Beach/Seaside Items

Living on the world's largest island, I've come to appreciate the important role our love of beach

and ocean has had upon our historical and popular culture. Given the human tendency to exploit without thought for consequence I'm glad we now seek to protect, rather than harm our precious natural environment.

2 x Vintage 20th Century brass whale tale bookends

by SPI (USA)

$140

Offered for sale is this lovely pair of vintage 20th Century novelty ‘diving whale’ cast brass bookends, identified as being made by the USA firm San Pacific International (SPI) and estimated as dating from the 1990’s. Operating since 1973 in San Francisco, SPI have developed a reputation for creating a popular range of marine and nature-inspired garden and indoor sculpture (often hiring prominent artists as designers). Their output is often inspired by major artists/designers (in this instance the renowned oceanic artist Robert Wyland).

As much individual pieces of sculpture as practical items.

Using a realistic style, the handsome design of each features a two-part cast hollow brass form with applied patination fitted to a curved base. Set against a stylised base of curled waves, they show a raised whale fluke (about to either dive or perhaps tail-slap). They capture the dynamism, energy and power of these amazing animals. One fluke is set slightly higher than the other. Interestingly, the stylised waves show a Japanese influence – being similar to those appearing in Katsu Hokusai’s famous 19th Century ukiyo-e print ‘The great wave off Kanagawa’.

Perfect for any beach home table, mantlepiece or window sill - or lover of whales.

Each in very good overall original condition. There is patination appropriate with these being proper proper vintage items and not modern reproductions. Please note this includes some very light wear to the base and brass, which the asking price takes into account.

They individually measure (including base) 15cm (h) x 20cm (at longest) x 16cm (at widest) and 14cm (h) x 18cm (at longest) x 16cm (at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. As with any vintage watch I recommend allowing for a service. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: MR26006

Vintage 20th Century (1993) original Australian

Naive/Outsider Art of Geelong/Corio Bay/Eastern Beach

$165

Offered for sale is this large original vintage 20th Century Australian Naive/Outsider Art landscape oil painting, created by Juliet Tripodi and dating from 1993. Provenance shows this work being exhibited at the 1993 Target Art Exhibition (with Gallery Number 116) and titled, ‘Eastern Beach’. Research indicated this exhibition may have taken place at the Geelong Art Gallery. No further information on Juliet can be offered at this time.

Using a bright warm palate and Naive/Outsider Art/Modernist style, set against Jillong/Corio Bay Juliet has captured several icons of the Geelong region – notably the granite Wurdi Youang (or Ude Youang)/You Yang range, the Art Deco Eastern Beach esplanade and its swimming enclosure plus the (former) Shell refinery. There’s a wonderfully unfettered, childlike wonkiness to the work - creating a source of joy and delight for the viewer that makes it unique, contemporary and engaging.

For any Geelong resident (or those lucky enough to live along Eastern Beach) this would be a great original artwork for your home.

In excellent original condition. There may be occasional patination appropriate for this being a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction. The future owner may wish to carefully transfer the ‘116’ Gallery Number to the reverse.

Measures (framed) 57cm (h) x 67.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Vintage 20th Century Australian kitsch Shedwork Abalone

and Clam lamp

$125

Offered for sale is this fun kitsch vintage 20th Century Shedwork lamp, possibly made in Australia post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s.

The design features a multi-part construction made from three natural shells of differing sizes with a single light fitting. The base is most likely a white clam, mounted with a rear large abalone/paua shell and smaller hippopus hippopus at the front. The base of the abalone has been drilled to allow a light fitting (which turned on corrected) which casts a nice beam.

Perfect for any grotto, a practical as well as charming decorative piece for any home or business.

In very good overall original condition. There is light patination appropriate for this being a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction. Has not been inspected by an electrician, so highly-recommended this is done before any use.

ITEM: NO25011

LARGE original Australian beachscape oil painting by Richard Campbell

$195

Offered for sale is this large original 21st Century Australian oil painting (on canvas) by English/Australian painter Richard Campbell. Born in the UK before emigrating in the late-1960’s, Richard’s artistic career has two distinct periods: commencing in the 1970’s and through the 1980’s, then from the late-2000’s to 2020. His initial phase saw him produce a large body of work (via solo and group exhibitions) that was recognised by appearing in Graeme Norris’ 2nd and 3rd editions of ‘Australian Artists Today’. Eventually moving to the Mornington Peninsula area in the 1990’s, Richard’s secondary artistic phase saw him join the Peninsula Arts Society (offering tutoring to other members) and from 2008 recommence exhibiting at multiple art shows in the Melbourne area – where he won a series of Best in Show, People’s Choice, Commended and Highly-Commended awards. He appears to have ceased exhibiting around 2020 (submitting three works for the Mornington Art Show). Richard’s ouvre mostly expresses itself in large, Impressionist-influenced landscapes that often reference the beaches of the Seaford/Dromona and wider Mornington region. Signed ‘Richard Campbell’ and with a ‘10’ gallery/exhibition sticker on the frame reverse.

