Vintage 20th Century Australian decorated kauri platter

by Eric Juckert

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian decorated kauri wood tray, made by artist Eric Juckert and estimated as dating from 1959 to 1965. A well-known and much-loved personality on Philip Island, Eric was already a highly-regarded potter and painter when he moved to the island in 1959 (at Grossard Point), establishing a studio gallery (and menagerie of domestic and exotic animals). From 1959 until 1965 (when electricity finally reached his property - allowing for an electric kiln to be installed) he took to painting wooden plaques and other tourist pieces.

Born in Richmond in 1918, Eric studied with important 20th Century potter Una Deerborn in the mid-1930’s before starting his own studio (selling to David Jones and Myer). Serving in the RAAF during WW2, post-service he moved within the Melbourne area several times before travelling overseas and returning to finally settle on the island. Eric was known to have supported other local creatives (including the Summerlands Art Group) throughout his own career. During his lifetime, the quality of his textures and glazes became recognised domestically and internationally. In 1988 he completed a much-appreciated mural celebrating 150 years of colonisation on the island (that still hangs in the Cowes Cultural Centre). Ceasing pottery production in 1992, he passed away in 2004. Eric’s pottery is held in the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and many private collections.

In 2018, a story from his colourful life at Grossard’s Point was celebrated with an online comic strip created by Melbourne cartoonist and filmaker Bernard Caleo.

The design features a low, turned bowl form with wooden and plated metal carry-handle. This has been hand-decorated with three stylised Aboriginal hunting implements and weapons: a boomerang (with stylised turtle, kangaroo, snake and faux-totemic elements), woomera and club (having faux-totemic ovoid elements applied).

In very good original condition. There is some soft patination, appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures (including handle) 10cm (h) x 32cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final

Vintage 20th Century Japanese hardwood carved wall hanging

$60

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Japanese hardwood decorative wall hanging, made post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. Despite extensive research, the craftsperson cannot currently be identified.

Initially created from a thin, rectangular hand-adzed piece of dark hardwood (possibly old cedar). One side has then been carved with a series of extended shallow channels to create a central ‘window’ - finely smoothed in contrast to the adzed texture above and below (deliberately creating the idea of rocks (symbolising mountains), often found in Japanese gardens). Four design elements have then been carved into this area: a fan shape (having an internal scene of a tea house/temple on a rock, surrounded by trees and a bridge), kanji script (which unfortunately I cannot translate), a stylised pine tree (connected with rebirth/renewal, good fortune and long life) and what appears a signature inside a square mon.

Overall this reflects Shinto ideas of nature workship, the importance of seasons and harmony with the environment. Of importance is noting that the artist has taken great care to exploit both the natural and worked shape that has emerged during initial preparation of the timber.

An elegant and charming interior design piece.

In excellent overall original condition. There is some patination appropriate for this being a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 30cm (h) x 9.5cm (w) x 1.5cm (d) approximately.

ITEM: DE24029

Vintage 20th Century hardwood statue Madonna and Child/Motherhood

$50

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original hardwood sculpture. Despite research the country of origin and maker are currently unknown. This well-carved and nicely-detailed figure provides two possible interpretations: either a classical representation of The Madonna and Child; or an equally powerful depiction of motherhood.

The design itself features an elongated, robed woman holding an infant within her closed arms. Mounted on an ovoid base, the craftsperson has taken great care to utilise the original, angled form of the timber for the main body (which from the side gives a ‘moving forward’ dynamic) and skill to impart a high level of detail. The robes drape with their natural weight, while at the same time emphasise the idea of movement. The human form is well-captured with subtlety and nuance, the woman’s face having particular attention to her hair (which flows around both sides of the hood) and expression that is warm, gentle and knowing.

A powerful and enjoyable original work or art - perfect for respectful veneration or as a purely decorative piece.

In very good original condition. There is some patination, as expected from a vintage item and not modern reproduction. The hardwood was gently nourished with a natural beeswax to protect and enhance the timber.

Measures 18.5cm (h) x 5.7x4.5cm (ovoid diameter, at widest) approximately.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: DE24008

Vintage 20th Century Shedwork novelty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle thermometer

$20

Offered for sale is this fun kitsch vintage 20th Century novelty wooden ‘shedwork’ thermometer, most likely made in Australia and estimated as dating from the 1980’s. Made by a ‘Mr Smith’.

The design features a handmade softwood (pine) and pokerwork image of an iconic ‘classical’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle set on a matching wooden base. It is unclear which Ninja Turtle this depicts.

