UNIQUE Vintage 20th Century (1995) original Australian hand-painted art plate 'Shepherd of Dreams'
$75
Offered for sale is this fun and unique vintage 20th Century Australian original decorative ceramic art plate, dating from 1995. Despite extensive research, the obviously-talented artist ‘Kaz’ could not be identified at this point (one possible person may be Kaz Morton from the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria). Signed twice (once in paint, the other etched).
The charming and whimsical design features a hand-painted poloychrome colour-scheme on a large dished plate form. Set against a blue stippled ground with gold stars, central is the ‘Shepherd of Dreams’. Dressed in a vibrant winged costume and make-up influenced by the famous Italian Harlequin/Pantalone (or Venetian/French ‘ball masque’). With an enigmatic smile and open gaze they rest with arms crossed and hold a crescent moon. Their headress contains twisting fern stems, a bird taking flight, a loveheart and another moon (mounted on a twisted wand or small pole). On the edge and to their right a small hand contains an open eye in its palm, another fun detail!
Framing this is a two-tone twist-rope border and outer orange band with the wording, ‘The Shepherd of Dreams. Who lights the way, forever calling come.’. A final multi-coloured external band (in varying greens, purple and browns) completes the image. The outer rim and reverse have a mottled turquoise glaze.
Measures 1.2cm (h) x 30cm (diameter) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. 3 x Vintage 20th Century original Australian decorative bird tiles by Shirley Australia
$60
Offered for sale is this set of three vintage 20th Century Australian ceramic decorative tiles, made by ‘Shirley - Australia’ and estimated as dating from the 1990’s. Despite research not much is available about the artist (who appears to have produced a range of other tiles) however they may have been from Queensland.
The design of each has been expertly hand-piped (a hard skill to master) and then infilled with a range of bright polychrome glazes (as done by English Moorcroft Pottery, etc). They depict a stylised series of birds (finches and wrens most likely) perched amongst a foliate background of blossom and branches.
As they could be hung indoors or outside, they offer a flexible and charming design element for any bird-loving home or business. You could also set them into a wall if wanting permanent installation (you’d just need to remove the applied backing).
Two are in excellent original condition (one in very good condition with two very small losses – as pictured). All ready to hang with nothing to spend.
Each measures 40cm (h) x 10cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century West German Dümler and Brieden 'tribal pattern' vase/jug
$65
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century West German ‘tribal pattern’ decorated vase/jug, made by Dümler and Brieden and estimated as dating from the 1960’s. Started in 1883 in the town of Höhr-Grenzhausen, the firm passed through various family owners and became established via commercial earthenware such as jugs, beers steins and mugs. During the German ceramics boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s it created a wide range of decorative Mid-Century Modern pottery (including ‘Fat Lava’ pieces) and competed with firms such as Scheurich and Ruscha. The three candidates for this example are Peter Dümler, Paul Zimmerling or Rudolf Christmann. The company ceased production in 1995.
The fun and utterly Mid-Century Modern design features a bulbous form with sleek, curved handle, broad shoulders and wide neck. Two-thirds of the body have a brown glaze with sgraffitto-style finish then a broad, incised band of alternating and repeated impressed geometric patterns (inspired perhaps by Bitossi) and finally a small band repeat of the brown glaze found above. The handle is finished in a very deep (almost black) brown.
Allows for being viewed either as a vase or jug, depending upon your preference.
In excellent original condition, no cracks. There is a very small area chipping on the lower portion below the handle, hard to notice but noted for a full item description – and yes taken into account with the asking price.
Measures (excluding handle) 20cm (h) x 15cm (diameter, at widest approximately).
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century French Limoges porcelain transferprint vase of Nice
$45
Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th Century French transferprint souvenir vase, made by the firm of Limoges (Monaco/Monte Carlo) and estimated as dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s.
Modelled in the form of an Archaic Greek or Roman vase in high gloss white porcelain with gold gilding. The design features a polychrome stylised image of the waterfront of Nice, capital of the glorious French Riviera. Given the: lack of development, low height of buildings, presence of tramcars (which stopped in 1953) and prominent roof dome of the famous Le Negresco hotel (completed 1913) it would most likely place this image around the 1930’s. The front and rear shoulders have a highly-detailed floral triumphal border (in the French style) in gold gilt. The reverse of the vase is blank.
