Vintage 20th Century Australian art glass decanter

by Julio Santos

$145

Offered for sale is this tall vintage 20th Century Australian art glass decanter, created by Master Glass artist Portugese-Australian Julio Santos (1933 to 2019) and estimated as dating from the early 1980’s. Born in Marinha Grande, Julio commenced his long association with glass as a twelve-year old apprentice at the (now closed) Nacional Fábrica de Vidros. In his early thirties he became Master Glass blower at Dorsteenhutte Glass Works (Germany), where he stayed for five years before migrating to Australia in 1967. He then continued to extend his practice as both a working glass artist and tutor (in Newcastle and Melbourne). Julio’s skill and creative output was recognised by his native Portugal awarding him the Most Internationally Recognised Master Glass Blower (1998) and an honorary Masters Degree in 2005 (from Crisform, College of Glass Masters, Marinha Grande). During an extensive career and prolific output, Julio became a respected and widely-collected maker of both utilitarian and art glass with pieces held in private, corporate and public collections. Signed 'J Santos' on the base.

The handsome design features a two-piece decanter of balluster form, hand-blown from clear glass. Both the stopper and main body are filled with a multitude of trapped bubbles of various sizes and shapes, creating a wonderfully dynamic piece that though static appears to pulse with movement.

A satisfying and enjoyable original work of art glass.

In very good overall original condition.

Measures (with stopper fitted) 35cm (h) x 15cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century Swedish Orrefors Mid-Century Modern 'leaf pattern' vase by Edward Hald

$175

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Swedish Mid-Century Modern ‘Leaf Pattern’ crystal vase, designed by Edward Hald for Orrefors and estimated as dating from the late-1940’s to 1956. Founded in 1898, Orrefors has since become a globally-recognised producer of elegant, timeless and high-quality art and domestic glassware – a byword for Scandanivian style and modernity. Considered one of the most influential Swedish glass designers of the 20th Century, Edward Hald formed one of the key creative pioneers at Orrefors. Initially enrolled as an architecture student, he took up painting in Paris (studying with Henri Matisse). Eventually returning to Sweden in 1917, Edward gained employment at Orrefors – where he was work for over 50 years. His obvious talent showed by assisting development of the ‘Graal Glass’ technique of encasing multiple blown layers into one piece. Working alongside Simon Gate saw Edward incorporate the Art Deco movement into Orrefor’s range, shown to great acclaim at the famous 1925 Paris Exposition. His works reflect Modernism in their simplicity of form and function. Although this design appears in the 1956 Orrefors catalogue, other pieces of the leaf pattern are attributed from 1941-onwards. Engraved on the base, ‘Orrefors HA 2526/10’.

The handsome design features a finely-crafted globular vase form, made from heavy crystal with flat base/top and applied decoration. Eight highly-stylised leafy branches (bearing either fruits or berries) reach vertically towards the flattened mouth (but interestingly don’t reach it), creating a wonderful sense of the energy and dynamism of nature. This vase shows wonderful balance of negative space, with just enough to allow for interpretation and catch the eye. The attention to detail and quality of the craftsperson is evident with the skill reflected in its construction.

Mid-Century minimalism at its best.

In very good original condition, no cracks or chipping. There is an area with three very small abrasions (hard to photograph but noted for a full description) that the asking price takes into account. This patina (and on the base) is appropriate for being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 14.5cm (h) x 14.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. LARGE Vintage 20th Century Australian art glass vase

by Jim McMurtrie

$125

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century Australian art glass vase, created by James McMurtrie and dating from 1996. James’ extensive career began studying alongside the talented Ararat ceramicist John Eagle, where initial work with clay lead him to discover a deep passion for working glass. Skilfully crafted from clear and red glass, the design features a tall form with bulbous base and broad, open mouth. With the stretch, swirl and pull of the metal the red has taken on an engaging quality that transitions from opaque to solid (the colour and colour reminds me of tomato soup slooshing around). Towards the upper neck there’s a secondary shoulder that provides an interesting visual intersection as well as tactile quality. Forever frozen in the lip, the red swirls like ocean waves before finishing in clear glass.

A satisfying and unique example of Australian art glass.

Vintage 20th Century Japanese Art Deco-style reverse-painted glass serving tray

$35

Offered for sale is this fun vintage 20th Century Art Deco-style Japanese reverse-painted glass serving tray (converted to a wall hanging), estimated as dating from the late 1940’s to 1950’s. This is the sort of export item permitted to allow Japan to rebuild its economy post-WW2.

The design features a polychrome reverse-painted (in an Art Deco poster style) tray form held in a raised and pierced gallery mount. The image depicts an idolised ocean scene (obviously in the Pacific) - complete with sandy beach, coconut tree and outrigger sailboat skimming across vibrant blue water with a dramatic cloud formation on the skyline. You can almost hear the ukulele's playing!

At some point in its past a previous owner has converted this to a wall hanging – thus preserving the glass surface in its current excellent condition.