Perfect decorative piece for any lover of pop culture, home, business, etc.

In very good overall original condition. Over time the pine has oxidised to its current colour, appropriate for this being a vintage item and not modern reproduction. The thermometer is broken (but you could replace if wanted).

Measures (including base) 24.6cm (h) x 14cm (w) x 3.8cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. ITEM: JL24019

Antique late-19th/early-20th Century German portable priests wooden altar cross

$175

Offered for sale is this rare antique late-19th/early-20th Century German portable priests wood and metal altar cross/crucifix, estimated as dating from the 1890’s to 1920’s.

The design features a classical cast-metal image of Christ upon the cross with accompanying symbols of His crucifixion, mounted on an ebonised wooden cross set in a curved plinth. Accompanying symbology includes plaques with: ‘INRI’, a corona above His head and Paschal lamb on the base. Including the image of Christ, these all have a high level of detail. There is a shaped socket to the crucifix that neatly fits into the plinth for easy deconstruction and installation to allow transportation.

Perfect for respectful veneration or as a decorator’s piece.

In very good original condition. There is some patination and dust that reflects this being an antique item and not modern reproduction. The Skull of Golgotha (below the feet of Christ) is not present however the original outline remains visible.

Measures (with crucifix fitted) 27cm (h) x 11.5cm (w) x 5.3cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: JL24018

2 x Vintage 20th Century Balinese hardwood Mid-Century Modern statues School of/Follower of Pita Maha Movement

$135

Offered for sale is this stunning pair of vintage 20th century Indonesian carved hardwood sculptures, made post-WW2 and most likely originating from the island of Bali. Estimated as dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s and influenced by the domestic Pita Maha school/movement.

Each design provides a highly-detailed and engaging three-dimensional portrait of a native woman with prominent hair and bare shoulders. Created in a dark wood, the first wears a sarong complimented by a floral pendant suspended on a rhombus-form chain. With flowing hair cascading across her right shoulder, this detail also takes her downward gaze in that direction. She has floral earrings and two foliate headpieces, held and framed by a traditional gelungan agung crown. The level of detail captured in the hair is amazing and wonderfully tactile.

The second (in which the carver has cleverly utilised natural variation of the hardwood’s colour) has her hair dramatically upswept with a continuing gentle curve along the top (almost like a peacock’s tail feathers) as well as falling between her shoulders. Set with flowers and gelungan agung headpiece, this hairstyle allows large floral earrings to smartly frame her face (which gazes down towards the left).

Wonderful Mid-Century Modern decorative pieces – if you have a Modigliani or Tretchikoff print hanging in your home, these would compliment perfectly.

In excellent original condition.

The first measures 25.5cm (h) x 12.7cm (w) x 6cm (d), the second 25cm (h) x 14.3cm (w) x 6cm (d) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. $45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century turned hardwood bowl (possibly redgum or blackwood), made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1990’s. Despite research the maker is unknown but probably Australian (some clues to their identity may be found in the unique finishing on the base).

The attractive and smart design consists of low, rising bowl form with broad rim and dished interior. The rim is finished with five raised bands, the original wood texture being left untouched on these as both a textural/visual highlight and reflection of the turner’s skill and understanding of the material. Vintage 20th Century paper mache and softwood novelty

cats parachuting in a basket

$60

Offered for sale is this cute vintage 20th Century paper mache and wood novelty decoration, made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1980’s to 1990’s. Despite research the country of origin and the maker is unknown (however a firm called Allan Agohob did offer a series of parachuting characters in the 1970’s).

The bright and charming design features a colourful group of four cats suspended beneath a parachute. Each has been hand-carved and individually painted, all have their own unique fixed expression!

Perfect for any cat lover - or a happy piece for a child’s bedroom.

In very good original condition. Was carefully cleaned before sale, however the dust at the bottom of the basket (built up over time) was left in place out of respect for that patination (as well as confirming its authentic nature as a vintage piece and not modern reproduction). Over time the paint has patinated (which was not fully removed/cleaned as this would have interfered with its unique, aged appearance). The cats are slightly loose on their mounts but not detached (you could always reglue them if felt necessary).

Measures (hanging) 30cm approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Vintage 20th Century hand-carved Three Wise Monkeys wooden statue

$25

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century hand-carved ‘Three Wise Monkeys’ hardwood statue, most likely South-East Asian in origin and probably dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s.