A charming decorator’s piece for your home or business.
In overall excellent original condition, no chips or cracking. There is some light patination to the gilding and transferprint, appropriate for this being a proper vintage piece and not modern reproduction. On the reverse there is a small mark underneath the glaze – not damage but indicative of the piece’s handmade origin.
Measures 21.2cm (h) x 9.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Japanese Mingei art pottery vase
$95
Offered for sale is this charming Japanese ‘Mingei’ (民芸) art pottery vase. Developed as an artistic movement by Yanagi Sōetsu (along with a small group of fellow craftspeople) within Japan during the 1920’s, Mingei sought to record, encourage and support ‘functional’ artistic design of everyday objects with a philosophy of simplicity, beauty, function and mass-scale accessibility using natural materials. Antique 20th Century German/Austrian Philip Boileau porcelain and sterling silver posy vase
$45
Offered for sale is this antique 20th Century ‘Philip Boileau’ porcelain and sterling silver posy vase, most likely German or Austrian in origin and estimated as dating from the first quarter of the century. Canadian/American artist Boileau was born in 1863 before his family moved to the United Kingdom in 1871. After studying art in Italy during his early twenties, he eventually returned to North America (Baltimore, USA) in 1897 and developed a successful career as a highly-regarded ‘Society’ portrait artist. Taking the opportunity to move to New York lead to further commercial success; with many commissions for advertising, posters, postcards, magazines and ceramics. Boileau’s ouvre expressed itself in well-executed, highly-romanticised watercolour and pastel images of middle- and upper-class women that become popularly known as ‘Boileau Girls’ during his lifetime. His most famous work, ‘Peggy’ (1903) was of his stage actress wife Emily Gilbert. Aged only 53, he passed away in 1917 from pneumonia.
The design features a classical posy vase form with graduated orange overglaze glaze and applied transferprint, the rim having an English sterling silver collar attached (it is unsure if this was done when new, or by a prior owner wanting to add value/appeal). The portrait image is of an Edwardian woman shown mid-torso, wearing a high-neck blouse and fur shawl, with Pompadour/’Gibson Girl’ style hair framed by a voluminous hat with ostrich feathers and flower posy (most likely Forget-Me-Not). A second, floating repeat of the flower posy motif is found across her arms. The wording, ‘Copyright 1907 Philip Boileau’ appears at the base of the shawl.
The London sterling silver collar has a maker’s hallmark of either ‘HP’ or ‘HPA’ – despite extensive research they can’t currently be identified, however the cartouche form would indicate a date range of 1916 to 1933. A strong contender may be Henry Perkins & Sons – who are recorded as providing silver mounts for various items from 1900 to the 1920’s. Unfortunately the application of the collar (or perhaps later damage) has lead to the date code and Leopard’s Head being difficult to discern.
A charming decorative piece.
The vase is in very good original condition, no chips or cracking. The mount is patinated, as pictured. Yes the price takes this into account.
Measures 12cm (h) x 6.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Vintage 20th Century Australian art pottery flambe glaze vase Geelong region
$25
Offered for sale is vintage 20th Century Australian glazed ceramic art vase, made post-WW2 and estimated as dating from the 1980’s to 1990’s. Despite extensive research, the artist (from the Geelong region) can’t be identified (it is signed on the base, and there is the remains of a pottery label).
With its deep red oxide high-gloss glaze the colour scheme appears inspired by the famous Royal Doulton ‘Flambe’ ware of the early 20th Century. The body is a compact, broad ‘meiping’ form in fine white clay. Of extra interest is the decision to cut a series of organic, freeform holes around the rim which have then been further highlighted with white slip. These are both wonderfully tactile as well as allowing for broader displays of flowers than a regular, single opening would allow.
In excellent original overall condition. No cracks or chips. Some light craquelure has developed, appropriate for this being a proper vintage piece and not modern reproduction.