A charming decorator’s piece for your beach home, Tiki Lounge, seafood restaurant or Art Deco residence.

Vintage 20th Century hand-blown glass bird paperweight/sculpture

$30

Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th Century hand-blown glass paperweight/sculpture, made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1980’s. Despite extensive research, the maker could not be identifed but could possibly be Northern/Central European or Japanese in origin.

The hand-made design features a stylised bird in pale blue glass. The wonderfully tactile and cleverly-shaped bulbous body clearly shows where the craftsperson has use their tongs to pull the beak and tail into shape (so this has clearly not been moulded). The introduction of a controlled internal air bubble adds extra visual interest and demonstrates the maker’s skill. They would appear inspired by Scandinavian designers such as Lindshammar of Sweden and Wedgwood’s ‘Lilliput’ range.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping. There is some light patination and wear to the ground pontil base, appropriate for this being a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction. There is dust present in the beak and tail (an indication of age) that has not been cleaned but left for the next owner to decide if they’d want to remove this.

Measures 8cm (h) x 12.5cm (l) x 5.3cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. RARE Antique 19th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty

carved glass perfume/snuff bottle of frog form

$245

Offered for sale is this rare antique 19th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty carved glass perfume/scent/snuff bottle. In Chinese culture, frogs are associated with the moon as well as prosperity and affluence (in the form of Ch’an Chu, the three-legged money frog), protection, good health/long life as well as ignorance (the ‘frog down the well’ fable). Only one other could be found for comparison!

The highly-skilled, well-made design features a red and clear glass ovoid body, cleverly hand-carved as a stylised frog with open mouth. With its wide-eyes, the expression is rather cute! Particular attention to detail includes includes having the legs positioned underneath the body, with toe webbing (styling not seen on the other example) – unnecessary as it would normally sit on this element and be unseen. The original stopper (would have been in silver with a cabochon stone terminal) is not present.

Considering its age and the fragility of material, in good overall condition. There are no losses, but a series of cracks are evident (as pictured). As there is no chipping or ‘kises’, it is unclear how these may have occurred. The asking price balances between rarity, desirability and all these factors combined.

Measures 2.5cm (h) x 6.7cm (l) x 3.2cm (at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. $145

Over this has then been applied two horizontal strands, themselves subsequently overlaid with an alternating angled lattice to form an attractive triangular gallery. The ‘scavo’ technique has created a most wonderful ancient look and tactile feel.

In overall good original condition. A previous owner would appear to have caused a kiss near the pontil, which has unfortunately removed a small portion of the inner base (as pictured). Importantly this is not visible when placed on a horizontal surface, however the price has been adjusted accordingly to reflect. There are no other external cracks or chipping.

Measures 12cm (h) x 7cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Original art glass studio bowl by Glenistair Hancock with original box and paperwork

$60

Offered for sale is this original studio art glass bowl by Australian artist Glenistair Hancock, estimated as dating from the early 2010’s. Born in Melbourne in 1969 to an artistic family, Glenistair originally studied sculpture and painting at RMIT before completing a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in glass) at Monash University in 1994. He was awarded the Thomas Foundation Professional Scholarship in 2001, allowing study at the famous Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle and other glass studios in the USA. Now based in the Victorian town of Warnambool, for a time he operated the (now closed) Saltmarsh Artful Living studio. Signed ‘Glenistair’ on the base. Comes with original information brochures and box.

The attractive design features a compact bowl form in predominantly soft orange, white and clear glass. With its swirls stretched in an almost ‘feather’ pattern, this is a dynamic and handsome piece.

Being hand-made means this work is unique, no other of Glenistair's will be exactly the same.

Vintage 20th Century BLENKO/BLENKO-style art glass

cobalt amphora vase

$85

Offered for sale is handsome vintage 20th art glass vase, made post-WW2 and most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1990’s. Research indicates the maker is possibly BLENKO (from the USA) or a factory stylistically-influenced by them.

The bold and attractive design features a large, amphora-style body in deep cobalt glass with two individually-applied handles of clear glass. It has been hand-blown and not moulded. Air bubbles are present, another indication of this being hand-crafted (it also features a ground-pontil base). Another layer of visual interest is by the body incorporating several vertical ‘pulls’ that add contrast.

In very good original overall condition. There are two small frits on the base, hard to spot but noted for a full item description (the price takes this into account). The base has appropriate wear for this being a vintage item and not modern reproduction.

LARGE Vintage 20th/21st Century Australian art glass

footed bowl by Tricia Allen

$95

Offered for sale is this 20th Century Australian art/studio glass bowl, created by Tricia Allen and estimated as dating from the 1990’s to early 2000’s.
One of Australia’s most highly-regarded glass artisans, Tricia completed a Bachelor of Arts (Monash University) in 1983 before undertaking further opportunity to expand her technique and development alongside Mike Hook, Nick Mount, Dante Marioni and Tony Hanning. With husband Norm Borg (who also doubled as her assistant) she eventually returned to the Lakes Entrance region and opened an initial studio in the 1990’s. Further commercial success and major recognition would see the commissioning of an architect-designed, purpose-built glass studio (that became a major tourist destination).