Using his signature Impressionist-style and warm tonal structure, the painting captures a dynamic seascape in the early-morning light (and the location whilst not specified is most likely a south-easterly view past Rye back-beach/Gunnamatta area towards Cape Schanck). With a choppy sea as background, a long wave is shown about to break across a rocky shore. Richard has smartly-observed the foam/spray, energy and pull of the ocean as it both surges towards and draws away from the rocks – providing a moment of tension and exhilaration in the natural world.

The asking price represents excellent value – a similar-sized work is currently available (via Gallery247) at $675.

Perfect for decorating your beachside home or business.

Measures (framed) 64cm (h) x 95cm (w) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Antique 19th Century English hand-coloured etching

'Port Philip Heads' by J S Prout

$135

Offered for sale is this charming original antique 19th Century English hand-coloured steel-engraved etching, originally created by John Skinner Prout and dating from around 1874 (published by Virtue & Company, London). Regarded as an important colonial artist, self-taught lithographer Prout emigrated with his family to Australia in 1840 before returning to England in 1848. During this eight year period he travelled from Sydney to Tasmania (plus visiting Victoria) and lectured as well as creating highly-regarded images for the Sydney and Tasmania Illustrated. His influence upon Tasmanian landscape art is particularly viewed as significant. Back in England post-1848, he continued to produce artistic content related to his time in Australia until his passing in 1876.

Based on various elements, the scene represent a composite historical image ranging from 1853 to 1862. In Prout’s trademark richly-detailed style, it depicts the risky task of passing through the highly-dangerous (especially during the 19th Century) ‘The Rip’ at the entrance to Port Philip Bay. Surrounded by a series of smaller vessels, central to the drama is a 3-masted sailing vessel with smaller twin-paddle steamer portside (which would be one of the earliest examples operating within the bay). Linking the two vessels there’s a definite influence of J M Turner’s 1838 painting ‘The Fighting Temeraire’ – with its romanticised view of the passing of the passing of the Era of Sail and into the Steam Age (which Prout would well have been aware of, being in London from 1838 to 1840 (when it was a new work by the famous Turner)).

Possibly one or two of the surrounding sail vessels are Pilot Ships: ‘Boomerang’, ‘Corsair’, ‘Anonyma’, ‘Proserpine’, ‘Rip’, ‘Mavis’ or ‘Hawk’. Prominent on the headland is the initial wooden 1853 Queenscliff lighthouse (which pre-dates construction of the famous bluestone Black and White lighthouses in 1862). Of extra interest is the slightly-humorous placement of two fishing boats in the foreground, with their crews enjoying the spectacle of both vessels ‘threading the eye of the needle’.

A great artwork for any lover of Australian maritime history – or if you’re within the surrounding Queenscliff/Sorrento area, this is a great artwork for any business or home.

In very good overall original condition. There is patination appropriate for this being a proper antique item and not modern reproduction.

Measures (framed) 34cm (h) x 39cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: SE25070

Vintage 20th Century original Australian oil painting of Sorrento Beach by Judy Wallwyk

$125

Offered for sale is this charming original vintage 20th Century landscape oil painting (on board), created by Australian artist Judy Anne Wallwyk (also known as Wallwyk-Kubeil) and most likely painted in the 1970’s to 1980’s. Based in Melbourne, Judy’s ouvre expressed itself in Impressionist-influenced landscapes (often with a focus on historical, romanticised subjects such as early colonial life). Her works are held in domestic private and public collections. Signed ‘J Wallwyk’ with her personal information label on the reverse and titled ‘Sorrento, Victoria’.

Using a warm tonal structure and her signature loose Impressionist style, Judy has attractively captured an engaging and dynamic north-westerly view across the beach at one of Victoria’s iconic seaside towns, Sorrento. The exact location is Sullivan Bay – looking towards the historically-important Western Sister headland. In 1802 this was the site of eighteen members from the Bunurong repulsing a landing by Lieutenant John Murray and his crew. Subsequently named Bowen’s Point, in 1803 the surrounding site became a convict prison - the first official colonial occupation outside of the Sydney Limits of Location. Abandoned after only a few months, it’s from this spot that the English convict William Buckley escaped (eventually living within the Kulin Federation of Tribes for over thirty years before his being found in 1835). Judy has included a series of figures enjoying a sunny day – walking and boating. A series of seabirds wheel overhead, nicely completing this active and bucolic image.

