Vintage 20th Century Fijian hand-carved hardwood
ceremonial oil dish
$75
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Fijian sedreniwaiwai hand-carved hardwood ceremonial oil bowl, estimated as dating from the late-1960's to 1970's. Also called a 'priests bowl', its original purpose would be to hold sacred coconut oil used for ceremonial purposes.
The design references antique examples of the 18th to 19th Centuries, stylistically formed into the shape of a canoe oar with banding, tavatava notch-edging and cross-hatching on the bowl, handle and both separate side-galleries.
A great decorative as well as useful item.
In very good original condition. There is genuine age - you can clearly see this has been created without modern power tools (eg uneven chizel and adze marks are evident, no saw cuts). The natural patination and deep colour of the timber is in as-found condition and has been left untouched.
Measures 34cm (l) x 15cm (w) x 3.5cm (d) approximately.

3 x Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea Trobriand/Massim Island hardwood statues
$275
Offered for sale is this collection of vintage Papua New Guinea/Trobriand/Massim Islands carved wooden items, all post-WW2 and most likely dating from the early-1950's to 1980’s.
Offered for sale is:
- An unusual statue form, depicting two female figures. Carved from a single piece of ebonised hardwood. The topmost figure is wearing a head-dress and earrings, with the carver using fine notchwork to define limbs and tattoo markings. This figure has a powerful face with great dignity. The supporting figure is uncommon in being double-faced and set at 90 degrees to the figure above, allowing for either to be viewed face-on but not both at the same time. A strong piece with a focus on female power and veneration. Measures 46cm (h) x 8.5cm (d) x 5cm (w) approximately.
- A Shamanic/totemic sculpture depicting two standing human figures, one supporting the other with both linked by a spirit-dog being. Carved from a single piece of ebonised hardwood. The supporting figure holds a decorated offering, while the smaller has the spirit-dog entering their consciousness (via the larger figure). Given the rounded quality of the carving and totemic symbolism, this is less of a tourist piece and would suggest being closer to WW2 in date. Of particular interest is the sculpting of the smaller figure with their head impossibly rotated 180 degrees (so that it matches the head of the spirit-dog). An elegant work and expertly crafted by hand, not machine-carved like modern pieces. Measures 41cm (h) x 5cm (w) x 3cm (d) (approximately).
- A female form, carved from a tropical hardwood. The linework of her skirt and around the base is particularly fine. Measures 34cm (h) x 5cm (diameter) approximately.
All these unique works feature powerful imagery, with two having a special focus on female power and veneration.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

LARGE Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinean Trobriand/Massim Islands hardwood serving bowl of unusual form
$225
Offered for sale is this stunning large vintage Papua New Guinea/Trobriand/Massim Islands carved wooden serving tray, post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1950's to 1980’s. Shaped from a single piece of hardwood, this bowl references classical elements of high quality carving from the Trobriand/Massim Islands.
The carver has skilfully crafted a highly-stylised, anthropomorphic form of a four-finned elongated fish with headprow in the shape of a spirit/totemic sea creature grasping another fish. A powerful and unique piece of tribal art.
With its strong design and generous size would suit any home for display or use. Imagine this on your large dining table!
The hardwood has developed a lovely warm patina and is in excellent original condition.
Measures 60cm (l) x 20cm (w) x 6cm (h) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Fijian hardwood decorative cannibal fork
$60
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century decorative example of a Fijian cannibal/flesh fork. Would date from post-WW2.
Called ‘ai cula ni bokola’ (or ‘bulutoko’) these were considered sacred and taboo tribal items, only used to feed chiefs. Genuine pieces are rarely found on the open market and fetch many thousands of dollars (usually ending up in museums or private collections). This well-made and handcrafted replica is an affordable alternative.
Formed from a single piece of hardwood which has been ebonised and decorated in notch-work. Dyed reed fibres have been added to the grip and as a wrist-strap. The terminal features a rounded and notched pommel (like found on Fijian war clubs).
Measures 41cm (l) x 5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea Sepik River
hand-carved hardwood mask
$95
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century hand-carved Papua New Guinea hand-carved hardwood mask, most likely from the Sepik River (coastal) area and created post-WW2.
Using three dimensions the artist has skilfully depicted a human face in elongated form surrounded by an intricately detailed ceremonial headress. The headress is particulary noteworthy, especially the delicacy of the lower portion and border notchwork. The facial features are similarly delicate and superbly detailed. The back has also been hollowed by chisel.
In very good original condition. There is patination appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction. Has never been drilled for hanging (which in itself is interesting).
Measures 28cm (h) x 13cm (w) x 6.5cm (d) approximately.

LARGE vintage 20th Century Japanese hand-carved wooden Buddha
$400
Offered for sale is this substantial and elegant carved wooden Buddha. Personally imported from Japan, where it was sold as a vintage 20th century item. Estimating from the patina and style of carving, this would most likely date post-WW2.
Has some lovely patina and great presence, the Buddha’s face being especially restful. With its large size it sits well in a hallway and have often decorated it with silk scarves (not included) as these make for an interesting contrast depending on colours and design mood.
Both a stunning venerative and decorative item. Suitable for home or business such as health spa, restaurant, etc.

Antique late-19th/early-20th Century Japanese Meiji era carved ranma transom
$195
Presented for sale is this lovely antique late-19th/early-20th Japanese carved and inlaid ranma transom. Attributed to the Meiji period (1868 to 1912), most likely towards the later end of this important creative period in Japanese design history.
The well-made panel depicts a sparrow flying over a landscape of bamboo and chrysantemum flowers. The sparrow and one chrysantemum are finely carved in bone, with the other flower head and five bamboo leaves carved in mother-of-pearl shell. The exquisite detailing seen on the sparrow is a delight.
The panel was gently dusted and carefully treated with Howards premium beeswax/carnauba/orange oil.
In very good overall original, as-found condition. There is patination appropriate with this being a proper antique item and not modern reproduction. Please note this includes a few small loses to the scrolling but nothing major. A small amount of gold lacquer will need stabilisation and there has been a tiny amount of loss (as pictured). This could all be addressed by a competent restorer. The asking price takes all this into account.
