ITEM: JL23010

Vintage 20th Century Australian Leo Neuhofer art pottery vase Jam Factory era

$275

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century glazed studio pottery vase by Master Australian ceramic artist Leo Neuhofer, most likely dating from the late 1980’s and created during one of his residency/workshop periods at the Jam Factory (Adelaide). Signed ‘Neuhofer’ on the base. Before commencing work as a thrower at Bennett’s Magill Pottery (1979 to 1986), Leo undertook a BA in Visual Arts at the University of South Australia. His extensive body of work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Australia. Leo has also completed several public art commissions and his pieces are found in private, corporate and gallery collections. In 2005 he was awarded the South Australian Ceramic Award. Moving from the production of purely ‘art pottery’ in the 1990’s, his ouvre now focuses of producing sculptural works rather than the decorative/practical. Leo also sat as judge on the 27th Gold Coast International Ceramic Art awards (2010) panel.

This delightful piece strongly reflects Leo’s distinctive use of colour and sgrafitto during the 1980’s/early-1990’s to create bright, heavily worked and textured surfaces. Multiple, heavy glazes have been overlaid that blur, adding movement and dynamism. This offers a wonderfully organic, free interpretation - with perhaps animal or human figures appearing from a multiple of viewing angles.

A great and deeply satisfying original example of 20th Century Australian art pottery from a significant artist.

In excellent original condition, no chips, frits or losses.

Measures 15.5cm (h) x 16.5cm (diameter) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: JN23034

Antique 19th/20th Century English(?) porcelain trinket tray with Greek Hermes/Nike in manner of Samuel Alcock

$55

Offered for sale is this antique 19th/20th Century porcelain trinket tray, most likely English in origin and either made for/by (or in imitation of) Samuel Alcock's Neo-Classical Revival range. The estimated age is from the late-19th to early 20th Century. A hand-painted ‘H’ is on the reverse.

The design features a Classical Greek representation of the Olympian/Messenger god Hermes (or given the slightly androgynous nature of the figure, possibly Nike). Given that Hermes is associated with having multiple loves (of both genders) it’s possible this piece has a hidden message of love and passion for the recipient.

The central image appears transfer-printed with the colouring and gilding completed by hand.

In very good original condition, no cracking or loses.

Measures 11.6cm (h) x 5.7cm (w) x 1cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand watch it may need a service, and is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).

Vintage 20th Century Mid-Century Modern art pottery vase

$35

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century glazed art stoneware pottery vase, most likely made in Australia and dating from the 1960’s to 1980’s. Unfortunately despite research, further information on the potter (‘Lisa’) can’t be shared at this time.

The smart and engaging design offers the ability to enjoy this piece from a variety of viewing angles. A tertiary band of repeated abstract green and black glaze brushstrokes are divided by a secondary background glaze in deep sea-blue/turquoise. Underneath this is a primary glaze of olive (on the body) and sea-blue (on the rim). The interior is finished with a coffee/cream colour.

A delightful piece of vintage art pottery.

In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping. There is one small spot on the rim where the primary glazing wasn’t applied (as pictured).

Vintage 20th Century Taiwanese pottery Chinese Zhou Dynasty-style censer

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Taiwanese-made glazed terracotta censer, sourced by CAMBURWARE (Melbourne) and most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. CAMBURWARE started in 1962 and operated until the 2000’s, offering a range of domestic decorative items and kitchen appliances.

The classical design is based upon archaic Chinese bronze vessels of the Zhou Dynasty (1046BC to 256BC). It features a three-footed form with stylised mythological creatures set around a bulbous, banded middle. Beneath the rim rim is a repeated geometrical border, and mounted on each side are two Foo (or Shishi) dogs. All this is covered in a clear deep green overglaze (in imitation of bronze).

A charming and attractive devotional item (or decorative depending upon your choice) for any home, business or temple/shrine.

No cracks, there are two very tiny frits (as pictured).

The joey is in excellent condition, the mother in very good overall condition (with some small losses, as pictured).