If you’re lucky enough to live in one of the exclusive homes in this area this original work would be a lovely addition to your décor.

In very good original condition. Over time the varnish has slightly yellowed (which a conservator could address if felt necessary).

Measures (framed) 39.5cm (h) x 52.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Published as a paperback during WW2 material rationing, its major work reflects upon the sinking of converted-passenger liner Jervis Bay (who as the sole escort of supply convoy HX84, managed to save 32 of 37 cargo ships from being sunk by the German battleship Admiral Sheer – before being sunk herself with three-quarters of crew lost). Of historical wartime interest is the BBC ‘Voice of London’ description on the inside rear dustjacket.

Antique 20th Century Turkish Ottoman Empire artwork

of Istanbul waterfront

$145

Offered for sale is this antique 20th Century original Turkish Ottoman Empire artwork on paper, most likely made in Istanbul and dating from 1900 to 1922. These are often called ‘miniatures’. Despite research the artist could not be identified (these are sometimes marked on the reverse, however this was not removed from the frame). Has previously been framed in the USA by Alpine Art (of Salt Lake City, Utah).

Utilising a combination of techniques (applied stencil with hand-finishing and further decoration) the attractive two-panel polychrome design provides a stylised historical waterside view of Istanbul. Set within a gold border on a cream ground the larger panel depicts two sailing-ships on the Bosphorus, contrasted against the fortified city walls. Within the walls are a series of secular and religious buildings – including the world famous Blue and Suleymaniye mosques and Hagia Sophia Cathedral. A randomised series of birds that sit underneath a historical (eg Australia is still shown as connected to Antarctica) representation of the Eastern and Western hemispheres, overwritten with script. A small ovoid stamp appears over the top of this.

The smaller vertical panel contains neatly-written Arabic script. Unfortunately I was unable to directly translate this (although using Google Translate appeared (and which could be inaccurate) to indicate this extols the virtues of motherhood and undertaking the hajj).

In very good overall condition. There is a small amount of patination, appropriate for both this being a correct antique item and not modern reproduction.

Measures (framed) 19.8cm (h) x 12cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century English Art Deco era Crown Devon Rouge Royale lustre trinket box

$95

Founded in 1870 by Simon Fielding, the company quickly expanded to become a large and successful manufacturer of both domestic and art pottery. The attractive design features a lidded, low rectangular box form with applied decoration (including lustre glazes, gilding and polychrome enamelled jewelling). The base has a clear internal lustre glaze, the exterior being a repeat of the lid with gilt highlights.

A charming decorative as well as practical piece for any home or business.

In excellent original condition. No cracks (rings brightly when tapped) or chipping. There is some craquelure and very light wear to the gilding, appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Using warm tones and in a confident, loose Impressionist hand the work smartly depicts a coastal scene including sweeping sandy bay, a prominent rock formation (which may hold the clue to its location), grassy dunes, hills with dotted houses and distant mountains.

Possible settings include: the Cornish/Devon coastline (given her time in England), within Australia (the Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula, Wilsons Promontory, southern NSW) or (less likely) Bodega Bay (California, USA).

In very good original condition. There is some light patination and one small loss (which could be conserved if felt necessary), appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction. The asking price takes this into account.

Measures (framed) 45.5cm (h) x 62.5cm (w) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Vintage 20th Century Japanese Art Deco-style reverse-painted serving tray converted to wall hanging

$35

Offered for sale is this fun vintage 20th Century Art Deco-style Japanese reverse-painted glass serving tray (converted to a wall hanging), estimated as dating from the late 1940’s to 1950’s. This is the sort of export item permitted to allow Japan to rebuild its economy post-WW2.

The design features a polychrome reverse-painted (in an Art Deco poster style) tray form held in a raised and pierced gallery mount. The image depicts an idolised ocean scene (obviously in the Pacific) - complete with sandy beach, coconut tree and outrigger sailboat skimming across vibrant blue water with a dramatic cloud formation on the skyline. You can almost hear the ukulele's playing!

At some point in its past a previous owner has converted this to a wall hanging – thus preserving the glass surface in its current excellent condition.

