RARE 20th Century Australian art silverplate fruit/bread bowl with gumnuts/waratah design
$95
Offered for sale is this rare antique/vintage 20th Century Australian art silverplate handled-bowl, made for Dunklings Jewellers by Phoenix Manufacturing Company (Melbourne) and dating from the 1920’s to 1930’s. Dunklings was founded in 1874 and would become one of Australia’s most prestigious and innovative fine jewellery, watch and quality domestic giftwear retailers, with a clientele that included the domestic and globally famous, elite and influential. Established in 1916 (at 181 Little Collins Street), the Phoenix Manufacturing Company was by the 1930’s reported as the largest maker of silverplate items in the Southern Hemisphere (having moved to large factory in Richmond). Fully hallmarked – plus at one point in its history it’s been valued enough to record in a household inventory (etched 1122 EN/TN 45).
The attractive design represents a fine early 20th Century example of the growing confidence in an “Australian identity’ expressed through incorporating our unique flora and fauna. At the top of the handle is a double-sided foliage arrangement of gumnuts and broad gumleaves. Around the base is a repeating band of Waratah blossom intertwined with gumnuts and gumleaves set on a textured ground.
A distinctive as well as useful example of Australian vernacular silverplate, that could easily be used for floral displays, holding fruit, dried arrangements, pot pourri or simply as a decorative highlight.
In overall very good condition, there is some patination to be expected of a correct antique/vintage item and a few small verdigris spots (as pictured).

RARE 19th Century original English 'Apples That Pay' lithograph
$125
Offered for sale is this rare antique late-19th Century English lithoprint, dating from 21 October 1899. Titled ‘Apples that pay’ this was originally published as a supplement in ‘The profitable farm and garden’ (WH & Collingridge, London). This subscription-only weekly magazine (targeted at the burgeoning Victorian amateur farmer/gardener) was only produced from 1899 to 1904 and in a run limited to 1,000 copies.
In a very high level of detail and colour reproduction the picture contains five English apple varieties obviously considered profitable in the late 1800’s. They are (in descending order):
- Cox’s Orange Pippin (first appeared in 1825, and globally still grown today as an important heritage variety)
- Ecklinville Seedling (an 18th Century Irish apple, now a rare heritage fruit)
- Yorkshire Beauty (18th Century origin, now a heritage fruit)

Vintage 20th Century Dutch Victoria Biscuit Company tin
$25
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Dutch pressed metal biscuit tin, made by the Victoria Biscuit Company (VBC) and most likely dating from the 1950’s. Founded in 1896 and based in Dordrecht from 1908, VBC very quickly became a highly successful manufacturer of both chocolates and biscuits, often sold in a wide range of decorative and novelty tins. The VBC name disappeared in 1975 when the company was taken over by a rival manufacturer. Some of the original paper label remains underneath.
The unusual and attractive hexagonal tin is embossed on all sides (and lid) with images that tell the story of 16-17th Century Dutch naval trading history. From the ‘discovery’ of the Far East, then planning, undertaking a successful journey and eventual return to port (that’s if they didn’t get shipwrecked, attacked by pirates, lured to their doom by mermaids (dugongs), mutiny, etc, etc, etc). Particularly fun to note is the drunken session (Panel 1) that seems to inspire the whole process (some classic dry Dutch sense of humour there), ‘hey, who’s heard of the Spice Islands – let’s go there!’.
Perfect for storing a variety of items (yes, including biscuits) or as a purely decorative kitchenalia item.
In very good condition. Over time the metal has lightly patinated, reflecting its use by previous owners and confirming it being a vintage item and not modern reproduction.
Measures (with lid fitted) 23cm x 23cm x 7.5cm (h) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Italian 'HMS Bounty' ice bucket/
6 x tumblers by CERVE
$45

A curious and fun bit of nautical-themed bar accoutrements – very unusual to have the 18th Century mutiny of an English warship memorialised by an Italian glass company! HMS Bounty was of course captained by the (in)famous Captain Bligh; who then became an early governor of colonial New South Wales before being again (ironically) deposed from office during the 1808 Rum Rebellion.
All glass pieces have a repeated ‘Bounty’ title-plate and image of the ship (from two different views) etched onto each side. The set includes a set of original plastic ice-tongs and six matching tumblers.

