Antique 19th Century English Staffordshire Imari pattern

cup/saucer

$25

Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century Imari pattern gilt porcelain cup and saucer, most likely from Staffordshire and estimated as dating from 1870 to 1899. Despite research on the decorator’s marks (and possible factory backstamp on the saucer) the factory is unknown at this point.

Handsomely decorated in the manner of Royal Derby, Davenport and Minton, the design is inspired by Japanese export pottery of the 16th-19th Centuries.

In good original condition. There is some light wear to the gilding. No chips, however the cup has a firing crack that is reflected in the asking price.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Antique/Vintage 20th Century Japanese Kutani 'Karako'

cup and saucer by Tashiro Shoten

$55

Offered for sale is this antique early-20th Century Japanese Kutani ‘Karako’ eggshell porcelain cup and saucer, made by the firm of Tashiro Shoten and estimated as dating from the late-Meiji to Taisho/early-Showa Periods (1900’s to 1937). Originally established in Nagoya by Tashiro Ichiroji in 1878, the company eventually relocated to Yokohama. The saucer is factory signed.

Produced for the domestic (rather than export) market, the charming design features a finely-detailed expression of classical Karako (literal meaning ‘Tang children’) imagery in polychrome colours and gold gilding. With nine children depicted at play in total, this reflects the quality of the porcelain as well as a cultural expression of wishing a healthy, large family for the owners. There is a lovely translucence to both pieces.

In very good original condition, no chipping. There is some patination to the gilding, appropriate for this being a proper antique/vintage item and not modern reproduction. The saucer has a fine firing crack (as pictured) that the asking price takes into account.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Decorative studio art pottery vase

$50

Offered for sale is this large decorative studio art pottery vase. Despite extensive research, further information on the artist ‘N Sharkey’ can’t be provided at this time.

The fun and tactile design features a band of offset, individual incised panels decorated with polychrome and metallic glazes on a hand-formed cream earthenware body on a gloss black ground. A series of six ‘angular’ panels range from a fully-combed texture (with gold/bronze and black glaze) to a pointed set of ‘teeth’ (in metallic orange and bronze). Contrasting this are four panels with what may be three stylised, bisected Japanese Edo Period ‘ryo’ coins on a black ground surrounded by three impressed circles. The interior repeats the external black gloss glaze and rim is finished with a gold/bronze metallic band.

A bold and attractive original piece of art pottery.

In excellent original condition. No chipping or losses.

Measures 22cm (h) x 16.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Located in Abbuzzo and perched high in the Apennines mountains and world-famous for its ceramics, Castelli is home to various factories and artisans creating a range of decorated studio and domestic wares. Originally retailed by a seller (NINi) in Bisenti (a nearby village).

Painted in polychrome colours, the charming design features a romanticised rural Italian riparian and agricultural landscape with ancient stone water-mill in the foreground.

ITEM: JL24008

Vintage 20th Century Canadian/USA Pacific North-West

studio art pottery vase

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Pacific North-West smoke-fired art/studio pottery vase, most likely from Canada (British Colombia) or the USA (Washington state or Oregon) and estimated as dating from the 1970’s to 1980’s. Despite extensive research the artist (‘Lynda’) cannot be identified at this time, however given the symbolism found in the work it’s possible they are of First Nations ancestry.

The design features a large bulbous body with unusual neck – having a series of three projecting rings and curved inner surface. The main body has been incised with two inwardly-facing stylised moose, then smoke-fired and deliberately polished - leaving the neck unglazed/undecorated in the natural clay finish. The ‘primitive brut’ energy shown in the depiction of both animals has a great degree of respectful energy and power, reducing their bodies to a series of confident lines. It is in some way reminiscent of the famous ancient Lascaux cave paintings in France.

A strong decorator’s piece and unique piece of art pottery. Possibly the only example of this artist available on the Australian market.

In excellent overall original condition, no cracks or chipping. There is some patination that reflects this being a genuine vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures 18.5cm (h) x 20cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century German Rosenthal porcelain novelty pestle/mortar ashtray made for Townson & Mercer Australia

$40

Offered for sale is this unusual vintage 20th Century German novelty porcelain trades sample/ashtray, made by Rosenthal for the Australian distribution arm of Townson & Mercer and most likely dating from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Founded in Bavaria in 1879, Rosenthal is now a world-renowned producer of quality porcelain and crystalware. Townson & Mercer were a well-known English maker of scientific laboratory equipment that started operation in 1799. They now form part of the Record Electrical Equipment (UK) Group.

The fun design features a spouted-mortar form set with a pestle (finished with gold gilding). The pestle has the Rosenthal logo and wording, ‘Porcelain for chemical and technical purposes’; with the side having, ‘Townson & Mercer Distributors Pty. Limited’ in italicised lettering.

