Vintage 20th Century Chinese hand-decorated vase
from Liling positive Feng Sui
$75
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Chinese decorated porcelain vase, made post-WW2 in Liling (Henan Province) and estimated as dating from 1956 to the 1960’s. The early factory mark has been hand-applied and not transfer-printed.
The attractive design is set on a classical ginger jar form in white porcelain. It consists of a primary scene, with a small bird (perhaps a sparrow) perched amongst cherry blossom. At the rear is a single cherry blossom, allowing the piece to be appreciated from two angles (or it would be reflected in a mirror). The rim is finished with a single gold gilt line.
There are multiple meanings to be found in this lovely original artwork – along with classical Chinese allegory of feminine beauty and power there is positive Feng Sui: for good luck, happiness, rebirth, new beginnings and health. There is also the name of the famous card game ‘Ma-ch’iau’ (or ‘Sparrow’) which infers social relaxation and entertainment.
In excellent condition, no cracks or chips.
Measures 9.7cm (h) x 11.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century French studio art pottery fat lava ewer by Cyclops pottery/Charles Cart
$375
Offered for sale is this stunning vintage 20th Century French ‘Cyclops’ fat lava art/studio vase, designed by Charles Cart and dating from the 1960’s. Based in Annency (Haute-Savoie Department, French Alps), not much is recorded about Charles however he is known to have been a scrap metal merchant during the 1950’s before becoming a maker of experimental Modernist art pottery in the early 1960’s. Highly-regarded for his wildly experimental technique that sought to expose underlying layers, he is regarded as one of the earliest French makers of ‘lava’ glazes. The style and design of this example means it is one of the hand-thrown studio pieces and not an externally-sourced body (his firm also sold more everyday tablewear).
A rare find in Australia, possibly the only one currently available.
On a tall, single-handle classical Mediterranean earthenware wine/water/olive oil jug form, Charles’ signature drip glaze has been thickly applied in ice blue over black and white. This has resulted in a multitude of organic ‘eruptions’ and ‘cyclops’ eyes that can be enjoyed from multiple angles. Not one area is the same!
This unique design piece will brighten and visually anchor any room - a thoroughly enjoyable piece of experimental Mid-Century Modern art pottery from this important 20th Century French designer.
In excellent condition, no cracks or chips.
Measures (including handle) 35cm (h) x 16cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

RARE Vintage 20th Century USA moulded statue
by Willard Stone/Frankoma Pottery
$145
Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century USA-made Mid-Century Modern ceramic moulded sculpture, modelled on an original work by artist Willard Stone and created by Frankoma Pottery (Salpulpa, Oklahoma). Dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. This firm was established in 1933, producing a wide range of collectable art pieces, dinnerware as well as commemorative items and continues operation today. Comes with its original factory paper authenticity tag and is hallmarked under the base.
During his life Willard Stone (born 1916, died 1985) was called ‘the foremost American wood sculptor of his time’. A self-identified Cherokee Indian, the expression of First Nations culture would be one of his dominant creative themes (along with nature observation, pacifism and the human form). At the age of 13 his right hand was badly damaged, ending an early childhood interest in painting and drawing. Undaunted, he took art classes and become an accomplished sculptor - training under prominent American Indian tutors Woodrow Wilson Crumbo and Acee Blue Eagle. His ouvre expressed itself in elegant (often elongated), organic shapes inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco; ranging from those with a sense of playful fun/naivety (perhaps bordering on twee/kitsch) to powerfully serious, deeply personal and engaging pieces. His natural material was wood, however would occasionally work in clay and bronze.
Stone’s natural talent was acknowledged in his early twenties by important Mid-Western philanthropist and art collector Thomas Gilcrease, who in 1946 offered him an important residency and ongoing support. From 1961 he was able to work full-time as an artist, establishing a private gallery/museum (in Locust Grove, Oklahoma). His works are held by important Mid-Western museums as well as within private and corporate collections. During his life Stone received various commissions; including for the National Hall of Fame for Famous American Indians and National Cowboy Hall of Fame. He received a series of awards including an: honorary degree, Distinguished American Citizen and honorary Doctor of Humanities as well as winning juried art competitions.
A rare (and possibly the only) example available of his work currently available in Australia.
This charming statue provides a strong combination of Stone’s nature observation and First Nations heritage (reflecting the importance of horses to Plains Tribes). Using a slender and rising form, a mare offers support to her nuzzling foal. There is both a powerful expression of maternal care alongside tenderness in this moment - as seen in the mare’s firm expression and her forming a more solid portion of the main body. And apprehension/fear in the foal as it seeks comfort and reassurance. Incorporating a gentle curve, your eyes are cleverly drawn upwards to their heads; making this a work that can be can be appreciated from a variety of angles. It has been moulded and coloured to simulate the original wood grain.
In excellent original condition. No cracks or chips.
Measures 30cm (h) x 5cm (w) x 6cm (d) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Some occasional soft marking/spotting remains, and there is some cracking (but no losses) caused by the fluctuation in kitchen temperature over a long period of time. To protect the glaze, its spring hanger was left in place during the cleaning process and has not been removed.
Measures 24cm (diameter) approximately.

