ITEM: AP24004

Vintage 20th Century handcarved wooden Laughing Buddha/Budhai/Hotei statue

$65

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century carved hardwood sculpture of ‘the laughing/happy Buddha’ (also known as ‘Budai’ in China or ‘Hotei’ in Japan), made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1990’s. The maker and country of origin is unknown. Not to be confused with actual Buddha, the figure of Budai/Hotei is derived from an actual Chinese monk who lived around 1000AD. He become well-known for living an eccentric, wandering lifestyle that included a love of eating and drinking (often to excess) and possessing an outgoing, happy personality (as well as large belly). As Hotei, in Japan he is considered one of the seven ‘lucky gods’. His image and appearance are considered to bring wealth, abundance, positivity, happiness and good fortune.

This nicely-detailed design of this particular example provides a charming, seated representation of Budai/Hotei, with his classical associated symbols of good luck, health and prosperity – prominent belly, full drinking cup and large sack (full of fruits and treasures).

There is a hole underneath the base, making this a useful as well as decorative piece – eg you could use this next to a doorway to hold a spare key.

A positive, joyous item for home or business decoration and/or veneration.

In very good original condition. There is some patination that reflects this being a vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 14cm (h) x 12.5cm (w) x 14cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Vintage 20th Century Hawaiian 'Coco Joes' lava statue of

Pahu Puke

A famous maker of ‘Tiki Lounge’ ware, Coco Joes were based in Punaluu (Hawaii) and operated from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. Their popular range of ‘lava’ figures were made from a blend of powdered black volcanic rock and resin. This allowed for highly-detailed forms to be cast with a great level of detail. The original factory tag is present.

A fun decorative item for home or business use. Time for lu’au, Arthur Lymann LP’s and Mai Tais!!

ITEM: JA24012

Vintage 20th Century hand-carved wooden 'Three Wise Monkeys' statue

$25

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century hand-carved ‘Three Wise Monkeys’ hardwood statue, most likely South-East Asian in origin and probably dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s.

Each monkey has been individually shaped before being mounted onto a curved base. Originating from 15th Century Japanese folklore, they singly represent: Mizaru (covering his eyes, and who sees no evil), Kikazaru (covering his ears, who hears no evil) and lastly Iwazaru (covering his mouth, who speaks no evil). They have a nice level of detail and their own unique expressions.

Over time they’ve taken on a great patination (that’s been left alone and respected, as using a beeswax would darken the wood).

Once a popular and fun interior-design item in many homes, these have become scarce and would be great for anyone wanting to create a vintage/boho look.

The piece has an appropriate level of gentle wear you’d expect from a proper vintage piece and not a modern copy.

Measures 12cm (h) x 17cm (w) x 6cm (d) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

ITEM: JA24002

2 x Vintage 20th Century Mid-Century Modern style

bird statues

$45

Offered for sale is this attractive pair of vintage 20th Century bird statues. One is most likely from South-East Asia (made from buffalo horn and dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s); the other from Germany and carved from a hardwood (and from the 1950’s).

Both have a Mid-Century Modern, stylised and elegant look that with these contrasting designs and materials combine to make an interesting decorative pairing.

In very good condition overall. There is some patination that confirms these as being a proper vintage pieces and not modern reproductions.

The bird made from horn measures 33.5cm (h) x 9cm (d) x 3.5cm (w) approximately. The wooden statue measures 35.5cm (h) x 9.5cm (d) x 3.8cm (w) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: NO23028

LARGE Vintage 20th Century South-East Asian hardwood votive/icon wall-shelf statue

$275

Offered for sale is this unusual and impressive large vintage 20th Century hand-carved South-East Asian hardwood wall-mounted votive offering/icon shelf or statue, made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. Despite extensive research, another example of this style could not be found for reference or comparison. The clothing depicted may come from a range of countries, from Thailand (Khon dance costume) to Indonesia (Barong/Legong dance costume).

The design features a winged female spirit-being that takes up 3/4 of the overall piece; supporting the display shelf (fringed with a gallery of stylised leaves). This spirit-being is extensively decorated and wearing traditional clothing. Beneath them sits a much smaller male figure, depicted in side-on view and performing a dynamic kneeling (or running) pose – in contrast to the spirit-being this figure has little decoration (wearing a simple cap and cloth band) and therefore may represent a human rather than mythological figure.

You can see the wood has been hand-adzed and skilfully crafted to shape this from one solid piece (unlike modern machine-cut examples). Its form and scale would have required removing a large amount to create its oversize three-dimensional depth. This type of wastage is rare now, given availability of native hardwoods is highly restricted due to over-logging.

A powerful and eye-catching example of traditional sculpture and would make a statement in any home or business.

A heavy chain has been fitted by a previous owner to allow for hanging (and for its weight). Due to its use of the wood’s natural original curves, it sits slightly askew on a flat surface.