ITEM: AP23015

RARE 20th Century English WSC-production seahorse jug/pitcher possibly by Wade

$125

Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century English glazed art pottery pitcher/jug, possibly made by Wade and dating from 1941 to 1952. This piece was made under the WW2 Wartime Concentration Scheme (WCS) and as such is an extremely rare item (especially in Australia). During this period, production limits were imposed upon English manufacturers for items non-essential to the war effort (or immediate post-war recovery) so output of ‘art pottery’ was very limited. The attribution to Wade has been based on the similarity of this piece to their 1930’s Art Deco designs. Founded in 1867 (at Stoke-on-Trent), unfortunately the Wade factory went into administration in 2022 and has now ceased production. The backstamp has a large ‘A’ (which the WCS limited to only 30 factories (including Wade)).

Also of interest is the original Australian retailer’s sticker (Clive King). Starting in the 1930’s Clive King retailed hardware, building and construction items at 5-7 Atherton Road, Oakleigh and advertised locally as ‘The Hardware Man’. The business has been written about by author Helen Gobbi for the Oakleigh and District Historical Society. Still noted as trading in December 1956 they are noted as also operating a store at 367 Flinder Street, Melbourne (given the Oakleigh site always appeared advertised as a ‘timber yard’ it’s most likely this jug was retailed through their city store).

The fantastical and entertaining design (which reflects a strong Art Deco influence) features a stylised repeated image of a seahorse floating above large waves, with a seaweed spray located at the top of the handle and spout. Given the waves rising form, dripping water-spray and overall shape the designer was probably aware of (or deliberately referencing) the famous Japanese Ukiyo-E woodblock ‘Great wave off Kanagawa’ by Katsushika Hokusai.

With a limited production and fascinating social history, this item is a very desirable piece of art pottery!

Over time the soft green glaze has developed a very subtle craquelure. There are no chips or cracks, only one very small abbrasion (as pictured) that’s hard to spot but noted for a complete item description.

Measures 13cm (h) x 14.5cm (body diameter, at widest) x 19cm (long, including handle/spout) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Vintage 20th Century Japanese Fitz & Floyd Incorporated

'The Franken Stein' novelty mug

$35

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Japanese ‘The Franken Stein’ novelty pottery mug, made by Fitz and Floyd Incorporated and dating from 1978. Produced mainly for the American market, this company created a wide variety of practical dinnerware as well as comical mugs. Factory marked underneath and with its original paper ‘FF Japan’ label.

A rare find in Australia.

The incredibly-detailed modelling of this design showcases a caricature of Mary Shelly’s reanimated monster Frankenstein. This version looks pretty happy however, as he shuffles off in search of caffeine and milk crates ...

No cracks, there is a very tiny loss to the underneath of one finger (as pictured) that’s hard to notice but have recorded for a full description.

A fun display or practical item!

Measures 12.5cm (h) x 15cm (l) x 9.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Vintage 20th Century Italian? Sailing ship/Venetian gondola double-sided pottery vase

$35

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century incised and glazed pottery vase, most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. The country of origin and maker is unknown (there is a small signature/factory mark underneath) however given the style and subject matter it’s possibly Italian.

Set on a classical urn form with squared base, the double-sided design features a stylised 3-masted clipper ship in full sail. Surrounding this are clouds, a seabird and the sun/moon (depending upon your interpretation). The other side portrays a stylised Venetian gondola, with gondolier and two passengers.

So you’re able to select a different image depending upon your taste – gives double the value! Perfect for any sea-lover, beach-side home or business etc.

Vintage 20th Century Australian art/studio pottery bowl

by Charles Wilton

$75

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian hand-decorated and glazed pottery art/studio bowl by Charles Wilton, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1992. Scottish born (in 1916), Charles emigrated to Australia at Melbourne Technical College in the 1930’s (then working with Eric Juckert) before establishing his own pottery. After serving in WW2, he moved to Warrandyte where he was a founding member of the Potters’ Cottage in 1958 (which played an important role in the development of Australian studio pottery). Eventually retiring in 1992 and moving to Philip Island, Charles passed away in 2001. Signed ‘C Wilton’ on the base.

The form consists of a low, circular body with broad opening. The glaze design is a deep translucent dark/moss green with three lighter shapes, these being highlighted by six deep scarlet/red oxide daubs.

A smart, satisfying original piece of art/studio pottery by an interesting figure within 20th Century Australian pottery history.