A great collectable for scientific-instrument lovers or novelty ashtray afficiandos.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping. There is some ocassional light patination to the gilding, as appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures (including pestle and spout) 6.5cm (h) x 11cm x 10cm approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: JN24044

Vintage 20th Century Chinese Jingdezhen Famille Rose vase

$85

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Chinese ‘Famille Rose’ porcelain vase, made post-WW2 and identified as dating from the early 1980’s. Most likely this originates from the Jingdezhen region.

Modelled on a Classical Chinese vase form, on a white ground the hand-applied design features a main panel depicting two ladies interacting with a young Court Official in a garden setting. There is some slight humour inferred in this scene, as it appears one lady (perhaps a maid) is rebuffing the demands (or maybe advances of) the young courtier. The reverse features a calligraphic dedication (which may relate to the main panel).

The shoulder is finished with a ruyi collar with alternating polychrome bands of yellow, orange and blue set with repeated foliate elements, which lead into the neck with two opposing floral emblems (symbolising good luck, long life) on a Famille Rose ground. The neck is completed by a final ruyi collar with yellow and orange bands on the rim.

Being hand-decorated places this example above the multitude of transfer-print-applied versions available.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping. There are three small areas on the rim where the yellow glaze wasn’t fully applied, which is not damage but reflects the nature of this being a handcrafted, individual work of art.

Measures 25cm (h) x 10.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand watch it may need a service, and is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).

This has been finished with an external mottled clear teal/greeny glaze with the internal surface being white.

In very good original condition. There are two very tiny frits (as pictured) but no cracks.

Measures 21.5cm (h) x 10.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. LARGE Vintage 20th Century Greek Classical Antiquity decorative vase

$60

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century Greek decorated earthenware vase, estimated as dating from the 1970’s to 1990’s.

Modelled on a Classical Era (510-323BC) dual-handled vase, the design features a combination of incised-work and hand-painting in matt colours. On a mottled red ground (with black foliate highlights) one side depicts two robed figures - possibly of the harvest goddess Demeter (seated) and god of fire/light Helios/Hephaistos/Phoibos carrying a torch. The reverse has a large foliate centrepiece. Of extra visual interest is this form having twist-handles rather than flat ones.

In very good original condition, no cracks or chips. There is some occasional wear to the paint (as pictured), as expected from a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction. The asking price takes this into account. There is some dust, left in place for a new owner to remove or leave in place.

Vintage 20th Century Australian art studio pottery vase

by Reg Preston

$195

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian art pottery studio lidded vase, created by master potter Reg Preston and estimated as dating from the 1980’s. One of Australia’s most important potters, Reg was born in Sydney in 1917. He initially studied sculpture at the Westminster School of Art (London) in 1938 before returning to Australia at the beginning of WW2. After attending a pottery course at Melbourne Technical College (now RMIT) in 1944, he then worked for Cooper and Cook’s before opening his own studio at Warrandyte in 1947. Part of the post-WW2 ‘alternative living’ movement of creatives moving to Melbourne’s outer north-eastern suburbs, in 1958 he helped form the highly-influential and popular Potters Cottage Co-operative (along with fellow potters (and wife) Phyl Dunn, Gus McLaren, Arthur Halpern and Charles Wilton). In the early 1980’s Reg and Phyl moved to Gippsland and created a new studio at Woolamai. Actively producing work up until 1995, he passed away in 2000. Reg’s significance to Australia’s 20th Century domestic pottery movement is reflected by his works being held in National and State Galleries, as well as various corporate and private collections. Signed ‘Preston’ on the base.

The eye-catching design features a rounded, square stoneware form with fitted domed lid. Using a ‘green/gray pepper’ glaze ground, there are a series of five contrasting applied organic, abstract shapes in cream, pale blue and oxide tones. Reflecting Reg’s signature freedom of expression and confidence in the medium, this allows for multiple interpretations and viewing angles - some are perhaps birds, human faces or sea creatures (one looks like a whale).

The interior and inside of the lid are also glazed.

A wonderful original example of domestic art studio pottery.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping.

Measures (with lid fitted) 14.5cm (h) x 14.5cm x 14.5cm approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. $65

Offered for sale is this stunning vintage 20th Century hand-decorated studio art pottery charger, made by Margaret Fairweather and dating from 1998. Despite research (and Margaret being an obviously talented artist), no further information on her can be offered at this time (although RMIT Melbourne do offer the Margaret Fairweather Scholarship for jewellery design, so there may be some link).

A unique example of Australian studio art pottery.

