RARE Melbourne 1956 Olympics Dutch Team souvenir

glass vase/candle

$45

Offered for sale is this extremely rare 20th Century Australian 1956 Melbourne Olympics souvenir bottle/combined candlestick, made in England.

This is both a curious and important sporting item from an almost forgotten part of Australian and international sporting history. The design is taken from a series of stamps produced by the Dutch Post Office in 1956. This item has a truly interesting history behind its production, as Dutch athletes were forbidden to participate at the Melbourne Olympics due to the 1956 invasion of Hungary by Russia (nothing seems to have changed there, they’re still doing the same thing today tragically). Some of the athletes were already in Melbourne (who were informed via telegram to leave immediately, and wear only civilian clothing) preparing to take part when the public announcement was made by the Dutch Olympic Committee and government. Spain and Switzerland also withdrew their teams from participation.

An extremely rare and interesting for sports, Olympic, Dutch or history collectors.

Measures 16.5cm (h) x 10.5cm (w) x 4.5cm diameter (bottle) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final

RARE Antique early-20th Century English chemists/photography measure made for JW Small

$65

Offered for sale is this rare antique early 20th Century chemists measure, made in England for Australian retailer J W Small and most likely dating from 1900 to 1914. J W Small were an early Australian importer and retailer of cameras and photographic accessories, starting operation in the 19th Century (during the 1860’s). In 1910, they are recorded as operating from 270 Little Collins Street, Melbourne. And in 1911 it was reported that the firm had been in business for almost 50 years and was moving from its original location to new, larger premises in Pitt Street, Sydney.

The hand-blown design features etched details for J W Small (‘operating in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide’), with both fluid ounces and drachms. This would have been used for dispensing developing fluids.

An interesting piece for any camera, apothecary/pharmaceutical, scientific, measures, Australiana or advertising collector.

In excellent original condition – no chips or fritting.

Measures 11cm (h) x 5cm (diameter) approximately.

ITEM: JN23035

Vintage 20th Century Mid-Century Modern/Scandinavian-inspired amber glass lidded bowl in style of Tamara Aladin

$65

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century amber glass lidded bowl. The country of manufacture is unknown but most likely dates from the 1960’s to 1970’s, with the maker taking influences from designers such as the Finnish Tamara Aladin and retailer Riihimäen Lasi.

In heavy amber glass, the Mid-Century Modern/Scandi-inspired design features a broad, rounded body with reassuringly chunky, solid base with a slight taper. The fitted lid duplicates the form of the body (just in a slightly smaller sizing) and sits perfectly.

A stylish and nicely proportioned piece of art glass. Would be an attractive decorative highlight for any home or business – as well as practical (could easily hold candy/sweets, biscuits, etc).

In very good overall condition, there is one very tiny frit to the inside of the lid (as pictured) – hard to spot when fitted but wanted to note for a full item description. The asking price takes overall condition into account.

Measures (with lid fitted) 18.5cm (h) x 15.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

ITEM: JN23032

Decorative clear-glass bubble paperweight

$30

It has a good in-hand weight at .6kg.

In excellent original condition - no cracks, kisses or chipping.

Measures 7.5cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Australian Art Deco era

Great Ocean Road pictoral ashtray

$25

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian-made souvenir glass ashtray, most likely dating from the 1930’s. Despite research the maker is unknown.

The design features a printed black-and-white photograph titled ‘The Great Ocean Road at Mt. Defiance’ (which is located halfway between Lorne and Wye River). Taken looking north-east, this particular image appears to have been referenced in the ‘Historical Drivers Guide to the Great Ocean Road’ (2007) by Ross J Bastiaan and dated to 1930.

In excellent original condition – no cracks, fritting to the glass body or losses to the photograph.

Measures 14cm x 9cm x 2.5cm (approx.).

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. ITEM: JN23015

Antique 19th Century English late-Regency/early-Victorian

cut-glass tea caddy/cannister

$95

Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century late-Regency/early-Victorian cut glass tea caddy, most likely English in origin and estimated to date from 1825 to the 1850’s.

