LARGE Vintage 20th Century Sout-East Asian hardwood votive/icon wall shelf statue

$275

Offered for sale is this unusual and impressive large vintage 20th Century hand-carved South-East Asian hardwood wall-mounted votive offering/icon shelf, most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. Despite extensive research, another example of this style could not be found for reference or comparison. The clothing depicted may come from a range of countries, from Thailand (Khon dance costume) to Indonesia (Barong/Legong dance costume).

The design features a winged female spirit-being that takes up 3/4 of the piece; supporting the display shelf (fringed with a gallery of stylised leaves). This spirit-being is extensively decorated and wearing traditional clothing. Beneath them sits a much smaller male figure, depicted in side-on view and performing a dynamic kneeling (or running) pose – in contrast to the central spirit-being this figure has little decoration (wearing a simple cap and cloth band) and may represent a human rather than mythological figure.

A powerful and eye-catching example of traditional sculpture and would make a statement in any home or business.

You can see the wood has been hand-adzed and skilfully crafted from one solid piece (unlike modern machine-cut examples). Its form and scale would have required removing a large amount to create its oversize three-dimensional depth. This type of wastage is rare now, given availability of native hardwoods is highly restricted due to over-logging.

A heavy chain has been fitted to allow for hanging (and allow for its weight). Due to its use of the wood’s natural original curves, it sits slightly askew on a flat surface.

In very good original condition, there is one small loss to the lower left portion of the spirit-being’s skirt. Over time the timber has patinated, which has been respected and left as found.

Measures 45cm (h) x 25 (w) x 19cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. $75

Vintage 20th Century Indian Sheesham hardwood

portable side table

$85

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Indian-made Sheesham-wood hardwood portable side (or coffee) table, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1980’s.

The hand-carved design features stylised classical Indian foliate patterns; the central boss inset with a floral emblem. Each leg features stamped and hand-worked patterning and is cut in the form of a peacock with its plumes showing.

Often called ‘Indian Rosewood’, apart from its natural deep red colour one of the great qualities of Sheesham wood is its durability by being resistant to termites.

A charming and useful decorative piece for any home or business – very boho chic.

Over the years the timber has developed patination and wear that reflects it being a vintage piece and not modern reproduction.

Measures 37cm x 37cm (square) x 38cm (high, with base fitted) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. HUGE Vintage 20th Century (1980) Aotearoa New Zealand hardcarved Hei Tiki statue by Master Carver John T Rua

$750

Offered for sale is this stunning oversize vintage 20th Century Aotearoa (New Zealand) Māori hand-carved wooden hei tiki statue, created by Ngai Tuhoe Tohunga Whakairo (Master Carver) John T Rua and dating from 1980. John has an impressive whakapapa being the grandson of revered Māori Prophet Rua Kenana and as a literal ‘living treasure’ in Aotearoa is considered a master and cultural leader in his gift of whakairo artwork. Becoming deaf at a young age lead him to eventually study whakairo under the tutelage of fellow Tohunga Whakairo Hone Te Kauru Taiapa (of Ngāti Porou) and graduate with honours from the prestigious New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute in 1972 (where Hone had been appointed its first master carver in 1966). From here John continued to develop an impressive body of work carving thousands of individual pieces as well as working on many marae and other buildings of national significance. This unique artwork would have been carved when John was living in Otautahi (Christchuch) during his preparation to work on the Ngā Hau E Whā National Marae (where he also taught during its construction). The reverse is signed ‘J T Rua’ and underneath there is an incised ‘N34-392-1’. In 1992 his service to Aotearoa was recognised with the presentation of The Queens Medal. John’s work is held in private and public collections globally. Today he lives in the Bay of Plenty area, continuing to teach whakairo as well as sign-language throughout the region.

The design is a classical and powerful pre-European contact representation of a hei tiki. John has made this piece with great care and attention to detail (including the cord-hole on its temple). The eyes are inset with hand-cut paua shell.

To purchase a new, similar original (and not tacky tourist-ware) modern whakairo of this importance, size and quality would cost thousands. And rightly so.

This one-off piece of incredible artwork has the mana to grace any serious Māori whakairo collection, or perhaps as a competition trophy for Australian-based kapa haka groups. Tihei Māoriora!

Over the years the timber has developed a patination and wear that reflects its creation from a natural timber.

Measures 50.5cm (h) x 20cm (w) x 10cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century Art Deco-style lidded wooden box

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century lidded box, most likely Australian (or possibly English) in origin and dating from the 1950’s. The maker is unknown, however the DALCO hinges and lock-plate stamped 'B&R 1. Lever' may offer some indication for further research.

UNIQUE Vintage 20th Century Australian? raffle barrel Shedwork

$125

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century wooden Raffle Barrel, most likely made in Australia and estimated to date from the 1930’s to 1960’s.

This wonderful example of Shed Work has resulted in an absolutely one-off, unique piece – you will not find another like it!

