1920’s to 1950’s. Often called ‘Mahogany boats’, this would be the sort of pleasurecraft seen on Sydney Harbour, Lake Como in Switzerland or Great Lakes of the USA. Living ‘la dolce vita’! To add a sense of dynamism and movement, the artist has cleverly set the speedboat making a banked turn.

In very good original condition. Over time the brass has developed a deep patination, as expected from an antique/vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 23cm (l) x 5.5cm (at widest) x 3cm (at highest) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century USA-made brass/enamelled metal belt buckle for Andeker Beer

$65

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century USA-made brass, cast metal and enamelled belt buckle. Created by Raintree for Andeker Beer and dating from 1978. Introduced by Pabst Brewery of Milwaukee in 1939 and discontinued in the 1960’s, this European-style beer was revived during the 1970’s before production ceased again in the mid-1980’s. It has been brought back into current, limited production at the company’s heritage micro-brewery site.

The eye-catching design features a large brass buckle with curving scrolled borders, inset with a cast metal and enamelled logo for Andeker Beer.

In very good original condition. There is some light patination, reflecting this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 6.5cm (h) x 9cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: AP24020

Antique 18th/19th Century Sri Lankan silver and copper killotaya betel nut container

$750

Offered for sale is this antique late-18th/early-19th Century Sri Lankan silver-inlaid-on-copper killotaya lime paste (chunam) box, estimated as dating from the 1780’s to 1850’s. The cultural development of killotaya’s derives from the south-east Asian culture of chewing betel nut and/or leaf. Within Sri Lanka it was believed that to avoid being poisoned by your enemies, having your own personal supply of chunam (used to cause a chemical reaction when chewing) was an effective solution – hence the development of individual, portable containers that would reflect the status of their owners (eg some were made of precious metals inset with gemstones). These unique containers are a Sinhalese domestic item and were not intended for the tourist trade. Their principal region of origin is the kingdom of Kandy (central Sri Lanka).

A rare find in the Australian market.

This higher-status example follows classical killotaya design - having two copper discs (inset with silver), and silver hinge/side mounts/upper hinged pin-clasp. Each disc has a central stylised floral motif with dividing dual-rings and outer wave-form. Almost all silver fittings are engraved with a variety of decoration: alternate banding, segmented galleries and floral sprays.

In very good original condition. No dents, the clasp and hinge both work correctly. Over time the silver and copper have deeply patinated, reflecting this being a proper antique item and not modern reproduction. The original spatula and chain is not present.

Measures (closed) 6.2cm (h) x 5.3cm (w) x 2.4cm (d) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

ITEM: AP24015

Vintage 20th Century Tibetan brass and copper lidded and footed bowl with Buddhist symbols

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Tibetan brass and copper lidded bowl, made post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1950’s to 1980’s.

The design features a lidded, straight-sided bowl form set on a trio of lions-paw feet and decorated with a rich variety of auspicious Buddhist symbols. The lid features a central boss representing the Wheel of Life with stupa-style finial. Surrounding this are: a dharma wheel (the Buddha’s teachings, or Noble Eightfold Path), the Endless/Eternal Knot (which has various interpretations, from the interrelation of everything to neverending growth through the dharma) and The Umbrella (safety/protection/refuge by the teachings of the Buddha). Its sides have three stylised peacocks (strength and perseverance), The Fish (freedom from suffering and delusion), The Vase (symbolising the potential of enlightenment for growth and gifts of dharma practice) and another repeat of The Umbrella.

Having three feet is another Buddhist reference, perhaps relating to the Three Jewels (representing the integral pieces of the path towards enlightenment: the Buddha, the sangha and the dharma).

Perfect for votive worship, as a decorative piece or for storing trinkets.

In very good original condition. Over time the metals have developed a unique patination, with the copper lid especially taking on deep olivaceous-brown tone.

Measures (with lid fitted) 9.2cm (h) x 14cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Germany embossed copper wall-plaque

by GEKRA

$55

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century German-made pressed and hand-chased copper plate/wall plaque, made by GEKRA most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. GEKRA was a well-known domestic maker of interior design items for the domestic German market.

