2 x Vintage 20th Cent English Royal Worcester fine bone china shell bowls

$95

Offered for sale is this pair of vintage 20th Century English Royal Worcester fine bone china footed trefoil bowls, dating from the 1960’s. Rare to have a set – as are mostly found for sale singly.

Inspired by earlier 18/19th Century Rococo/Georgian examples, these are expertly modelled on stylised shells. They can be used for multiple purposes – eg food service (jams, table salts, lollies, etc), floating flowers, holding pot pourri or for pure decoration.

Charmingly fun (as well as functional) items for any home or business.

In excellent original condition. No cracks or chips. One bowl has two very small marks (as pictured) that the price takes into account – however these appear to be under the glaze and are not damage.

Each measures (triangular) 10cm x 10cm x 10cm and are 6.5cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. As with any vintage watch I recommend allowing for a service. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: JA23016

Vintage 20th Century Australian EG Greenway clamshell pottery bowl

$55

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian ‘E G Greenway’ glazed art pottery bowl, most likely dating from the 1950’s. Established by Herbert Greenway in Blackburn (Melbourne) in 1949, the firm produced a widely-successful range of domestic and art pottery (often with fantastical and slightly ‘odd’ designs).

With perhaps a gentle nod to original 16th (and later 19th) Century Pallissy ware, this amusing design features a large central clam-shell bowl with three supporting barnacle feet. The bowl has been finished in a soft sandstone-coloured glaze.

Apart from pure decoration, this piece offers multiple uses – it could hold water (to float candles or flowers), contain pou-pourri, act as a candy/sweets bowl or even food service (eg salad).

No cracks, chips or damage.

Measures 23.5cm (l) x 17cm (w) x 12cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. ITEM: JA23005

Vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea pottery jug

Sepik River Sawos People

$75

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Papua New Guinea hand-decorated glazed earthenware art pottery jug, most likely dating from the 1980-90’s. Engraved ‘Abaka KTU PNG’. Commencing in the 1960-70’s, Papua New Guinea’s modern pottery movement is yet to be fully appreciated in terms of its social, cultural and collectable significance – so the time to buy good pieces like this is now!

The powerful design features repeated incised abstract anthropomorphic and floral patterns (carved after applying the glaze and before firing). These forms potentially link the potter to the Sawos People of the middle Sepik region. A ‘modern’ touch is reflected in the light application of pale sea-gray drip overglaze to the neck of the vessel.

A satisfying and enjoyable individual piece of modern art pottery.

Measures 20cm (h) x 13.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century English Royal Doulton 'Seriesware' Robin Hood quatrefoil dish

$55

ffered for sale is this vintage 20th Century English Royal Doulton ‘Seriesware’ hand-coloured porcelain quatrefoil plate, dating from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Under the direction of Charles Noke, from the 1890’s onwards Royal Doulton produced a series of themed ware - broadly covering history, sports, folklore and nostalgia.

The design references a scene from the life of (yes I know totally imaginary, but there’s irony for you) Robin Hood. It depicts Robin (who’s obviously just shaken down some bourgeoisie-titled-noble ruffian baddy-type) redistributing the stolen wealth of the Proletariat to a disenfranchised generic-peasant-type-figure. Good on you Robin, smash the State!

In perfect original condition, no cracks, chipping or damage.

Measures 24.5cm (h) x 7.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

LARGE Vintage 20th Century USA Arnels (USA)

Neo-Classical Revival glazed ceramic vase

$45

Offered for sale is this large Vintage 20th Century ‘Arnels’ high-glaze ceramic vase, most likely made in the USA and dating from 1981. A USA-based firm (started 1953 in Beaverton, Oregon), Arnels created a wide range of ceramic moulds and finished pieces (their most famous being the ‘Mushroom’ series). This piece was completed by Mary.

The design is modelled on a Greek vase of antiquity (around 200BC-0AD). The four panels depict scenes from a classical Bacchanalian feast with wine, grapes and music all happening within a raucous atmosphere (like a modern music festival just without the EDM). The glaze is over a gloss white body with soft blue wash (that nicely highlights not only the figures but the icananthus leaf, egg-and-dart and other styling elements).

An impressive decorative item for any hallway or as a dramatic table centrepiece.

Over time the glaze has developed a lovely overall cracquelure. No cracks (rings true) however there are two very tiny chips (as pictured) that the price takes into account.

Measures (with lid) 50.5cm (h) x 18cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

No cracks or chips. One vase has a small area with tiny marks, and there is some light wear to the gilding on both rims (as pictured). The pair are priced accordingly.

Both measure 24.5cm (h) x 10.5cm x 10.5cm approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Japanese creamware ginger jar

$25

Offered for sale is this Vintage 20th Century Japanese creamware and gilt decorated ginger vase, most likely dating from the 1970’s.

The charming design features a pair of pheasants roaming through an idealised garden landscape. There are classical (and auspicious) Japanese plants and trees, with a large Maple overhead and surrounding Chrysanthemum and Peony blossoms. As the birds are male and female, the scene most likely symbolises good luck, wealth and prosperity for a newly-married couple.

In very good original condition, no cracks or chipping. There is a tiny amount of wear to the gilding on the finial (reflected in the price).

Measures (with lid) 21cm (h) x 12.5cm (diam.) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Australian art studio pottery plate

by Leonard Bell

$120

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original studio art pottery charger/bowl by Australian artist Leonard Bell, most likely dating from the 1970-80’s. Leonard obtained an Arts Diploma (Ceramics major) from the Bendigo School of Mines as well as a teaching degree (1967). Key in establishing Leonard’s own style was a year spent working for John Davidson at New Mills Pottery, Cornwall, UK (from 1974-5) which instilled a brushwork style that influenced his lifelong ouvre. Returning to Australia in 1976, Leonard based himself at Woodstock on Loddon, near Bendigo and established his own pottery before later in his career moving to Mondrook (NSW).

Using ochre, earth, pink and blue glaze tones, Leonard has crafted a wonderfully abstract design with multiple ways of interpretation. In some ways this work is reminiscent of TROIKA pottery (also from Cornwall) and shows the obvious influence of Leonard’s time spent in the UK.

A clever, stylish and thoroughly satisfying piece of Australia studio pottery.

Correctly impressed with 'LB' on the base. In very good condition, with no chipping or losses. There are two small glaze cracks (which have occurred during firing and are not damage), however they don’t detract and are mentioned for the sake of proper curating.

Measures 5cm (h) x 33.5cm (diam.) approximately.