In very good original condition, there is one small loss to the lower left portion of the spirit-being’s skirt. Over time the timber has patinated, which has been respected and left as found.

Measures 45cm (h) x 25 (w) x 19cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand watch it may need a service, and is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).

HUGE Vintage 20th Century (1980) Aotearoa New Zealand handcarved Hei Tiki statue by Master Carver John T Rua

$800

Offered for sale is this stunning oversize vintage 20th Century Aotearoa (New Zealand) Māori hand-carved wooden hei tiki statue, created by Ngai Tuhoe Tohunga Whakairo (Master Carver) John T Rua and dating from 1980. John has an impressive whakapapa being the grandson of revered Māori Prophet Rua Kenana and as a literal ‘living treasure’ in Aotearoa is considered a master and cultural leader in his gift of whakairo artwork. Becoming deaf at a young age lead him to eventually study whakairo under the tutelage of fellow Tohunga Whakairo Hone Te Kauru Taiapa (of Ngāti Porou) and graduate with honours from the prestigious New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute in 1972 (where Hone had been appointed its first master carver in 1966). From here John continued to develop an impressive body of work carving thousands of individual pieces as well as working on many marae and other buildings of national significance. This unique artwork would have been carved when John was living in Otautahi (Christchuch) during his preparation to work on the Ngā Hau E Whā National Marae (where he also taught during its construction). The reverse is signed ‘J T Rua’ and underneath there is an incised ‘N34-392-1’. In 1992 his service to Aotearoa was recognised with the presentation of The Queens Medal. John’s work is held in private and public collections globally. Today he lives in the Bay of Plenty area, continuing to teach whakairo as well as sign-language throughout the region.

The design is a classical and powerful pre-European contact representation of a hei tiki. John has made this piece with great care and attention to detail (including the cord-hole on its temple). The eyes are inset with hand-cut paua shell.

To purchase a new, similar original (and not tacky tourist-ware) modern whakairo of this importance, size and quality would cost thousands. And rightly so.

This one-off piece of incredible artwork has the mana to grace any serious Māori whakairo collection, or perhaps as a competition trophy for Australian-based kapa haka groups. Tihei Māoriora!

Over the years the timber has developed a patination and wear that reflects its creation from a natural timber.

Measures 50.5cm (h) x 20cm (w) x 10cm (d) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Offered for sale is this patinated spelter statue of a horse and jockey. The age, country of manufacture and identity of the sculptor is unknown.

Using a high level of detail the artist has captured the energy, concentration and power of a racehorse in full gallop. The jockey (also well detailed) is shown risen off the saddle. You can feel the finish line is just about to be crossed in first place!

An impressive piece of decoration for any horse racing enthusiast to enjoy.

In excellent original condition.

ITEM: JL23024

Vintage 20th Century Australian Mid-Century Modern relief-carved sculpted panel by Enid Hodkinson

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian-made relief-carved wooden hanging panel, made in Melbourne and most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s. There is a label on the reverse that identifies the creator as Enid Hodkinson of Lower Templestowe. Despite research am unable to offer further information on Enid’s work at this time – although it is rare to see a piece of vintage wood-carving that can be attributed to a female artist.

In a Mid-Century Modern style, from a single piece of softwood Enid has expertly crafted a stylised image of a tall pitcher and stand of lillies. It would have taken many hours of careful work to render this smart, original work of art!

A charming decorative item for home or business. Would be a perfect compliment to any Boyd home or 1950-60’s apartment.

In excellent original condition.

Measures 85.5cm (h) x 31cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

$35

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century African Ashanti ebonised hardwood statue, made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1990’s.

A handmade piece, you can see where the artist has used a chisel to skilfully carve this stylised image of a female tribe member. This form is often associated with fertility.

The ebonising shows wear and patination appropriate for being a genuine vintage item and not modern reproduction. There is a small crack to the base (which could be glued if felt necessary).

ITEM: JA23015

Antique/Vintage 20th Century Congolese Mangbetu ebony bust with Edamburu hairstyle

$125

Offered for sale is this antique/vintage Century African hand-carved ebony bust, most likely from the Congo and estimated as dating from the 1900’s to 1945.

In a powerful Minimalist style the carver has rendered a strong, dignified image of a Mangbetu woman with traditional Edamburu/Tumburu hairstyle (the facial scarification depicted may further identify her as coming from the Uele District of today’s northern Congo). Popular during the 19th and early-20th Century as a symbol of status and health, Edamburu/Tumburu is still used today and referenced in popular culture (such as in Marvel’s ‘Wakanda’ nation).

Importantly, the carver has taken great care to represent the complicated and culturally significant design of this unique Central African hairstyle.

In very good overall condition. The piece has the design, patination, oxidation and hand-carved qualities of a genuine antique/vintage item and not modern reproduction.

As an antique/vintage piece created before 1945 this item is legally available for purchase and collection.

