Antique 20th Century original watercolour French(?)
mens fashion scene
$95
Offered for sale is this antique 20th Century original watercolour, possibly French in origin and estimated as dating from the 1910’s. Despite extensive research the artist’s signature (“G.V”?) could not be identified - however given the fashions depicted, style and subject matter it has potentially been produced for reproduction in a magazine/catalogue such as Belle Jardinière, Maison Manby, La Mode Française Officielle etc.
Skilfully painted in a Realist style and using a brusque manner it depicts a summery Race Day event. A smartly-dressed elongated male figure (wearing a three-piece slim cut suit in grey with walking-stick) is centrally framed by a middle/upper class crowd dressed in a range of Edwardian-era clothing (including a French military officer with kepi and red-striped jodpurs, several women in long gowns with varied accessories and men with top hats and a boater).
Of particular interest in dating the work is that underneath his binocular case is what appears to be a members badge showing ‘1915’ – potentially a deliberate clue or stylistic device by the artist? There is also a rather fun dynamic to this busy scene; whilst three-quarters are facing away (towards the race?), one figure in a top-hat is actively looking away from the action with his binoculars!
In very good original condition. There is a very occasional foxing spot or two and single horizontal crease where a fold may have previously been (not obtrusively so but noted for a full item description) – all these could be addressed by a conservator if felt necessary. Please note there is no glass (as found).
Measures (framed) 61cm (h) x 36.5cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. As with any vintage watch I recommend allowing for a service. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian painting by listed artist Brian Nunan
$4,750
Offered for sale is this important vintage 20th Century original painting (oil on masonite) by acclaimed Australian artist Brian Nunan, dating from the 1950’s. Born in 1932 and self-taught, Brian has mostly operated outside the ‘traditional’ Australian art scene; instead choosing his own independent and vital creative path.
Working across the Kimberly region (as a cattle-drover during the 1960’s) alongside First Nation stockmen and subsequent time spent living in the Far-Northern Australian Outback (also experienced by/with his young family) exposed Brian to First Nations culture - deeply informing his creative output. Often crafted on a monumental scale his expressive paintings possess a spiritual and charged quality that is immediately engrossing and powerfully felt.
This early example is one of two landscape images depicting Glebe - painted by Brian when in his early/mid-twenties in Melbourne (returning after a 12-month period working at an inner-city Sydney woolstore (possibly T.W. Green’s or The Farmers & Graziers Cooperative)). It may therefore represent an actual location or artistic response combining various elements of location and experience from that time.
Having participated in multiple solo, group exhibitions and many private commissions his works are held in collections across Australian and around the world. Based at their well-known gallery in Castlemaine, Victoria (established in partnership with his wife Pat in 1997) he continues to paint and exhibit. I would like to warmly acknowledge and thank Brian and Pat for authenticating the work and personally informing its curation.
Using a bold, reductive colour palate that utilises both heavy impasto and brevity, in a cursory Impressionist style the image depicts Glebe’s post-WW2 inner-city landscape (pre-development, widespread demolition and gentrification). Starting from a high-point the central street view rapidly sweeps down and then uphill with two-thirds of the upper right ground dominated by a series of three-storey Victorian terraces. Combined with the road surface of deep greys, blues and pinks the eye then falls down this grouping and follows towards the lower double- and single-storey homes beyond (in an almost Focus-Pull fashion). Distant cottages and commercial buildings are formed by effective, simple strokes. Devoid of human figures the static nature of the built form is in stark contrast to the active and broiling sky – with clouds perhaps indicating a thunderstorm is coming (or has passed).
There is speed and energy throughout the strokes (providing a sense of how quickly Brian was laying the paint) combined with confident play and skill demonstrated by the deliberate leaving of undercoat (a warm cream tone) unpainted throughout the buildings - very much in the manner of leaving raw canvas unpainted to introduce negative space.
The more time you spend investigating this painting, the more interesting and enjoyable it becomes - an important foundational and highly-collectable work by a unique Australian artist.