LARGE Vintage 20th Century Chinese Famille Jaune
dragon vase positive feng sui
$245
Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century Chinese Famille Jaune vase, most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1970’s. It bears the mark of being made in Jingdezhen, famous as the historical ‘home’ of quality Chinese pottery for over 2,000 years. Research indicates it may have originate from the Xinguang Porcelain Factory (which is recorded as using the ‘N’ mark).
In a classical Famille Jaune palette, the eye-catching design incorporates both ancient Chinese and Buddhist cultural symbolism. The main ground of the vase body depicts a yellow ‘sky’, with two green dragons gazing at a flaming pearl of wisdom they’re chasing. The sky is set with multiple Buddhistic clouds and flames. The base is divided by a ring of spuming waves supported by peonie blossom. The neck begins with a turquoise Ruyi collar that leads to a pink ground with dual triumphal foliate bunches (matched with two bats, symbolising longevity). Below each bat is a stylised Chinese symbol. The neck ring is finished with a multicoloured border referencing ancient Zhang/Shou style patterns.

UNIQUE Antique early-20th Century English Wedgwood Jasperware butter/cheese-dish conversion to ashtray
$175
Offered for sale is this unique antique early-20th Century English Wedgewood Jasperware butter/cheese dish, with a factory mark ‘I’ for 1906 (the last year before the ‘Made in England’ backstamp came into use).
Find another one like this! At some point in its 117-year history the original lid has been separated and a small amount of damage occurred to the rim. Rather than throw this expensive luxury piece away, a previous owner has cleverly added a smart and heavy cast-brass ashtray rim so it could enjoy another useful life. Creating a truly one-off piece. Please note in no way do I condone the practice of tobacco use.
The design around the dish alludes to Classical Greek mythology (a Neo-Classical speciality of Wedgewood) and depicts a series of maidens, foliage and statuary. The figures possibly represent The Fates and/or the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The brass rim is of high quality with an excellent weight to the casting. It features a stylised triumphal wreath that matches the dish nicely.
A charming decorative piece for any home or business. Offers the flexibility of also using it for holding small items (eg car/house keys, pens, pencils, brushes) or as a small planter base.
Measures (with rim fitted) 15.6cm (diameter, at widest) x 6cm (h) approximately.
In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century Balinese celadon ceramic vase
by/school of Hester Tjebbes
$70
Offered for sale is this charming 20th Century Indonesian glazed pottery vase, most likely made by Tanteri Ceramics in the Balinese village of Pejaten and dating from 1985 to the 1990’s. Either attributed to, or was created under the direct guidance of renowned French ceramic artist Hester Tjebbes. Training in the 1970’s saw Hester study with famous potters Takao Sakuma (Japan), Philip Gearheart (USA), Janet Jones (Wales) and Paul Soldner (USA). From 1985 onwards she has annually resided in Pejaten to teach and support their production and expansion of the Balinese decorative pottery industry. In her words Hester aims to create: ‘according to my desires, creations inspired by nature with fine and harmonious shapes’. The design shows all the trademark qualities found in Hester’s ouvre. It shows detailed observation of the human form (along with animals, another of her signatures). The shape of the earthenware body is another reflection of her style and handling of clay to produce an elegant, tactile form. Research indicates this piece may possibly be the work of Pejaten potter I Wayan Ngeteng, a pupil of Hesters.
Using a celadon glaze and in fine detail the image of perhaps a goddess, mythological figure or traditional dancer has been created; gazing out with a strong expression. They have been depicted wearing a complex four-part headdress, floral earrings and decorative necklace.
In excellent original condition, no cracking or chips. Please note there are two very small areas where the glaze wasn’t applied (beneath the left ear and on the rim), that is not damage and is noted for the purposes of a full description.

Vintage 20th Century English Crown Ducal Ware
by Charlotte Rhead vase 'Golden Leaves' pattern
$95
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century English-made Crown Ducal Ware ‘Golden Leaves’ vase (Pattern 4921), designed by the famous Charlotte Rhead and estimated to date from the 1942 to 1952 production period (after she had left the company). Originally released in the late 1930’s, ‘Golden Leaves’ quickly became one of the company’s best selling lines. Designing during the 1920’s to 1930’s and a respected contemporary of Clarice Cliff and Susie Cooper, Charlotte is known for her elegant and attractive designs that offered a more ‘traditional’ look whilst still embracing elements of Art Deco colour and styling cues. Somewhat currently eclipsed by Cliff and Cooper, the time to buy under-appreciated pieces by Rhead (such as this example) is now! Features the Type 481 Pattern hallmark (no pierced holes in crown) and impressed 127 (or 129).
The charming tube-lined design features an alternating set of autumn leaves and blossom in orange and pale olive-gray tones. There is a (rather poignant) single leaf, caught forever fluttering towards the ground. The differing pattern allows the piece to be appreciated from various angles. Just below the neck is an angled band of repeating lozenges. The colours show correct factory lustre gloss finish.
In excellent original condition, no chipping or losses. Over time the glaze has developed a soft craquelure and there is a small amount of staining to the internal base section.
Measures 22cm (h) x 12.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Vintage 20th Century Chinese Famille Rose
miniature fish bowl Qianlong honorific mark
$35
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Chinese export Famille Rose glazed earthenware bowl, most likely made post-WW2. Has a reign mark ideogram for the Qianlong Emperor (1711 to 1799), however this is most likely a ‘honorific’ mark of respect rather than a 200-plus year old antique example.
Modelled in the (miniature) form of a classical Chinese goldfish/koi bowl. The repeated design features four panels: two depict a seated man and woman, with a (somewhat intrusive) onlooker (don’t want no scrubs!), the other two with floral bouquets. Framing these are are stylised bats, floral borders and Chinese kanji characters; all highlighted with gold gilding. The top of the bowl has six differing blossoms.
In very good original condition, no cracking or chips.
Measures 6.2cm (h) x 8.5cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.