Measures 20cm (h) x 13cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Vintage 20th Century German Melbourne 1930's skyline
souvenir transferware vase by Victoria Fine China
$14
Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th Century German miniature transferware souvenir porcelain and gilt vase, made by VICTORIA Fine China and estimated as dating from the 1930’s. This company produced a wide range of souvenir items for locations across Australia.
The well-detailed polychrome design features a north-westerly looking vista across the Melbourne skyline. Taken from a position on the eastern bank of the Birrarung (Yarra River) Marr Park, it captures a snapshot of the city’s historical architecture before Whelan the Wrecker knocked most of it over. Prominent are (amongst others) three important buildings: St Paul’s Cathedral, The Forum and Melbourne Town Hall.
Perfect for any lover of Melbourne and its architectural heritage.
In very good original condition, chipping or cracks. There is a very small amount patination to the gilding, appropriate for this being a proper antique/vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Original art pottery bowl weird and wonderful
$25
Offered for sale is this unusual Australian art pottery glazed bowl. Despite research, the maker is currently unknown (initials ‘PLW’ are incised on the base).
Whether deliberate or accidental, the eye-catching and fun design features a low, broad bowl form created from white clay. With the body all slumped and wobbly, I call this ‘drunken pottery’. Over this has been applied a heavy drip glaze in dark green and brown tones.
A wonderfully eccentric and original piece of art pottery.
In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping.
Measures 31cm (h) x 43cm (w) 17.5cm (d) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Tribal/Ethnographic-style
earthenware vase
$25
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century earthenware vase. Despite extensive research the country of origin is currently unknown, however the piece is estimated as dating from post-WW2.
The design features a squat, bulbous red earthenware form with ‘pie crust’ central band with upper portion having four decorative projections, the lid having a raised rounded finial. A mottled matt brown overglaze has been applied. The lid, upper and lower surfaces all have impressed floral, abstract and geometric patterns – along with some vertical sgraffito. The overall look could be roughly be described as ‘tribal/ethnographic’ in style; or perhaps inspired by Italian Bitossi pieces. It allows for appreciation at a variety of angles.
In very good original condition. There is some occasional patination to the body, and the lid has a small amount of chipping (all as pictured), expected from a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction. In as-found condition, the dust has been left for the next owner to decide if cleaning is appropriate. Please note a previous owner has glued felt to the base to stop it scratching surfaces.
Measures (with lid fitted) 21cm (h) x 12.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Antique/Vintage 20th Century German porcelain
half doll pin cushion
$45
Offered for sale is this antique/vintage 20th Century German glazed porcelain half doll pin cushion figure, estimated as dating from the 1900’s to the 1930’s. Despite research the manufacturer is unknown. Factory impressed ‘BT 1/0’ on the lower reverse.
The pretty design features a polychrome decorated figure of a woman wearing clothes of a ‘lady of court’ from Europe in the mid-to-late 18th Century. The painting on the face is particularly well done (especially as some mass-produced examples lack quality in this area).
In very good overall original condition. There is a very small wear spot on the nose-tip and small loss to the bottom of the right sleeve (both of which could be easily repaired if desired – I recommend The Doll Hospital in Malvern, Melbourne).
Measures 10cm (h) x 6cm (w) x 3.2cm (d) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century East German Brutalist style
fat lava glaze bowl
$25
Offered for sale is this vintage Brutalist-style 20th Century East German lava-foam glaze pottery bowl, estimated as dating from the 1960’s to 1989. Despite research the maker is currently unknown. Marked ‘Made in East Germany’ with the impressed model number 665.
The distinctive design features a low bowl form with an outer matt black ground, decorated by a series of white squares framed by an upper and lower white band. The interior is finished in a black gloss glaze. Its look is very reflective of Brutalist, former-Iron Curtain pottery – and given the horrific role performed by the STASI in spying on its citizens in the DDR, hard not to imagine the squares don’t look like robotic spy camera eyes.
A rare find in Australia.
In good overall condition, no chips. There is an incredibly fine firing crack (as pictured), hard to spot but noted for a full item description – yes this is reflected in the price.
Measures 5.5cm (h) x 11.5cm (w) x 2.3cm (d) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description. Please note the address and contact number on the reverse was blurred for privacy reasons.
Cash or direct deposit sale only.