In very good original condition. There is some light patination to the surface, appropriate for this being a correct vintage item. A conservator could easily perform a cleaning if felt necessary.
Measures (framed) 65.5cm (h) x 81cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. RARE Vintage 20th Century Art Deco Era Qantas
Empire Airways advertisement
$110
Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century Art Deco-era original Qantas Empire Airways flying-boat advertisement, published by the Sydney Morning Herald as part of ‘The Home Annual’ series on 15 October 1938 (Page four).
The design features a series of polychrome and black-and-white photographic vignettes (with accompanying text) demonstrating the luxury, exoticism, convenience and budget-friendly advantage of the flying boat fleet. The lower panel has a wonderful image of Empire Class VH-ABF (launched in March 1938) skimming into land across Sydney Harbour (where it would pull up at their Rose Bay jetty). This aircraft went on to serve in both the RAAF and RAF during WW2.
A wonderful example of an age of travel completely obliterated by WW2 and the subsequent Jet Age.
In very good original condition. There is some light patination, appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.
Measures (framed) 45cm (h) x 37.5cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century (1970) original oil painting
Buddhist/Hippie Art
$60
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian original oil painting (on Masonite board), painted by a Sue Payne and dating from August 1970. Despite extensive research (and where the painting was sourced) further information on Sue can’t be provided at this time; however she may have come from/lived in the Ballarat region. As other pieces couldn’t be found for comparison this may be a one-off work.
Crafted in a slightly Naive style, the design features an overall theme of Buddhism and nature. In classical portraiture style, a central ovoid device has a golden stylised image of the Buddha (or a Buddhist monk/guru) set against a snow-capped mountain range (most likely the Himalayas) with dramatic red sky and framed in the foreground by a series of abstract ‘candles’ or ‘buildings’. This is surrounded by a repeated Sanskrit-like text (that I was unable to have translated) that may or may not be an actual language message/mantra. The background is a dark purple and black ground with stylised trailing green vines set with small yellow flowers.
Given the Western awareness (and allure) of the sub-continental ‘hippie trail’ and Counter-Culture/New Age Movement being at its height during this time, it may reflect the artist’s desire to visit/response to an actual visit or simply religious inspiration from this important time in 20th Century social history.
In excellent overall condition. Unframed.
Measures 51cm (h) x 40.5cm (w) approximately.
Vintage 20th Century (1963) Scandinavian Airlines original August calendar page
$60
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Danish Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) original calendar page, designed by famous danish artist Otto Nielsen. Originally published as part of their ‘Tops of the world’ promotional calendar and dating from August 1963. Nielsen rose to prominence during the 1950’s and 1960’s, creating a series of posters and calendars (which sought to capture the novelty, adventure and glamour of international airflight during this time) for SAS. An author as well as successful illustrator he wrote multiple travel books and several children’s stories (which he also illustrated). Since his passing in 2000, a company based in Sri Lanka (Stick No Bills) has reproduced a limited high-quality range of Neilsen’s most enigmatic posters.
Given these were meant to be thrown away after use, this example is a rare survivor.
The attractive Post-Modern design features a wonderfully abstract polychrome wilderness landscape with warm orange background undertones and sky. A large bear rambles in the lower foreground whilst Nielsen’s trademark ‘small plane in the sky’ motif soars overhead to its destination. Given SAS were the first airline to offer a trans-polar route (in 1954) and the ‘North Pole Shortcut’ (in 1957), the scene most likely depicts the Alaskan wilderness with the plane heading to Tokyo (via Anchorage).
The framing was done in England (during the 1960’s) at The Ravensbourne Galleries (Beckenham, Kent) – also the site of the Beckenham School of Art.
In very good original condition.