Antique 19th Century English Late-Regency/Early-Victorian cut-glass tea caddy cannister
$120
Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century Late-Regency/Early-Victorian cut glass tea caddy, most likely English in origin and estimated to date from 1825 to the 1850’s.
The design features a heavy, hand-blown body with eight vertical wheel-cut grooves that repeats on the original, mushroom-shaped fitted lid. Has great weight, and very tactile. This would have originally sat within a fitted tea caddy (either as a solo piece or one of a pair).
Perfect for either completing a period tea caddy or could be used to hold sweets, leaf tea, teabags etc.
The ground pontil base, lid and body shows wear appropriate with this being a genuine antique and not modern reproduction. Importantly, there are no large chips or losses to either piece.
Measures (with lid fitted) 14.5cm (h) x 16cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Antique late-19th/early-20th Century European? Art Nouveau silver sugar tongs
$55
Offered for sale are these antique late-19th/early-20th Century silver sugar tongs, most likely European in origin (and so a minimum 800 silver); estimated to date from the late-1890’s to 1910 and possibly German or Austro-Hungarian. Have looked extensively and no hallmark is present (may have been rubbed over time, and/or not every piece is always marked) but has the correct magnetic, thermal, sound, lustre and wear (from polishing) qualities of silver. The piece also responded to cleaning as silver would (using a correct cloth). Please do your own research before purchasing. Weighs 6 grams.
The design is a classical Art Nouveau/Vienna Secessionist style with a large stylised rose supported by intertwined branches that hold five large leaves. This then transforms into a three-branch organic form with loose, draping leaves that cup a smaller rose (in reverse direction to the larger).
A lovely and charming piece, whether for decorative or practical use.
Measures 10cm (l) x 3.5cm (at widest) approximately.

RARE 20th Century English WW2 WSC-production seahorse jug/pitcher by Wade?
$95
Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century English glazed art pottery pitcher/jug, possibly made by Wade and dating from 1941 to 1952. This piece was made under the WW2 Wartime Concentration Scheme (WCS) and as such is an extremely rare item (especially in Australia). During this period, production limits were imposed upon English manufacturers for items non-essential to the war effort (or immediate post-war recovery) so output of ‘art pottery’ was very limited. The attribution to Wade has been based on the similarity of this piece to their 1930’s Art Deco designs. Founded in 1867 (at Stoke-on-Trent), unfortunately the Wade factory went into administration in 2022 and has now ceased production. The backstamp has a large ‘A’ (which the WCS limited to only 30 factories (including Wade)).
Also of interest is the original Australian retailer’s sticker (Clive King). Starting in the 1930’s Clive King retailed hardware, building and construction items at 5-7 Atherton Road, Oakleigh and advertised locally as ‘The Hardware Man’. The business has been written about by author Helen Gobbi for the Oakleigh and District Historical Society. Still noted as trading in December 1956 they are noted as also operating a store at 367 Flinder Street, Melbourne (given the Oakleigh site always appeared advertised as a ‘timber yard’ it’s most likely this jug was retailed through their city store).
The fantastical and entertaining design (which reflects a strong Art Deco influence) features a stylised repeated image of a seahorse floating above large waves, with a seaweed spray located at the top of the handle and spout. Given the waves rising form, dripping water-spray and overall shape the designer was probably aware of (or deliberately referencing) the famous Japanese Ukiyo-E woodblock ‘Great wave off Kanagawa’ by Katsushika Hokusai.
With a limited production and fascinating social history, this item is a very desirable piece of art pottery!
Over time the soft green glaze has developed a very subtle craquelure. There are no chips or cracks, only one very small abbrasion (as pictured) that’s hard to spot but noted for a complete item description.
Measures 13cm (h) x 14.5cm (body diameter, at widest) x 19cm (long, including handle/spout) approximately.
