Sports Items
Despite my country perhaps being the most sports-obsessed nation on the planet, if it doesn't involve two wheels and two legs peddling like mad then it's just not my cuppa tea (vive La Tour!). However that doesn't stop recognising the enjoyment that others find in bat, ball, reel, racquet, board, car etc.

2 x Vintage 20th Century Australian
Springer/Zapper Slashing Stick surfboards
$1,200
Offered for sale is this collectable and desirable pair of vintage 20th Century Australian ‘Springer’ and ‘Zapper Slashing Stick’ Thruster surfboards. Shaped and glassed by Bill Rowley, popular surfshop and board-maker Springer operated from their Anglesea address (63 Ocean Road) from the late-1970’s to mid-1980’s (the board is estimated as dating from the 1980’s). Based on the Victorian surfcoast (at Fairhaven) Howard Hughes (known as ‘Hughesy’) built low numbers of boards from the 1970’s to 1990’s as well as being a champion lifesaver (this board is estimated as dating from the 1980’s).
Both have great retro graphics and heaps of unique character, from the days when surfing was a lifestyle and not the commercial global behemoth it’s now become. This includes wear to the deck and bottom as well as home-made repairs (which the pictures have done their best to capture). With restoration (restored Springer examples are selling from $1,600-$1,800 and Zappers $1,000-$1,200), could possibly be used again or with a sympathetic clean would look great as display pieces for the man/ladycave, garage, business, etc.
Both in used overall original condition. There is patination appropriate for these being correct vintage items and not modern reproductions.
The Springer measures 1.8m (l) and Zapper 1.84m (l) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. 8 x Vintage 20th Century Australian CAMS 1992 Dinner/Shell? coasters
$25
Offered for set of eight vintage 20th Century Australian rare commemorative and decorative metal coasters, some dating from 1992 and produced by Modern Promotions Pty Ltd (Melbourne).
Each coaster features a rounded square metal form, having brushed and polished finishes with an embossed design. Five have been produced for the 1992 Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) Victorian Motorsport Dinner (this peak body for Australian motorsport was in 2020 renamed as Motorsport Australia) and as such would have been produced in very limited numbers. Three have a realistic image of a scallop shell – considering these were curated from the same source (and have very similar material appearances) there’s the possibility of there being an (unproven) link to Shell Fuels sponsoring/involved with the same event.

Large Vintage 20th Century English copper brass and pewter chess set
$675
Offered for sale is this fantastic large vintage 20th Century brass, copper and pewter chess set, identified as English in origin and estimated as dating from the late-1970’s to 1980’s. Despite research the maker could not be identified, however this particular set appears to have been retailed through highly-regarded English retailers. The pieces showed no magnetic properties when tested.
The handsome design features classical Staunton Pattern chess pieces cast in brass and pewter and finished with green felt lining. The heavy board is a multi-part construction formed from individual pressed copper sections pinned with copper nails to a green, felt-lined wooden base. The playing surface is subtly decorated by the sixty-four squares (each having a contrasting finish) being individually hand-fitted and neatly held by a series of individual single, double and quintuple domed copper nails – consequently none of these are the same, reflecting its unique hand-made nature.
Both a wonderful decorator’s piece and great gift/self-treat for any chess lover.
In very good overall original condition. All pieces (including the board) have taken on deep patination and wear appropriate with being correct vintage items and not modern reproductions. Please note there is a small dent to the board and the pewter king has lost his crown finial (as photographed) which the asking price takes into account – and you could possibly have it restored if felt necessary.
The board measures 43cm x 43cm x 1.5cm (h) approximately. A sample of pieces: king 9.8cm (h), bishop 7.6cm (h), castle 5.6cm (h) and pawn 5.2cm (h) approximately.

This is both a curious and important sporting item from an almost forgotten part of Australian and international sporting history. The design is taken from a series of stamps produced by the Dutch Post Office in 1956. This item has a truly interesting history behind its production, as Dutch athletes were forbidden to participate at the Melbourne Olympics due to the 1956 invasion of Hungary by Russia (nothing seems to have changed there, they’re still doing the same thing today tragically). Some of the athletes were already in Melbourne (who were informed via telegram to leave immediately, and wear only civilian clothing) preparing to take part when the public announcement was made by the Dutch Olympic Committee and government. Spain and Switzerland also withdrew their teams from participation.
An extremely rare and interesting for sports, Olympic, Dutch or history collectors.
Measures 16.5cm (h) x 10.5cm (w) x 4.5cm diameter (bottle) approximately.

RARE Vintage 20th century (1947) press photo of
Whistling Wind horse/Scobie Beasley? jockey
$45
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original press photograph, most likely of American thoroughbred racehorse ‘Whistling Wind’ and Australian jockey Arthur ‘Scobie’ Beasley, dating from February 1947. Whistling Wind is registered as being born 1 January 1943 (a four-year old when this photo was taken) and reported as being shipped to England for the 1947 race season. Arthur is known to have traveled constantly from Australia to the UK to compete and given his success adds weight to the attribution (however further information may clarify this). The horse rug is marked ‘HDP’ so this may assist identification of the horse stud.
The picture appears taken on an English beach, however lack of landscape features makes this difficult to ascertain an exact location. It is stamped ‘Kemsley Newspapers Manchester’ – one of the Allied Newspapers consortium that operated from the 1924 to 1959.
An interesting and historical decorative item for home or business.
In very good condition.
Measures (framed) 31cm (h) x 38.5cm (w) approximately.