Measures (framed) 37.5cm (h) x 28.5cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century (1930) original French Art Deco
Lanvins Perfumes advertisement
$75
Offered for sale is this elegant vintage 20th Century Art Deco French ‘Lanvin’ perfume advertisement, originally published in the July 1939 edition of ‘Plaisir de France’ (New York World Exposition cover) magazine. Founded by Parisian milliner Jeanne Lanvin in 1889, the company would first go on to become a highly-respected couturier for both women and children (the company logo has Jeanne and her only child, Marguerite). Being a successful and ambitious businesswoman would then see Jeanne extend to become the first Parisian designer to create a made-to-measure clothing line for men (in the 1920’s) as well as entering the world of perfumes (starting in 1925 with ‘My Sin’). After her passing in 1946 the company continued under her Marguerite’s guidance and remains in business to this day.
Plaisir de France was a popular fashion/sartorial publication launched in October 1934 by the L’Illustration Group and competed against similar magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair - continuing up until the mid-1970’s. It would often feature famous photographers such as Pierre Jahan and Willy Waywald.
The wonderfully elegant Art Deco design features Lanvin’s famous ‘black ball’ perfume bottle with large graduated ribbon cascading from the neck and acting as a decorative banner for the title ‘Les parfums de Lanvin’ (‘Lanvin perfumes’) and it’s five iconic perfumes: Arpége, My Sin (Mon Péche), Scandal, Rumeur and Prétexte. This sits on a ground with the repeating statement, ‘De Lanvin est sur toutes les levres avec les six nouveaux rouges assortis aux poudres nouveaux’ (‘Lanvin is on everyone’s lips with six new reds matched to the new powders’).
A sophisticated and classy design element for any home or business.
In excellent original condition, ready to hang with nothing to spend. Please note the advertisement was carefully removed for inspection and reinstated. None of the display items are included.
Measures (framed) 45cm (h) x 35.5cm (w) x 3.5cm (d) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Antique late-19th/early-20th Century original Australian
oil painting of peony roses
$75
Offered for sale is this charming antique 19th/20th century Australian original oil painting, estimated as dating from the 1890’s to 1920’s. Despite research unfortunately the artist could not be identified (there are some pencil marks on the back of the frame) however they may have been from the Sydney area - as the canvas was supplied by H H Groth Junior & Company (when at their inner-city 529 George Street address), well-known suppliers of artist’s materials from 1852 until at least the 1950’s.
In a (slightly naive) Realist style, the painter has rendered a large amount of pink and yellow rose peony rose blossom on a pale blue mottled ground. A rose expert might be able to identify the type! Over time the original glaze has yellowed slightly, adding a lovely overall warm tone. A previous owner appears to have repainted the frame.
Perfect for home or business decoration.
In very good overall condition. There is one area of patination to the canvas (as pictured).
Measures (framed) 82cm (h) x 36cm (w) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century original Australian artwork
Rainbow lorikeets
$60
Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th Century Australian original mixed media artwork (plaster and paint on board), created in Melbourne and estimated as dating from the 1980s to 1990’s. Despite research, further information on the artist (F Purchal?) and F.P. Studios of Diamond Creek can’t currently be provided.
In a relief-carving style the artist has built up a raised surface before applying polychrome oil paints. With a good degree of detail and slightly naive realism, the design has two Rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus) perched on a Red Flowering gum against a cream ground.
A great decorator’s piece, or gift/self-treat for any bird lover.
In excellent overall original condition.
Measures (framed) 33.2cm (h) x 28.1cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand watch it may need a service, and is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).

LARGE Vintage 20th Century original French tourist art
oil painting
$145
Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century original Tourist Art oil painting (canvas on masonite), most likely French in origin and dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. The signature is undecipherable, however there were any number of jobbing artists making works in this style (generally for sale around Montmatre).
In a broadly ‘Impressionist’ style, the painting presents an imaginary 19th Century Parisian winter-time street scene (probably during the 1880’s to 1890’s). There is a great degree of action and life depicted - from couples/individuals strolling, a horse and cart to the warm glow of light from cafes.
A fun decorator’s piece for anyone wanting a retro look to their home or business.
In very good original condition. There is some occasional patination to the frame and canvas, as expected from a correct vintage item and not modern reproduction.