The barrel is cleverly constructed from what appears to be cedar or pine skirting board, with sides taken from reclaimed furniture and the frame made from various timber off-cuts (reinforced by pressed-metal bracing cut from old biscuit/oil tins). Both hasp locks are stamped ‘STRONG’ and lid-hinges designed in a Gothic Revival style. Whoever crafted this has taken great care to build a proper, working item. The sort of person who truly understood ‘made do and mend’ or perhaps lived through WW2 and/or the 1930’s Great Depression and didn’t like waste!

A quirky and fun item for home or business decoration. Also works perfectly well for its intended use as a raffle barrel.
In very good original condition, there is wear from use and age that reflects it being a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction. The entire barrel and frame were carefully nourished with a natural beeswax to enhance and protect the patination.

Measures 37cm (w) x 27.5cm (h) x 24.5cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Australian Mid-Century Modern relief-carved sculpted panel by Enid Hodkinson

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian-made relief-carved wooden hanging panel, made in Melbourne and most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s. There is a label on the reverse that identifies the creator as Enid Hodkinson of Lower Templestowe. Despite research am unable to offer further information on Enid’s work at this time – although it is rare to see a piece of vintage wood-carving that can be attributed to a female artist.

In a Mid-Century Modern style, from a single piece of softwood Enid has expertly crafted a stylised image of a tall pitcher and stand of lillies. It would have taken many hours of careful work to render this smart, original work of art!

A charming decorative item for home or business. Would be a perfect compliment to any Boyd home or 1950-60’s apartment.

In excellent original condition.

Measures 85.5cm (h) x 31cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. ITEM: AP23019

Vintage 20th Century Louis XV-style carved oak and leather footstool

$75

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century carved oak and leather footstool in ovoid form, most likely made from the 1930’s to 1950’s. The country of origin is unknown.

The design is inspired by 18th Century Louis XV examples, showcasing classical Icanthus leaf foliage and curved cabriole legs which terminate in ball-feet (all feature attractive scrollwork). Well-constructed and nicely carved.

In very good original condition, the leather has patinated which adds to its overall ‘French Provincal boho’ look (you could always replace this with a fancier/bespoke cloth if desired). The springing and webbing has retained excellent tension.

A charming and useful piece of attractive furniture.

Measures 45cm x 34cm x 25cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: AP23018

LARGE Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea (Massim/Trobriand Islands) hardwood bowl

$145

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea (Massim/Trobriand Islands) carved hardwood bowl, made post-WW2 and most likely dating from 1950’s to 1970’s.

Given the scarcity of native tropical hardwoods through over-logging, pieces of this size (and depth) are now extremely hard to find as materials are very limited. Before collectors recognise this rarity and prices jump (as they should for such interesting work) the time to buy good pieces such as this example is now!

The expressive and powerful hand-carved design represents a stylised fish (possibly a Grouper) detailed in the distinctive carving style endemic to the Massim/Trobriand Islands. The eye is an inset Cowrie shell. A great degree of skill and care has been taken to create this impressive bowl.

Both a unique decorative as well as useful piece.

Measures 44.5cm (l) x 31.5cm (w) x 6.5cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. RARE Vintage 20th Century Solomon Islands hardwood

slit drum

$175

Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century Solomon Islands carved hardwood and mother-of-pearl slit drum, most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s.

Very few examples in this intriguing form have come onto the open market (and are especially hard to find in this size, given the scarcity of native hardwoods).

The powerful design features a double-ended (and double-sided) abstract anthropomorphic representation of either a fish (possibly a dolphin) or (given a drum means communication) stylised human face with an open mouth. Both original strikers are present.

An unusual and highly-individual original piece of Melanesian artwork. Would look great in any Mid-Century Modern home.

In very good to excellent original condition. No chipping or losses.

of an Igorot Chief/Warrior

$125

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century carved wooden bust (possibly teak or mahogany), made in the Phillipines post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s.

The sculptor has skilfully carved this realistic image of a male chief/warrior from the Igorot tribe of northern Luzon. The level of detail is high and carries a great deal of human expression and dignity.

Perfect statement piece for home or business decoration.

Shows patination commensurate with its age as a genuine vintage item (with losses to the necklace, and a crack), as pictured. It was carefully nourished with a natural beeswax to enhance and protect the unique finish developed over many years.

Vintage 20th Century African Ashanti ebonised hardwood

Mid-Century Modern-style statue

$35

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century African Ashanti ebonised hardwood statue, made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1990’s.

A handmade piece, you can see where the artist has used a chisel to skilfully carve this stylised image of a female tribe member. This form is often associated with fertility.

The ebonising shows wear and patination appropriate for being a genuine vintage item and not modern reproduction. There is a small crack to the base (which could be glued if felt necessary).

Measures 26.5cm (h) x 9cm (w) x 3cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century Spanish Folk Art wooden carved medieval knight possibly by Bonachera & Andujar

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century hand-carved hardwood (oak?) statue, made in Spain and most likely dating from the late-1960's to early-1970's. Research indicated a potential maker as the firm Bonachera and Andujar.