The design features a heavy, hand-blown body with eight vertical wheel-cut grooves that repeats on the original, mushroom-shaped fitted lid. Has great weight, and very tactile. This would have originally sat within a fitted tea caddy (either as a solo piece or one of a pair).

Perfect for either completing a period tea caddy or could be used to hold sweets, leaf tea, teabags etc.

The ground pontil base, lid and body shows wear appropriate with this being a genuine antique and not modern reproduction. Importantly, there are no large chips or losses to either piece.

Measures (with lid fitted) 14.5cm (h) x 16cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: MY23001

Decorative Art Glass vase with unusual acid-etched/

textured finish

$55

Offered for sale is this decorative Art Glass vase. Unfortunately despite extensive research am unable to offer further information on the maker or country of origin at this time.

The design features a tall multi-layered, bulbous body (starting with a core of deep purple/black glass, then white, clear and a final black glass overlay). The outer layer has then been subject to an acid (or other glass-blowing treatment) to create a randomly-textured ‘spatter pattern’ finish that offers multiple ways of viewing/enjoying this unique piece.

A ground pontil base indicates this has been hand-blown, not moulded.

Measures 28.5cm (h) x 16cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century Japanese 'Hineri' art/studio glass handkerchief bowl by Iwatsu Glass

$195

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Japanese studio/art ‘handkerchief’ glass bowl, most likely made by Iwatsu Glass (Osaka) from their ‘Hineri’ range and dating from the 1970’s. The high quality of pieces from this factory mean they are often mistaken for Murano.

Created in amber and clear glass. On a heavy base five upswept pulls have been executed to form an organic, open shape. Tongs have then been used to add a slight frill to the overall design.

A smart and satisfying piece of one-off studio/art glass.

No cracks or chips. The ground pontil base shows an appropriate amount of wear for this being a vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures (at highest) 18cm x 17.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

ITEM: MR23033

Vintage 20th Century 'Le Cyclone' bicycle spaghetti jar

$25

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century printed glass spaghetti jar, most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1980’s. The maker is unknown. ‘Le Cyclone’ bicycles were manufactured by Milders Brothers in Paris (a rare surviving example exists in the Sterba Bicycle Collection, Czech Republic).

Based on an original 1893 French lithograph poster, the stylised designed features a wonderfully moustachioed and tweed-caped cyclist holding a ‘Cyclone’ chainless single-speed safety bicycle. This may possibly be the first known representation of a hipster.

Great decorative item for any bicycle shop (holding spokes, etc), bike collector, man/ladycave, garage or hipster hangout.

In very good original condition.

Measures 30cm (h) x 10cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: MR23008

Vintage 20th Century Czechoslovakian Art Deco moulded glass biscuit barrel by Libochovice Glassworks

$70

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Czechoslovakian Art Deco pressed glass footed biscuit barrel, produced by the Libochovice Glassworks and (established by Josef Feigl and Ladislav Morávek in 1912) and estimated as dating from the 1930’s.

A masterpiece of Art Deco styling with a bold, angular repeating pattern that could have come straight from the 1925 International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.

Originally would have had a matching glass lid however as there are no abrasion/marks to the lip, this would seem to indicate it either came unfitted or was separated very soon after its purchase.

Could be used for a variety of purposes today: as a vase, to hold sweets/candy or perhaps a tealight. Would also make a stunning centrepiece for any mantle, dining or hall table.

In overall very good original condition. Two feet have very small frits/kisses (as pictured) that are hard to notice but have been recorded for a full item description.

Measures 16cm (h) x 12cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century English 'Cleo' lead crystal candlestick

by Wedgwood/Dartington

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century English Wedgwood/Dartington lead crystal ‘Cleo’ candlestick, dating from 1982 to 1986 and designed by Frank Thrower. Founded in 1967, Dartington Glass continues operation today (Torrington, North Devon). Etched ‘Wedgwood’ on the base and with its original label attached.

A rare find in Australia (also given the association with Wedgwood only lasted four years), this hand-blown piece reflects the strong influence Scandinavian glass design had on Frank throughout his career at Dartington (being Head Designer from 1967 to 1987), and the overall output of the factory.