2 x Antique 20th Century Australian bird prints
by John Mitchell Cantle
$45
Offered for sale is this pair of framed antique 20th Century Australian prints, estimated as dating from 1900 to 1919. The originals were created by popular 19th/20th Century illustrator, cartoonist and ornithological artist John Mitchell Cantle (1849 to 1919). He is considered to be Australia’s first native-born avian artist, creating hundreds of well-detailed watercolour and gouache paintings during his lifetime. These examples may have been published as part of a book.
The first depicts a magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) feeding a cricket to a group of three fledglings. The second is a pair of male and female Scarlet Honeyeaters (Myzomela sanguinolenta) feeding and perched on fuchia blossom.
Both in very good original condition.

Vintage 20th Century (1978) original Henk Guth oil painting Ormiston Gorge
$325
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian original landscape oil painting by Dutch artist Henk Guth, most likely dating from 1978. Born Henk Gerrit Guth in 1921, he studied at the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design from the late-1930’s until 1942. During WW2 Henk joined the Dutch Resistance and was actively involved in its activities (resulting in him being captured and interned by the Gestapo, then escaping and rejoining the Resistance). In 1960 he emigrated to Australia, first to Victoria before eventually moving to Alice Springs in 1966 – where he would open a well-known gallery, become deeply-engaged with local Aboriginal culture and spend the remainder of his life. In 1971 (working with fellow Dutch artist Fritz Pieters) Henk commenced work on his most famous series, ‘Panorama Guth’, a highly-realistic 33-panel cyclorama of a Central Australian landscape. Completed in 1975 it was officially opened by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. His early works were highly-detailed (reflecting a European sensibility) before transitioning to a more contemporary and simplified tonal depiction of landscape (obviously influenced by the Hermannsberg Mission artists, such as Albert Namajira). Passing away in 2003, Henk was granted special permission to be buried at Ormiston Gorge.
The work depicts one of Henk’s favourite locations to represent, Ormiston Gorge. It depicts a north-looking view taking in the billabong, reflected sky and nearby cliffs. Anchoring the work is a central white gum, balanced against a warm-toned sky that may be set during the early morning or evening twilight. Dating from the 1970’s, this particular example has a high level of impasto, working of the canvas and attention to detail that lessened slightly in Henk’s later, more cursory pieces. Of extra interest for art collectors is this being double-signed, with the reverse having Henk’s full signature.
Measures (framed) 35.5cm (h) x 61cm (w) approximately.
Antique early-20th Century (1907) original English etching Duke of Wellington
$35
Offered for sale is this antique early-20th Century English original lithograph etching, created by artist Sir Emery Walker and dating from 1907. Originally published as plate within ‘The Letters Of Queen Victoria 1844-1853 Vol. I’ by Arthur Christopher Benson (John Murray, London). A leading figure within the Arts & Crafts Movement, Sir Emery is held as one of the key individuals in the revitalisation of English printmaking, typography and etching.
The highly-detailed design features a mid-figure portrait of ‘The Hero of Waterloo’, the 1st Duke of Wellington KG in full military regalia. Based on an original oil painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence (that hangs in Apsley House, current home of the Dukes of Wellington and the renowned Wellington Collection). Printed in a sepia tone.

Vintage 20th Century (1969) original Swiss artwork of
St Mary Magdelene
$125
Offered for sale is this large vintage 20th Century original portraiture pastel/chalk-on-masonite artwork, most likely from Switzerland and dating from 1969. Despite extensive research (and multiple attempts to decipher the signature) further information on the artist (a P Stackmann/Stackmani/Shelmann/Slielmann/Shidmann/Shilmann/Glickmann?) cannot currently be provided. Was originally framed by W Burghardt in the Swiss village of Horden (on Lake Zurich).
In a wonderfully skilled hand and engaging style, the artist has captured a deeply-humanistic portrait of Saint Mary Magdelene. Depicted in her classical red robes, with downcast eyes and soft, enigmatic smile (very much in the manner of da Vinci’s ‘The Mona Lisa’) her head and shoulders have been smartly framed with a background ‘halo’ that cleverly outlines this pose. It has created a warm moment, a feeling of quiet repose and reflection.