The charming design replicates a classical ‘Moon Flask’ form of the 16th-17th Century. UNIQUE Vintage 20th Century (1991) Australian Art Pottery Dingo teapot by Brian Upton

$165

Offered for sale is this fantastic vintage 20th Century Australian Art Pottery teapot by Brian Upton, dating from 1991. As well as being self-taught, during the early 1980’s Brian worked and studied with Malcolm Boyd at Black Cockatoo Pottery in various locations (Essendon, Ascot Vale, Stratford and Bairnsdale) before eventually establishing The Blue Wren Gallery and studio at Bairnsdale. His technique and artistic expression was primarily organic, hand-formed pieces (rather than wheel-thrown) characterised by heavy and colourful dripping glazes. Incised on the base ‘Upton 91’.

The fun and endearing design features an organic dual-conical teapot form with semi-gloss dark brown underglaze. Reflecting Brian’s use of Australian flora and fauna, the finial and thumb-rest create a stylised dingo poking its head and tail from the body and handle. The upper surface has been covered with his signature heavy drip-glaze, layered using oxide and dark green tones.

The construction technique reflects Brian’s hand-formed ouvre - especially visible in the thumb-work along the upper and lower join of the body.

There is a possible connection for inspiration of the design for this piece and artist Lin Onus’, ‘Adventure of X and Ray’ series (or his rubberised sculptures) – as both were working and showing during this period, Brian may have seen an early example of these characters. He may have also been commenting on the fact that Dingos were almost entirely eradicated from the Gippsland environment due to colonisation.

A humourous, thoughtful and unique piece of Australian Pottery.

In excellent original condition. No chipping or losses. There are two very small firing cracks along either side of the spout, and one small spot where the glaze was missed (as pictured). These reflect the hand-made nature of art pottery, and have occurred during the creation process.

Measures 12.5cm (h) x 14.5cm (diameter, body only) approximately.

RARE Vintage 20th Century Australian Art Pottery charger

by Nell McRedie

$175

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century Australian Art Pottery glazed charger, made post-WW2 by Nellie (Nell) McRedie and estimated as dating from the 1950’s. A highly-talented designer and creative artist, Nell (born 1901) originally qualified as an architect (one of Australia’s earliest graduates) and worked from 1923 to 1932 for various important firms in NSW and Queensland. During her time in Brisbane she studied pottery and in 1932 (after returning to Sydney and teaching pottery at the YMCA), established a commercial business with her younger brother Robert (in Epping). In a 1936 newspaper interview Nell stated, ‘Pottery-making is definitely an art inasmuch as the design is a purely individual thing’. Recognition for her work developed with regularly shown at the NSW Society for the Arts - and by twice winning the Elizabeth Soderberg Memorial Prize for Pottery (1947 and 1951). Nell continued creative work and production right up until passing her in 1968. Examples are held in the National Gallery of Australia and several domestic galleries. Incised ‘NMC EPPING’ on the reverse.

On a cream earthenware body with pale green ground and applied, dark green glaze the striking design features seven stylised leaves (possibly oak). The six large (and one small) leaves have been ‘scattered’ across the surface, creating a naturalistic appearance (as if floating on water) that uses negative space and deliberate randomness to create a joyful freedom. The eye can play, wander and enjoy this organic quality. The kiln appears to have (either deliberately or accidentally) run slightly hot during the firing, creating a the slight blurred/bluing effect of the darker glaze (as well as causing several small blisters). This adds to, rather than detracts from its unique appearance – and may indicate this was an experimental piece.

This is an unusual example of Nell’s work - no other comparable example could be found. A unique and highly satisfying original piece of art pottery from this desirable maker.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping. The glaze has developed a tight craquelure.

Measures 31cm (diameter) x 2.8cm (h) approximately.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping.

Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Antique 20th Century possibly Irish porcelain and sterling silver tourist vase

$28

Offered for sale is this charming antique 20th Century porcelain and sterling silver souvenir/tourist transfer-ware vase, possibly made in Ireland and estimated as dating from 1922. This year is significant - as it saw the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty that would formalise the creation of the modern Republic of Ireland. The silver collar is hallmarked for London and with a year-code gothic ‘g’. The maker’s hallmark ‘D.L’ refers to Schindler & Co (registered by a David Loebl, 9 Aldermanbury Avenue, London). The company provided a range of sterling silver mounts as well as importing high-end Bohemian glassware (such as by Rindskopf and Kralik).

On a squat, bulbous twin-handled vase form, the design shows a detailed, hand-coloured image of the The Treaty Stone of 1691, river Shannon and historical centre of Limerick in the background (including St John’s Castle).

In very good original condition, no damage or loses to the transfer. There is some patination to the collar, one small internal chip to the vase (and the collar has lifted slightly in that area). The asking price takes all this into account.

Measures 5cm (h) x 6.5cm (diameter at widest, excluding handles) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Fully hallmarked, with ‘Germany’ and with model number 18210 on the reverse.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (also known as the Little Flower or Little Flower of Jesus), is one of the most well-known and popular modern Catholic saints.