Each monkey has been individually shaped before being mounted onto a curved base. Originating from 15th Century Japanese folklore, they singly represent: Mizaru (covering his eyes, and who sees no evil), Kikazaru (covering his ears, who hears no evil) and lastly Iwazaru (covering his mouth, who speaks no evil). They have a nice level of detail and their own unique expressions.

Over time they’ve taken on a great patination (that’s been left alone and respected, as using a beeswax would darken the wood).

Once a popular and fun interior-design item in many homes, these have become scarce and would be great for anyone wanting to create a vintage/boho look.

The piece has an appropriate level of gentle wear you’d expect from a proper vintage piece and not a modern reproduction.

Measures 12cm (h) x 17cm (w) x 6cm (d) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century handcarved Laughing Buddha/Budhai/Hotei hardwood statue

$65

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century carved hardwood sculpture of ‘the laughing/happy Buddha’ (also known as ‘Budai’ in China or ‘Hotei’ in Japan), made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1990’s. The maker and country of origin is unknown. Not to be confused with actual Buddha, the figure of Budai/Hotei is derived from an actual Chinese monk who lived around 1000AD. He become well-known for living an eccentric, wandering lifestyle that included a love of eating and drinking (often to excess) and possessing an outgoing, happy personality (as well as large belly). As Hotei, in Japan he is considered one of the seven ‘lucky gods’. His image and appearance are considered to bring wealth, abundance, positivity, happiness and good fortune.

This nicely-detailed design of this particular example provides a charming, seated representation of Budai/Hotei, with his classical associated symbols of good luck, health and prosperity – prominent belly, full drinking cup and large sack (full of fruits and treasures).

There is a hole underneath the base, making this a useful as well as decorative piece – eg you could use this next to a doorway to hold a spare key.

A positive, joyous item for home or business decoration and/or veneration.

In very good original condition. There is some patination that reflects this being a vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 14cm (h) x 12.5cm (w) x 14cm (d) approximately.

Utilising a thick slab of hardwood the artist has created a stylised relief carving of the instantly-recognisable World Heritage Listed Parthenon Temple, found on the Acropolis of Athens. Perfect gift for any lover of ancient history or person of Greek descent.

LARGE Australian turned Coolibar wooden bowl

$175

Offered for sale is this stunning large Australian Coolibar tree turned bowl. Despite extensive research the highly-talented woodcarver and date of manufacture is currently unknown. Numbered 132, signed by the artist (their cartouche possibly saying 'JTPH' or other combination) and identified by them as coming from Central Australia.

The piece provides a wonderfully organic and sculptural decorative statement. The carver has taken care to utilise and accentuate the natural curves and wear that would have originally formed part of the natural timber.

An impressive as well as practical item, perfect as the centrepiece on any table or sideboard.

In excellent original condition. The timber was lightly nourished with a natural beeswax.

Measures 48cm x 38cm x 12cm (h) approximately.

Antique late-19th/early-20th Century olivewood

religious medallion from Jerusalem

$135

Offered for sale is this antique late-19th/early-20th Century carved Olivewood religious medallion, most likely dating from the 1890’s to 1920’s and would have been made in (what was then) part of the Ottoman Empire. Many of these were purchased as souvenirs by 1st AIF soldiers based in the Middle-East during WW1 and either sent home to relatives/loved ones, or brought back with their kit after demobilisation.

The design features a sliced medallion of Olivewood branch that has been hard-carved with a crucifix, pierced and bleeding heart of Jesus, the ladder placed against His crucifix and another item pertaining to the crucifixion. All these are set on a textured ground with surrounding notched border. In gothic lettering the words ‘Jerusalem’ are written on the reverse.

A charming piece for respectful veneration or decoration.

In excellent original condition – the wood was carefully cleaned and natural beeswax applied to protect and nourish the patination that had developed over 100 years.

Measures 11cm (h) x 10cm (w) x 2.5cm (d) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea (Trobriand Islands) hardwood bowl of unusual form

$75

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea (Trobriand Islands) carved hardwood bowl, created post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1980’s. Given the scarcity of native hardwoods due to over-logging, reasonably-sized examples such as this are getting harder and harder to find.

With a distinctive spike on its head, the unusual design is based on the anthropomorphic tribal expression of a Unicorn Fish. A very rare form, as wooden fish-bowls from the Trobriands are almost always based on the Grouper (my research actually found no other examples for comparison).

In excellent original condition.

Measures 34cm x 20cm x 3cm (deep) approximately.