ITEM: OC22023

Vintage 20th Century African primitive Mid-Century Modern hardwood antelope statue

$80

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century African hard-carved statue in native hardwood (probably teak), most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1980’s and from Central/West Africa (potentially Kenya).

Wonderfully carved using a Mid-Century Modern Style to form a stylised female antelope, the design reflects both the skill of the carver and their obvious connection to the wildlife that surrounds and sustains them. Everything needed to represent the animal has been made with simplicity and powerful lines. Nothing unnecessary, no embellishment – just pure representation.

The accentuated, curved hind also recognises the power of fertility and its importance to both human and animal. And the yellow glass trade beads offer a unique ‘pop’ to its most-expressive, carved face.

The statue was carefully treated with a natural beeswax to respect, protect and highlight its patination. The hardwood has a delicious glow to it!

Measures 41cm (h) x 7.5cm (w) x 17cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Japanese glazed pottery Siamese Cat by KK Ceramics

$45

The design smartly captures the elegance of a Siamese Cat sitting at ease. With ears at alert and engaging deep blue eyes, you almost want to pat it (or feed it, cats like that)!

In excellent original condition, no chips, cracking or damage. There is a small amount of craquelure, however this is to be expected on glazed vintage items.

Vintage 20th Century Balinese carved polychrome painted mask of Cili/Dewi Sri

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Balinese hand-carved softwood and polychrome decorated wall mask of Cili (or Dewi Sri), worshipped on the island as the Hindu goddess of rice, fertility, prosperity and feminine energy. This mask most likely dates from the 'golden age' of Australian/Balinese tourism, the 1980's to 1990's.

A charming, colourful and unique decorative item for home or business.

Over the years it has taken on a wonderful level of patination. The original dust has been left for the next owner to decide if wanting to clean (I chose not to remove as part of respecting its history).

Measures 43cm (h) x 25cm (w) x 9cm (d) approximately.

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century carved hardwood casket, most likely from Central Africa and dating post-WW2.

The five-sided design features a deeply relief-carved stylised representations of iconic African wildlife – elephant, water buffalo, leopard, and both black and white rhino. The naive style of carving is powerful and engaging - a charming decorative as well as practical item.

The casket was carefully nourished with a natural beeswax to enhance and protect the hardwood. Has patina from use (confirming it as a vintage item) but no damage.

Vintage 20th Century hand-carved lizard Shedwork

$45

Offered for sale is this unusual vintage 20th Century hand-carved wooden lizard sculpture, most likely carved from pine and dating from the 1950-70’s. An one-off example of either Shed-work or perhaps a student piece. Am unable to attribute the maker.

The carver has created a lizard that is active and alert, correctly capturing the energy and sprung sinuosity of an animal about to move. There’s also great character in its face.

A fun and unique gift or treat for any Herpetologist!

3 x Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea Trobriand/Massim Islands hardwood statues

$275

Offered for sale is this collection of vintage Papua New Guinea/Trobriand/Massim Islands carved wooden items, all post-WW2 and most likely dating from the early-1950's to 1980’s.

All these unique works feature powerful imagery, with two having a special focus on female power and veneration.

Offered for sale is:

- An unusual statue form, depicting two female figures. Carved from a single piece of ebonised hardwood. The topmost figure is wearing a head-dress and earrings, with the carver using fine notchwork to define limbs and tattoo markings. This figure has a powerful face with great dignity. The supporting figure is uncommon in being double-faced and set at 90 degrees to the figure above, allowing for either to be viewed face-on but not both at the same time. A strong piece with a focus on female power and veneration. Measures 46cm (h) x 8.5cm (d) x 5cm (w) approximately.

- A Shamanic/totemic sculpture depicting two standing human figures, one supporting the other with both linked by a spirit-dog being. Carved from a single piece of ebonised hardwood. The supporting figure holds a decorated offering, while the smaller has the spirit-dog entering their consciousness (via the larger figure). Given the rounded quality of the carving and totemic symbolism, this is less of a tourist piece and would suggest being closer to WW2 in date. Of particular interest is the sculpting of the smaller figure with their head impossibly rotated 180 degrees (so that it matches the head of the spirit-dog). An elegant work and expertly crafted by hand, not machine-carved like modern pieces. Measures 41cm (h) x 5cm (w) x 3cm (d) (approximately).

- A female form, carved from a tropical hardwood. The linework of her skirt and around the base is particularly fine. Measures 34cm (h) x 5cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th/early-21st Century Australian redgum vase/sculpture by Robert Lowe

$65

Offered for sale is this attractive vintage turned Redgum vase, created by Australian woodturner Bob (Robert) Lowe (recorded as active from the 1990’s to early 2000’s). Originally a fencepost, what a fantastic example of highlighting the quality of Australian hardwoods and recycling to create something new, useful and decorative.

A really strong design piece and would compliment any home or business. The piece was gently cleaned and polished using a natural beeswax to highlight and protect the woodgrain.

Measures 22cm (h) x 17cm (w) x 10cm (d) approximately.