In high-quality, smoke lead crystal the form begins with a broad, flat base before rising into a thick stem. At around two-thirds of the stem height it gently flutes outwards before terminating in a flared sconce/nozzle.

Would easily fit into any home or business décor. A great example of English Mid-Century Modern glassware, inspired by Scandinavia!

No cracks, chips or damage.

Measures 14cm (h) x 7.3cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Italian Venetian cobalt blue decanter

with silver gilt

$55

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Italian cobalt blue glass decanter with silver gilding, made in Venice and most likely dating from the 1940’s to 1960’s.

In a stunning deep cobalt, the bulbous form has been hand-decorated with a scrolling foliate pattern. Importantly, the original fitted stopper is present and fits correctly (as these are often separated over time).

A charming decorative item for home or business.

No chipping or losses to the glass. There is some patination and wear to the gilding, and one very small abrasion (as pictured) which the price takes into account.

Measures (with stopper) 22.5cm (h) x 9cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. UNIQUE Vintage 21st Century (2002) Australian art glass goblet by Don Wreford

$275

Offered for sale is this stunning vintage 21st Century handmade goblet by Australian art glass pioneer Don Wreford, signed and dating from 2002. Arguably one of Australia’s most eminent glass craftsmen (who sadly passed in 2020), Don’s unique works are highly desirable and found in national and global collections (both private and institutional). It’s fair to say Don lived the sort of adventurous life that people simply don’t (or can’t) any more! Originally from England, he studied at the experimental and progressive Hornsea College of Art (London) in the 1960’s before travelling widely around the globe to expand his knowledge of different ethnic cultures. Don also established London’s first vegetarian restaurant, ‘Manna’ in 1967 (still operating today!). Initially self-taught glass-making during the early 1970’s before arriving in Australia, he later trained under Richard Morell, Stanislav Mellis and Julio Santas at The Jam Factory, Adelaide. After living and creating in Gisborne and Malmsbury, Daylesford would became the eventual site of his permanent studio and home in 1993. In 2004 one of Don’s pieces was sent as a gift for the wedding of Princess Mary of Denmark.

This exciting work can be divided into two distinct, joined parts which form the whole. The first is the hand-spun bowl of light purple, rolled over with a (most likely) gold oxide. The resulting striation to the gold is a wonderful outcome, catching the light and its myriad patterns can be appreciated from multiple angles.

The second part is the incredible base and stem. A bold, sculptural form. It consists of a series of (what appear to be) chunky, stacked and twisted ‘bricks’ supporting a square cube before terminating into a broad, lightly textured base. The ‘bricks’ have been formed with a hot-trail of glass wrapped over an inner core. Within the stem are flutings of orange and white dusted with gold and green metallic flakes. The combination of cubed form and sculpture conjures reference to Whitefriars’ ‘Drunken Bricklayer’ or the Brutalist output of Troika Pottery (which Don would have been well aware of). It feels great in the hand, very solid.

That Don has chosen to sign this work reveals the joyous acceptance of form and outcome that doesn’t express perfection but reveals the intuitive soul of a true artist. The ‘wonk angle’ to the stem is a demonstration of this intent, pure creation!

A highly unusual example (I cannot find another example of a goblet form for reference).

No cracks or chipping. There is a very small abrasion (as pictured) which may have occurred during the creation process or caused by a previous owner.

Measures 19.5cm (h) x 8.5cm (diameter, at base) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).

Vintage 20th Century art glass bowl

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century handmade art glass bowl, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1990’s. Unfortunately the maker and country of origin is unknown.

In stunning Cherry Red glass with clear rim, the craftsperson has skilfully formed a wonderfully decorative (as well as practical) unique piece – you can see the swirls of cooled molten glass formed whilst being spun out. Trapped air bubbles also reflect this is a genuine handmade and not moulded piece.