Becoming a master of the challenging medium that is glass, Tricia created works sensitive to its limitations whilst firmly knowing what she wanted to achieve. This evolving ouvre and natural skill would consistently see exploration of colour and patterns that were bold and highly-functional. One of her signatures was the use of a fragmentary, confetti-like flurry of multiple colours. Tricia exhibited multiple times, one (highly-satirical) piece being a finalist in the 2007 Ranamok Prize for Contemporary Glass. Sadly she lost a battle with motor-neurone disease in 2010. Tricia’s work and significant creative contribution to both the domestic and global art glass movement was acknowledged by a large retrospective exhibition (titled ‘Colour’) at the East Gippsland Art Gallery in August 2017. Her pieces are held in private, corporate collections and public galleries worldwide. Impressed with ‘T.A.G.’ (for ‘Tricia Allen Glass’) maker’s mark.

The design features a broad, dished bowl form with flat rim and squat conical base. The predominant colour for the bowl is a light mauve with the middle two-thirds having Tricia’s signature ‘confetti’ flurry (in varying purple and green tones) suggesting dynamism and movement. The base is clear glass.

In very good original condition. There are a small amount of scratches/marks but no cracks or chipping (as photographed), which the asking price takes into account.

Measures 10.5cm (h) x 31cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Antique 19th/20th Century United States Glass Company

'Alabama Beaded Bullseye and Drape' glass basket

$45

Offered for sale is this antique late-19th/early-20th Century USA moulded glass basket, made by the United States Glass Company and dating from 1899 to the 1920’s. Founded in 1891 (from a merger of several glass manufacturing firms) the company offered a wide range of popular domestic glassware and crystal. Eventually reducing its operational sites until solely based in Tiffin (Ohio), it continued production until 1962.

A rare find in the Australian market. Commonly called ‘Alabama Beaded Bullseye and Drape’ the Neo-Classical Revival design features a rectangular form with round-castellated rim, created by a repeated series of stylised ‘drapes’ hanging from a central circular boss surrounded by smaller beading. The base has a textured starburst pattern that assists with stability as well as providing another decorative element.

A lovely decorators piece, or could hold a variety of items from food (bread, cakes, biscuits, etc) to jewellery and trinkets.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chips.

Measures 23.3cm (l) x 15.3cm (w) x 6cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century Czechoslovakian 'Illusion' vase

in the style of Miloš Filip

$75

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Czechoslovakian moulded glass vase, in the style of designer Miloš Filip and most likely made by the Heřmanova Glassworks (or ‘Hut’) during the 1950’s. Born in 1926, Miloš was part of the generation of post-WW2 Eastern Block designers who often worked with geometric shapes, forms and lines that would come to be considered part of Mid-Century Modern’s ‘Brutalist’ style. His natural talents were quickly recognised and in 1955 was appointed as a designer to the Institute for Interior Culture (UBOK), with these early works made by the renowned Inwald Glassworks. Considered a great innovator, he reversed the common form of vases at the time - keeping a smooth interior and utilising an outwardly textured exterior. Sadly he passed away at the age of 40 (in 1966). Miloš’ skill has now appreciated and been recognised, with his still-contemporary-today pieces today now highly collectable.

The eye-catching design features a three-part moulded, oversize-beaker vase form with a series of repeated abstract and elongated ovoid-and-star lozenges. This appears heavily-inspired by Miloš’ ‘optical illusion’ vases (especially design no. 19866), which utilise a simple rounded-square shape. This example is also slightly rarer, being in a pale blue/purple glass (most contemporary examples are clear, rose or solid blue).

A stunning decorator’s piece for any home or business.

In excellent overall original condition, no chips or cracking. There is one extremely small abrasion, hard to notice (or photograph) but noted for a full item description. The base shows appropriate wear (being moved over surfaces for many years) as expected from a vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 20.5cm (h) x 13cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Antique/Vintage 20th Century Australian? Depression Glass moulded fruit/compote/tazza bowl

$35

Offered for sale is this antique/vintage 20th Century Depression Glass moulded compote/fruit bowl, possibly made in Australia by Crown Crystal (Sydney) and most likely dating from the late-1920’s to 1930’s.

The handsome and attractive Neo-Classical Revival design features a finely-gadrooned bowl and base, with a chunky knop waist and support. The rim has a rolling edge. The knop, support, upper and lower edge of the bowl and base are finished with a repeated gallery of stylised square starbusts.

Would make a stunning centrepiece for any table or sideboard. Could be returned to use for holding foodstuffs (fruit, pastries, lollies, etc) or floating flowers/tealights or enjoyed purely for its decorative value.

In excellent original condition, no chips or cracks. Features air bubbles and moulding flaws, expected from a correct Depression Glass piece (as they were often hastily produced) and not a modern reproduction.

Measures 18cm (h) x 20cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee.