A charming decorator’s piece for your beach home, Tiki Lounge, seafood restaurant or Art Deco residence.
In very good original condition, the glass having almost no discernable scratches, chips or cracking. There is some patination to the upper portion (outer) of the plating (where it was been hung), appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

RARE Vintage 20th Century brass paperweight form of

luxury speedboat

$125

Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century cast brass paperweight, most likely dating from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Despite research the maker is currently unknown - and another example of this type could not be found for comparison.

Cast in heavy brass, the stylised design captures a luxury speedboat of the 1920’s to 1950’s. Often called ‘Mahogany boats’, this would be the sort of pleasurecraft seen on Sydney Harbour, Lake Como in Switzerland or Great Lakes of the USA. Living ‘la dolce vita’! To add a sense of dynamism and movement, the artist has cleverly set the speedboat making a banked turn.

In very good original condition. Over time the brass has developed a deep patination, as expected from an antique/vintage item and not modern reproduction.

RARE 18th Century (1773) English maritime etching

Captain Cook New Zealand

$395

Offered for sale is this rare antique 18th Century English copperplate engraved maritime chart, published in 1773 as part of John Hawkesworth’s, ‘An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere : and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour / drawn up from the journals which were kept by the several commanders, and from the papers of Joseph Banks, Esq. by John Hawkesworth, LL.D. ; in three volumes ; illustrated with cuts and a great variety of charts and maps relative to countries now first discovered or hitherto but imperfectly known. Volume 1 (1773)’ (Strachan & Cadell, London).

Measurements and observations for this chart were created from 22 October to 6 December 1769 (during Cook’s first voyage). Split into one main and two secondary panels, it details Tolaga Bay (below, right) - where water and firewood was taken, the Coromandel Peninsula (Mercury Bay and Firth of Thames) and Bay of Islands (above, right). Mercury Bay was so named as being where Cook and HMAS Endeavour’s astronomer (Charles Green) measured the Transit of that planet, before exploring the Firth (main panel, left) and then travelling north to the Bay of Islands.

In very good original condition (considering it is 251 years old). Shows correct folds from being a map removed from its volume. There is some foxing and one small loss (appears to be done by silver-fish) - both could be addressed by a paper conservator if felt necessary.

A previous owner has had this framed at some point during the 1980’s to early 1990’s.

Vintage 20th Century Australian Rheopaipo

wave/skimmer board

$95

Founded in 1991 (on the NSW Central Coast) by John Holmes, Rheopaipo went on to produce a range of highly-regarded, well-made and innovative body- and wave/skimmerboards (as well as sponsoring a series of successful professional riders) before the business closed in 2006. Sadly John passed away in February 2020 after a long illness.

The bright and eye-catching Pop Art style design features a repeating group of World War Two Curtis P-40 Warhawk fighters shown in various scales and angles. Antique 20th Century original watercolour by Frederick Elliot

of the Raupo

$195

Offered for sale is this charming antique early 20th Century original watercolour by the renowned English-Australian maritime artist Frederick James Elliott (1869-1949), estimated to date from 1916 to 1923. Born in Devon, as a young teen Elliott emigrated with his family to the (then) colony of Queensland in 1876. He eventually worked as a lithographer for the Government Printing Office. Moving to Sydney in the 1900’s Elliot travelled extensively along the East Coast; taking this opportunity to create preparatory sketches of sailing ships, steam vessels and harbourside infrastructure for use in later works. A popular and prolific artist, his works were publicly exhibited in NSW and Queensland with many now being held in private, public and corporate collections.

Built in Dundee (Scotland) in 1876 (coincidentally the same year Elliot migrated to Australia) by John Key & Sons (actually their first vessel) the three-masted iron barque ‘Raupo’ was originally registered as ‘Peru’ then ‘Louisa Craig’ (from 1907) before her final name-change in 1916. In 1923 she was sold as a coal hulk and ceased working under sail until finally towed and beached in 1937. From 1907 to 1923 she had sailed extensively as a cargo ship between New Zealand and Australia.

This unusually large work by Elliot depicts the Raupo in full sail, with a single-funnel steam vessel approaching. The work strongly references the famous painting by Joseph Turner, ‘The Fighting Temeraire’ – with its depiction of the modern Steam Age taking the Age of Sail into obsolescence. And with the patination that’s occurred over time, this watercolour has taken on a unique and charming ‘faded grandeur’ – adding another layer of visual interest and connection with the smoky skies/smutty light that characterise the works of Turner.

A wonderfully evocative original artwork, perfect for the maritime collector or any beachside home/business.

In good to fair original condition. Over time some foxing has occurred (and one very small loss) which a professional paper conservator could address if felt necessary. There is a small amount of fading. The price takes this overall condition into account.

Measures (framed) 73.5cm (h) x 53.5cm (d) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