Created on heavy copper the eye-catching Medieval Gothic design features a three-leaf clover, each leaf inset with the three crowns of Köln (Cologne) and individual banners stating in latin: ‘Colonia salve felix’ (‘Hail, happy Cologne’). Surrounding the central boss is fine gadrooning that rises to the outer rim - set with raised roundels on a plenished ground. This image originally came from a series of 16th Century playing cards from a game called ‘Round card’ (printed by the mysterious ‘Master P W’).

A charming interior design piece, especially for history lovers. For tarot devotees, there is also a connection to the symbols of the tarot with the historical in Tarock (german for tarot) and related card games from southern Germany.

Can be put on a flat surface of wall-hung (as pictured).

In very good condition. Over time the copper has deeply patinated and taken on a warm colour, reflecting it being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 34.5cm (diameter) x 2cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. ITEM: FE24013

Vintage 20th Century Atomic Age-style plenished copper

letter/mobile phone holder

$35

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century ‘Atomic Age’ textured-copper footed letter holder, most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s and probably Australian in origin. There is no makers mark evident; and despite research another example could not be found - so this may be a one-off article of Shed Work or perhaps a student piece.

The charming and fun design features a single copper sheet that’s been entirely hand-plenished before being folded with a rectangular channel and two rounded triangular sides. To this has been silver-brazed two curved brass rods with fitted soft-rubber stops - it looks like it could come to life and walk away! Of extra interest is that the maker has deliberately set the foot length so it sits at a slight angle.

Can be appreciated as much as a piece of Mid-Century Modern sculpture, or easily repurposed to hold a mobile phone (as pictured, not included), small tablet device or for its original purpose – letters.

In very good original condition. Over time the copper has patinated into warm colour that reflects it being a proper vintage piece and not modern reproduction.

Measures (including feet) 10cm (h) x 15.5cm (l) x 5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. RARE antique 19th Century Australian-made Adney Level/Clinometer by Flavelle Roberts

$245

Offered for sale is this rare antique late-19th Century Adney level and clinometer, made in Australia by Flavelle & Roberts (Sydney and Brisbane) and dating from between 1880 (when the Adney level is estimated to have been invented) and 1892 (when the firm was renamed Flavelle, Roberts and Sankey). The originally Sydney-based firm (which eventually became domestically famous for its high-quality jewellery, optical and scientific instruments) operated in various iterations from 1847 until 1921.

A hard-to-find example of a domestically-made scientific instrument of the Victorian era.

In very good overall condition. Over time the metal has patinated and bubble level has been broken (which you could have restored) – yes the price reflects this.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: JA24010

Antique late-19th/early-20th Cent Anglo-Indian hand-chased brass plate

$175

Offered for sale is this antique late-19th/early-20th Century Anglo-Indian cast-brass and hand-chased platter, most likely dating from the 1880’s to 1920’s and from the Hindu Kush or Kashmir regions. There is the remains of a sticker (from a previous owner, born in 1917) that has been left in situ for further attribution work (if felt necessary).

Set within a pie-crust border, this charming example of classical Indian metalwork depicts a historical scene of a Mughal prince being hunted (probably whilst hunting, but there’s irony for you) by a pair of lions. With kanjar dagger drawn, his backwards gaze is ready to deal with the lion attacking to the rear; but unfortunately this means the lion at the front is being ignored. There is a genuine tension in this piece, as we all know what’s going to happen next – but the prince doesn’t.

For the ocean of mass-produced vintage Indian brass pieces, you can tell this is a quality item and therefore rare. The heavy, hand-cast (not lathe-turned or stamped) plate still shows where multiple runners have been broken off. Please note the casting process has produced a slight uneveness. The entire design has been hand-chased, with no two areas of patterning the same. This reflects its nature as truly unique, hand-made – no other will be exactly the same!

In very good original condition. Over time the brass has patinated into a deep olivaceous-brown that reflects it being a proper antique and not modern reproduction. The platter was carefully cleaned (using water only), dried and a protective layer of natural beeswax applied to respect and protect its unique appearance.