No cracks or chipping. The ground pontil base shows an appropriate level of wear mark expected from a vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 22.5cm (diameter) x 7.5cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Antique 19th Century English 'Newcastle Bell' pillar mould decanter with wabi sabi stopper

$85

Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century English hand-blown pillar mould ‘Newcastle Bell’ lead glass decanter, most likely dating from the 1850’s. Amazing to think this was created when the Australian Gold Rush was at its height!

What stands this piece out from other examples is it demonstrates an excellent example of Japanese ‘Wabi Sabi’ repair practice, as at some point in its early history the initial stopper has become damaged. Given it would have been very expensive to replace, rather than throw the decanter away its owner had a replacement top riveted to the original stopper base (which fits and nips up well, so is not a ‘marriage’ pairing). The riveting work has involved three pins and a custom metal collar being formed. A fascinating, unique example of a long-forgotten tradesperson’s skill - the result is deeply interesting from an aesthetic and social history perspective.

The body of the decanter itself has no cracks, chips or damage – amazing at being over 170 years old.

Measures 29cm (high, with stopper) x 13cm (diameter, at base) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. A fun decorators piece for any home or business.

Antique/Vintage 20th Century Japanese 'Good name is better than riches' moulded plate

$25

Offered for sale is this Vintage 20th Century Japanese moulded clear glass plate, most likely dating from the 1920’s to 1930’s. Marked ‘Made in Japan’ and ‘Registered design No. 2971’.

The well-executed design, with its motto ‘A good name is better than riches’ is (somewhat curiously) modelled on similar English examples of decorative/commemorative wear (usually in amber glass) of the late 19th Century. The motto is a variation of 'A good name is better than great wealth' (Proverbs 22:1).

In excellent overall original condition. No chips, fritting or cracking.

Measures 11cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century USA Disneyland printed and gilt

fluted bowl

$25

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century American-made printed and gilt fluted glass Disneyland souvenir plate, most likely dating from the 1960-70’s. There are two recorded styles of this souvenir plate, this being the earlier version.

The design features Sleeping Beauty’s castle in a central boss, with six of the ‘fantasy lands’ depicted around this. My favourite is: ‘America-descends-into-idealogue-extremist-chaos-and-anarchy-land’ (funny because it’s true folks).

In great original condition. No cracks, chipping or damage.

Measures 18cm (diam.) x 3.5cm (h) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Italian Murano sommerso bowl

attributed to Alfredo Barindi

$285

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Italian Murano sommerso glass bowl/ashtray, attributed to Alfredo Barbini and most likely dating from the late-1940’s to early-1950’s (when working for Seguso Vetri d'Arte). Descended from a famous Venetian glass-making family, Barbini is rightly considered one of the masters of 20th Century Murano artistry.

This eye-catching, bold piece features his signature use of biomorphic shapes formed with heavy, multi-coloured glass (often with a clear colour on the outermost ‘skin’) - this example consists of red, white (lattimo) and clear amber (another example of this style was made with purple as the innermost colour).

Mid-Century Modern design at its most attractive.

The ground pontil base demonstrates the appropriate level of wear you’d expect from a proper vintage piece and not a modern copy. No cracks or chipping. There is an air bubble present (as pictured) in the bowl however this has occurred when the piece was blown, reflecting its hand-crafted origin.

Measures 17.5cm x 15cm x 7cm (h) approximately.

Both a useful and decorative item for any home or business. You could also convert it into a wall mirror (imagine how good that would look).

Its patina reflects the history and use by generations of previous owners. The original green velvet backing remains in place.

Vintage 20th Century English Whitefriars Art Glass ruby spiral vase by Barnaby Powell

$80

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century hand-made English Whitefriars Art Glass vase in ruby, designed by Barnaby Powell in 1932 and and dating from 1940 to 1966 (when this colour was available).

The craftsperson has skilfully formed a continuous line of angled glass that smartly curves from the base to the top of the vase. The base reveals marks that only proper vintage glass (and not a modern reproduction) develops over many years of use by previous owners.

No fritting, chips or cracks. There is one small scratch, hard to see (especially when viewing as whole) but noted for a complete description and that the asking price takes into account.
