Antique 19th/20th Century Anglo-Indian Benares/Varanasi hand-chased brass platter
$345
Offered for sale is this excellent antique 19th/20th Century Anglo-Indian hand-chased brass platter, most likely created in the city of Benares/Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh region) and estimated as dating from the 1870’s to early 1900’s.
The intricate and highly-detailed design features a heavy, cast-brass tray form (having a raised and angled lip) with extensive hand-applied decoration. A central boss of four circles (with stylised foliate/geometric elements) is then divided into ten (10) segmented compartments, each depicting individual scenes and characters depicted amongst foliate grounds. These include various anthropomorphic deities (possibly Ganesh, Bhairava (with his vahana dog) and a Matsyakanya (mermaid)), dancing girls, historical religious figures, nobles, and sadu/brahmin/gurus – these may also reference ancient Sanskrit texts the Ramayana and Mahabharata. These are framed by two outer circles with repeating foliate and linear elements, which lead into the raised lip (having a pattern which references the classical architectural arch feature seen in many Indian temples and palaces). The outermost rim is nicely finished with an angled three-circle form that imitates a rope-knot twist (a sign of quality, as most other examples have this left undecorated).
Being cast-brass and not a machine-pressed (or turned) tray distinguishes this as being made before the introduction of modern production methods, with the casting showing the heavy weight and variability only seen in hand-made pieces.
In very good original condition. There is patination to the brass appropriate for this being a correct antique item and not modern reproduction.
Measures 29.1cm (diameter) x 1.5cm (d) approximately.

Antique/Vintage 20th Century Kashmiri repoussé copper kashkul bowl
$225

8 x Antique/Vintage 20th Century Tibetan/Bhutanese
gilt copper yongchap bowls
$795
Offered for sale is stunning collection of eight antique/vintage 20th Century Tibetan/Bhutanese yönchap (ཡོན་ཆབ་) repoussé copper, silver and gold gilt offering/water bowls. Common practice across Tibet and Bhutan, Yonchap is the daily Buddhist cultural practice of offering a series of bowls (usually seven, sometimes eight) containing water (the cleanest possible) and other items. Every bowl represents different elements of prayer - when used as a set of seven, two hold water and five have ‘utility’ objects (flowers, incense, butter candle, perfume, food). When used as a set of eight, the last has a representation of music.
The design of each features a low, dished hand-beaten cup form in copper with extensive decoration (repoussé work and gilding). The copper would appear to have been hand-cut from a flat sheet then beaten over a mould to form the cup. All have a series of four separate medallions which combine symbols of the Noble Eightfold Path, being the:
- Lotus (meaning transformation and acceptance)
- Conch Shell (the sound of Dharma being shared)
- Dharma wheel (the Buddha’s teachings, or Noble Eightfold Path)
- Endless/Eternal Knot (which has various interpretations, from the interrelation of everything to never-ending growth through the dharma)
- Umbrella (safety/protection/refuge by the teachings of the Buddha)
- Fish (freedom from suffering and delusion)
- Vase (symbolising the potential of enlightenment for growth and gifts of dharma practice)
- Victory banner (the victory of Buddhist teachings over ignorance, delusion, hatred and anger)
Having four medallions is another reference to the Buddha’s teaching; of not only nurturing love in our hearts, but spreading it everywhere: `in one direction, then a second, a third and a fourth, above, below, all around, everywhere, to others as to oneself. One should live pervading the great wide world with the mind filled with an abundant and exalted love that is freed from anger and ill-will'.
The cartouche are separated by stylised lotus flower foliage against a textured ground, the external rim having a repeated gallery of triangular shapes with a recurring angled ‘feather’ motif.
Every cup in this set is unique, all have slight differences in design and size. Over time and with use each bowl has developed its own patination, appropriate for these being correct antique/vintage items and not modern reproductions. Please note a previous owner has externally cleaned one.
Due to their variation, as a guide each measures around 3.5cm (h) x 8.4cm (diameter).
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. LARGE Vintage 20th Century African Mid-Century Modern style repoussé copper charger/wall hanging
$175
Offered for sale is large vintage 20th Century African Mid-Century Modern style repoussé copper wall hanging, most likely Zimbabwean in origin and estimated as dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. Despite extensive research, the identity of the artist could not be directly attributed however another (almost exact in style) example was found signed ‘H C Gakutemba’ – a photo of this is provided for comparison.
The bold and eye-catching design features a circular, dished form in patinated copper with extensive applied decoration. Of interest to note is the copper appears to have been originally hand-cut (as a flat circle) then beaten to create the raised pie-crust border (you can actually see the individual hammer strikes). Set on a plenished ground, three distinct tribal masks radiate across a quiver (with arrows), decorated shield and strung bow. There is a wonderful dynamism to the piece, the masks having individual personalities and great character. This would have taken a considerable amount of time for the artist to create.

Vintage 20th Century (1930) Amy Johnson pressed copper commemorative plaque
$345
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Art Deco-era pressed copper commemorative aeronautical plaque, most likely made in Australia and dating from 1930. After this incredible achievement, she undertook an extensive promotional/celebratory tour of Australia before returning to England and continued breaking various flight records around the globe during the 1930’s. Enlisting in the Air Transport Auxiliary during WW2, tragically Amy perished on 5 January 1941 when she could not be rescued from the Thames Estuary after parachuting from her plane in thick fog during extremely poor winter weather conditions.