Measures 32cm (diameter) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: JA24004

Antique early 20th Century German WMF Jugendstil/Vienna Secessionist-style brass tray

$65

Offered for sale is this charming antique early 20th Century German Jugendstil/Vienna Secessionist style brass metal serving tray/cake basket, made by Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik Geislingen (WMF) and dating from around 1910 (hallmarked with emu in arch cartouche).

The ovoid form with pierced handles is a fine example of elegance and refined design that reflects the energetic optimism of the early 20th Century, pre-WW1. A slightly raised, elongated star runs along the base then meets the rise towards the handles - as well as two embossed triangular groups of stylised flowers on each side.

In very good original condition, there is patination to the finish that confirms this as being a proper antique piece and not modern reproduction (as pictured).

Measures 32.5cm (l) x 18.5cm (w) x 4.5cm (d) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Antique Late-19th/Early-20th Century Anglo-Indian repouseé brass bowl

$125

Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century/20th Century Indian repouseé and chased brass bowl, most likely from the Punjab/Northern India region and dating from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s.

There are two ways of interpreting the primary, duplicated image of a seated male figure seen on this excellent example of Indian craftsmanship. The first is it perhaps shows a Mughal-era warrior, clenching a small dagger (perhaps a dha) in each hand – calm, poised and ready for battle. The second is it may depict a holy man or Sadhu/Yogi, in a meditation pose and holding a flame (representing enlightenment) in each palm. Completing the design are two heraldic bosses, each set with a stylised bird – possibly a sacred animal such as the Blood Pheasant (venerated in the Northern Indian state of Sikkim). Surrounding all panels are stylised foliate elements depicting perhaps acanthus, pomegranate and lotus root.

Incredible to think all this was hand-worked and therefore an individual piece of artwork.

In very good original condition. The seams of where the bowl was originally lapped together are visible; this is not damage but indicates and authenticates its hand-made quality and old age of manufacture using pre-industrial machinery skills.

Measures 11.2cm (h) x 11.5cm (diameter) approximately.

UNIQUE vintage 20th Century Australian? brass firescreen artwork conversion

$65

Offered for sale is this unique vintage 20th Century Australian-made pressed-brass ‘The Alchemist’ firescreen, now mounted as a wall-art piece. Most likely made by Myttons Ltd (who had factories in Port and South Melbourne) and dating from the 1930’s to 1950’s.

What was originally a practical household item has now become an attractive piece of art – a great bit of recycling by a previous owner! This may be a one-off example of this sort of clever conversion. The original screen has been trimmed to fit, with a furniture draw-pull handle added to the reverse to allow for hanging.

The design features a bearded alchemist in their laboratory, running an experiment to turn base metals into gold. Surrounding him is a wonderful variety of curiosities, lab equipment and assistants working away. Over time the brass has developed a wonderful deep patination. Alchemy (well chemistry actually) at work!

Measures 76cm (w) x 63cm (h) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Egyptian/Egyptomania collection

$65

Offered for sale is this collection of vintage 20th Century Egyptian/Egyptian-themed items, dating post-WW1.

Included are three pressed and decorated copper wall-hanging plates, made in Egypt and which most likely date from 1922 to-mid 1900’s. The first and second depict profile views of a pharaoh and his queen (it’s not sure if she became a mummy). The third shows an image of a pharoah on the river Nile, with attendants gathering food. These style of designs were hugely influenced by (and copied from) objects found in the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 - spurring another round of ‘Egyptomania’ during the Art Deco period. Each measures 22cm (diameter) approximately.  Over time all have developed a soft patination and some wear that confirms their authenticity as genuine vintage pieces and not modern reproductions.

The fourth item is a gold-plated profile image of a pharoah, set on an attractive piece of deep-green mottled marble and probably dating from the 1970’s. Curiously, this is made in Taiwan! Measures 5cm x 5cm x 2cm approximately. There is a small amount of wear the pharoah’s cheek, which confirms it being a genuine vintage item and not modern reproduction.

A charming decorative group for home, business or any lover of ancient history.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