Measures 11.5cm (diameter) x 6.8cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Australian art pottery posy vase

by David Geschke

$60

Offered for sale is this antique 20th Century Australian hand-decorated and glazed porcelain posy art vase by David Geschke, most likely dating from 1980’s to 1990’s. David’s work is categorised by the use of rich glazes and fineness of his potting.

The perfectly-balanced form of this posy vase is reflected in the thinness of the lip - incredibly fine, with the quality of detail you’d expect to find on high-end Japanese art pottery. The body carries a speckled-brown, soft pink and white glaze that David appears to have utilised a Braken Fern leaf to create the patterning.

A clever, well-proportioned and smartly designed piece of original artwork.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Canadian Tlingit Bear Spirit tray

by Ruth Meechan

$60

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Canadian Tlingit Nation (Haida Tribe, North-West USA) design pottery tray, created by Ruth Meechan (born 1914, passed 2007) and most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. Attribution research is unclear if Ruth was of Haida descent or simply worked as an artist in a ‘First Nation style’. The piece may also connect to her association with Gene Barker - another Canadian potter (whom she worked with closely in her early career) whose art business she eventually took over (in Maple Ridge, Ontario). Originally trained as a graphic artist and illustrator, Ruth became a founding member of the British Columbia Potters Guild and was also a pottery teacher and social justice activist. Ruth would apparently dig her own clay to work from the surrounding area of Maple Ridge.

The design is a bold, totemic representation of a Bear Spirit. Tlingit believe animals (originally being human) can take on human form to interact with our world (and visa versa). The bear has a special place within this understanding, as it hunts and eats natural resources (salmon, berries, etc) akin to the way humans to – so its soul is deeply connected to theirs.

Measures 15cm (l) x 8.5cm (w) x 1.5cm (d) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century reproduction ancient Minoan frieze tile

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century painted terracotta tile, most likely made in Greece and dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. An original descriptive label appears on the back in German, English and French.

The highly detailed design replicates a famous ancient frieze from the Palace of Knossos in Crete. It depicts the sacred Minoan culture’s veneration of bulls by leaping over them – an incredibly dangerous feat by anyone’s standards (although in southern France a variation of this activity still continues to occur).

A charming decorative item for home or business.

Measures 23.5cm (h) x 15.5cm (w) approximately.

LARGE Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea art/studio pottery lidded bowl

$95

Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea art/studio pottery lidded bowl, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. Engraved ‘Awae KTU PNG’. Commencing in the 1960-70’s, Papua New Guinea’s modern pottery movement is yet to be fully appreciated in terms of its social, cultural and collectable significance – so the time to buy good pieces like this is now!

The powerful design features repeated incised abstract anthropomorphic patterns (carved after applying the glaze and before firing). These forms potentially link the potter to the Sawos People of the middle Sepik region. Over this the potter has added soft smoky green/grey drip glaze. A satisfying and enjoyable individual piece of artwork.

No chips or losses, please note there are two firing cracks that are not damage but reflect this is a unique piece of art pottery and not mass-produced (as pictured).

Measures 22cm (h, including lid) x 27cm (diameter, including handles) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Vintage 20th Century English London comedy cartoon souvenir tile

$20

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century English decorated porcelain souvenir tile in a fancy metal mount, most likely dating from the 1960’s. The maker is possibly Britannia Tiles, however the artist ‘S.B.’ is currently unable to be attributed.

Rendered in a comic-book style, what at first glance seems a simple souvenir actually reveals itself as delightfully quirky, satirical and cheeky piece that reveals more and more as you study it. There are a multi-layered series of wry literary, social, cultural and political observations and ‘classically English’ in-jokes throughout.

Great fun for any Londoner, Anglophile or former UK resident living here in Oz!

Please note there is a small firing crack in the bottom right corner (as pictured), that is not damage but has occurred during its manufacture.

Measures 16cm x 16cm approximately.

UNUSUAL Vintage 20th Century Japanese

'Blanc de Japonais' 3-footed vase

$35

The elegant, restrained design actually references antique Chinese Celadon examples from the Song Dynasty (960-1279AD) - of which the Japanese were a large sales market. Each foot is a stylised dragon, classical symbols of good luck, power and prosperity – perfect for bringing Feng Sui into any home or business.