RARE Vintage 20th Century Australian Janet Grey Studio
art pottery bowl
$80
Offered for sale is this unique vintage 20th Century Australian-made art pottery bowl, made by the Janet Grey Studio (Melbourne) and most likely dating from late 1940’s to 1950’s. This well-regarded art and domestic pottery studio was originally established at South Yarra in 1940 by John Arthur Barnard Knight and Isabel Grose; and then continuing production from their Malvern location until the 1960’s. John first studied at the School of Applied Art at the Melbourne Technical School (now RMIT) and subsequently joined the faculty in 1934 as a teacher (becoming Head of the Pottery Department in 1939). After RAF service during WW2 the studio was further expanded upon, as well as John remaining an important teacher of pottery at RMIT until 1975 (influencing many Australian potters still in production today). This design is an unusual, possibly one-off (an experimental or commission work?) - as there are currently only two other examples of Janet Grey Studio pieces made using a painted glaze rather than being incised. It is unclear if this is the work of John or Isabel.
In a broad cream earthenware bowl, a classical side-on portrait of an older male has been skilfully crafted. Their face has strong and distinguished features; with a long-distance gaze that is particularly arresting. Slightly unusual is the fact that no ear has been depicted. Given one of the other painted examples is of a lyre bird, it may be this depicts a stylised Aboriginal person which formed part of a thematic series.
In good original condition. No chipping or losses. Over time the glaze has developed a soft craquelure that confirms its authenticity as a vintage item and not modern reproduction.
Measures 6.5cm (h) x 22.5cm (diameter) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century Australian? art pottery vase
$25
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century glazed ceramic art pottery vase, most likely Australian in origin and estimated as dating from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Despite extensive research, it’s unable to provide further information on the potter ‘Lea’ at this time.
The hand-applied glaze is an interesting and unusual mottled matt coffee over a gloss cream (with brown highlights). This style of glaze has some similarity to 1930’s The Bakewell Pottery’s ‘Newtone’ range as well as ‘Diana Ware’ of the 1940’s to 1950’s.
A charming decorative item for any home or business.
In excellent original condition, no cracks or chipping.

2 x Antique 20th Century Japanese wall plaques
$18
Offered for sale is this pair of antique 20th Century hand-painted wall-hanging plates, most likely Japanese in origin and estimated as dating from the 1910’s to 1920’s. These are probably examples of early production, created before pressure from Western ceramic producers forced Japanese makers to mark their pieces with ‘Nippon’, ‘Made in Japan’ or ‘Export’ backstamps post-WW1. Various factories produced a wide range of quaint rural and waterside scenes for overseas markets, with these examples seeming in imitation of Noritake’s ‘farmhouse’ range.
Each features an idealised waterside cottage in a rural location, painted in a naive style. The colours are bright and cheery.
No chipping or cracks. There is some patination underneath the glaze that confirms these being proper antique items and not modern reproductions. The asking price takes this into account.
Each measures 10cm (diameter) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description. Please note the address and contact number on the reverse was blurred for privacy reasons.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Original Australian art pottery lidded vase by Steve Drew
$95
Offered for sale is this original art pottery lidded vase, made by Australian potter Steve Drew and dating from 2009. Based at Smythes Creek (near Ballarat) since 1974, Steve is a well-known and active potter (most recently showing works with the 2023 Hidden Gems Art Trail) in the central Victorian region. Originally trained at the Ballarat School of Mines and RMIT, Steve’s works often feature abstract, organic brushwork glazes. In 2013 he was an award-winner at the Clunes Ceramic Awards. Much of his modern work has transitioned to more sculptural output - often capturing his other lifelong passion for horses.
This one-off piece provides a more unusual representation of Steve’s ouvre, having a deep grey/black glaze over a white clay body (much of his work features lighter glazes and earth-toned/natural clays). Creating negative space with deliberately-left-open, unglazed areas has formed a dynamic and engaging look. His signature use of abstraction with organic, fine and loose loops is evident by highlighting all open areas using a bronze/gold overglaze. This intelligent piece can be enjoyed and appreciated from a variety of different viewing angles.
A stylish and collectable piece of original Australian art pottery.
In very good condition overall, no cracks or chipping.
Measures (with lid fitted) 20cm (h) x 19cm (diameter, at widest) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only.