Created in a Folk Art style, the design features a one-piece hand-carved form with polychrome enamel decoration. It depicts a knight with shield and holding a spear.

A fun and quirky collector’s piece for any castle or fortress.

ITEM: JA23015

Antique/Vintage 20th Century Congolese Mangbetu ebony bust with Edamburu hairstyle

$125

Offered for sale is this antique/vintage Century African hand-carved ebony bust, most likely from the Congo and estimated as dating from the 1900’s to 1930’s.

In a powerful Minimalist style the carver has rendered a strong, dignified image of a Mangbetu woman with traditional Edamburu/Tumburu hairstyle (the facial scarification depicted may further identify her as coming from the Uele District of today’s northern Congo). Popular during the 19th and early 20th Century as a symbol of status and health, Edamburu/Tumburu is still used today and referenced in popular culture (such as in Marvel’s ‘Wakanda’ nation).

Importantly, the carver has taken great care to represent the complicated and culturally significant design of this unique Central African hairstyle.

The piece has the design, patination, oxidation and hand-carved qualities of a genuine antique and not modern reproduction. Please feel free to do your own research before purchase.

Measures 14.5cm x 6cm x 8cm approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

RARE 3 x Antique/Vintage 20th Century Tiwi Island spears

$2,100

Offered for sale is this group of three extremely rare antique/vintage 20th Century Tiwi Island spears, estimated to date from 1901 to the 1970’s. Am currently unable to offer attribution as to which family group or individual craftsperson created them. Happy to have these authenticated by any prominent auction house or qualified Aboriginal artefact dealer before sale.

Rarely found on the open market and usually sold at auction, these are highly sought after and rightly command prices commesurate with their significance and scarcity.

One is a throwing spear, the others barbed. Some original painted decoration is still present, however has faded over time. In as-found condition, have not been cleaned or treated in any manner – that is up to the new owner to decide.

There are small losses, however this reflects their age as genuine antique/vintage items and not modern examples or fakes.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

ITEM: OC22005

Vintage 20th Century African primitive Mid-Century Modern antelope hardwood statue

$80

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century African hard-carved statue in native hardwood (probably teak), most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1980’s and from Central/West Africa (potentially Kenya).

Wonderfully carved using a Mid-Century Modern Style to form a stylised female antelope, the design reflects both the skill of the carver and their obvious connection to the wildlife that surrounds and sustains them. Everything needed to represent the animal has been made with simplicity and powerful lines. Nothing unnecessary, no embellishment – just pure representation.

The accentuated, curved hind also recognises the power of fertility and its importance to both human and animal. And the yellow glass trade beads offer a unique ‘pop’ to its most-expressive, carved face.

The statue was carefully treated with a natural beeswax to respect, protect and highlight its patination. The hardwood has a delicious glow to it!

Measures 41cm (h) x 7.5cm (w) x 17cm (d) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. $55

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Spanish-made handled wooden carrier, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s.

In a ‘Spanish Mission’ style, this is a fun and quirky bit of interior design! At some point in the past it’s been painted matt black and dry-brushed with gold paint. All very boho chic and lifts it from the heavy brown staining it would have originally had. The fun thing is that in different light it can look more cream/sand than gold, and sometimes the matt black seems a dominant colour - a bit like THAT dress.

A useful as well as decorative item - sturdily constructed and can hold a variety of items (as pictured, but not included – eg wine bottles, magazines, records, etc).

Measures 56cm (h) x 50cm (w) x 23cm (d).

The unusual design features a dolphin with a seriously angry look ... ‘What’s that Flipper? We’ve stuffed up the oceans, put you in entertainment parks and took all the fish?'. Well I’d be *(^*$#^ angry too!!’.

A quirky and useful (as well as decorative) styling item for any the home or business. You could also carefully add a loop to convert it into a wall plaque. Personally I’d like to see this end up on board the Sea Shepherd.

Cili/Dewi Sri

Antique/Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea (Trobriand/Massim Islands) Lime/Betel Nut mortar and pestle

$175

The hand-carved design features classical Trobriand boxed line-work inset with white lime. There are two uncommon features; the pestle has an unusual pair of notched twin wings (or sails) and mortar two elongated stylised ancestors at the base.

A powerful and dynamic original work of art.

Vintage 20th Century carved wooden keyring holder of

horse riding theme

$30

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea (Trobriand Islands) carved hardwood bowl, created post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1980’s. Given the scarcity of native hardwoods due to over-logging, reasonably-sized examples such as this are getting harder and harder to find.

With a distinctive spike on its head, the unusual design is based on the anthropomorphic tribal expression of a Unicorn Fish. A very rare form, as wooden fish-bowls from the Trobriands are almost always based on the Grouper (my research actually found no other examples for comparison).

In excellent original condition.

Measures 34cm x 20cm x 3cm (deep) approximately.