Being deliberately created on the reverse of the board (using its grooved texture) has meant the colour is dispersed, so that your eyes bring the image ‘together’ when viewed at a distance. This adds a soft glow and textural warmth.
Possibly inspired by an existing (probably Renaissance) artwork or a unique example of this artist’s work.
A bold piece or original art for veneration or decoration in any church, home or business.
In very good original condition. There are two smudge marks that the asking price takes into account (as pictured).
Measures (framed) 84.5cm (h) x 64.5cm (w) approximately.
Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Antique 19th Century (1875) original German handcoloured lithograph architectural drawing
$65
Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century German hand-coloured lithograph etching, printed for Berlin firm Ernst & Korn and dating from 1875. Founded in 1851, Ernst & Korn remains in business today (now operating as Ernst & Sohn) and is one of the largest specialist publishers for structural engineering in Germany. During the 19th and 20th Centuries, the company issued an extensive folio of books covering all aspects of domestic architecture, civil engineering and industrial building design.
Completed as part of a larger folio (an ‘Architektonisches Skizzen-Buch’ or ‘Architectural Sketch Book’), the lithograph features a highly-detailed, one-dimensional artist’s rendering of a substantial German Neo-Gothic Revival home (with two floorplans) for a Mr A vom Rath. It is unclear if the building was actually constructed or simply provided an example of Ernst & Korn’s suggested designs.
A charming decorator’s piece for any home or business.
In overall very good original condition (especially at 149-years old!). The original glass for the frame is not present. Due this absence, there is some patination to the mount card and occasionally the lithoprint (as pictured) – which also has one faint watermark (a professional conservator could address this if felt necessary). The asking price takes all this into account.
Measures (framed) 29.5cm (h) x 33cm (w) approximately.

Antique 20th Century original Arab Brand Jams chromolithoprint label
$45
Offered for sale is this rare framed antique 20th Century original chromolithoprint ‘Arab Brand Jams’ label, retailed by Wilkinson & Co Ltd and most likely printed in Australia. Estimated as dating from 1900 to the 1920’s. A well-known Adelaide firm, Wilkinson & Co commenced operation in 1882 and expanded to operate throughout South Australia (and Broken Hill) through various branches and agent network. Their flagship store was located in Grenfell Street, Adelaide CBD. They eventually ceased operation in the 1990’s.
The eye-catching and well-detailed design features an overall desert setting, with solo bedouin seated on a camel and pyramid in the background. To the right of this scene is an oversize pile of assorted fruits – plums, cherries, apricots, apples, grapes and berries. As these labels were intended as purely disposable items (for either pasting onto wooden crates or jam tins) this is a rare survivor.
Has been professionally mounted in a rustic, country-style frame. Measures 22.5cm (h) x 42cm (w) approximately.
In excellent original condition, no fading or damage.

3 x Vintage 20th Century original Australian
school/educational posters
$50
Offered for sale is this group of vintage 20th Century Australian school/educational posters, most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s. Despite research the artist is currently unknown.
Originally produced as part of a domestically-published book series: ‘The Happy Venture Playbooks/Readers’ (where the characters were known as Dick and Dora), the bright and colourful images depict: Dick climbing a tree and reaching for a ball, Dora playing with a doll and the same doll alone on a grassed area. They feature a large coloured band (either red or blue) below each scene (which may have assisted with the learning lesson).
In very good overall original condition. They have all been mounted onto a loose backing card (that a conservator could remove if required) with two hole-punches added at the top. Each has a small amount of storage/use wear and some occasional folds, reflecting these being proper vintage items and not modern reproductions.
The two larger posters measure 45cm x 56.5cm, and smaller 30cm x 44cm approximately.

Vintage 20th Century original Vietnamese mixed media textured landscape/oil painting
$175
Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Vietnamese textured oil painting (on board), most likely dating from the late 1940’s to 1960’s. The identity of the artist is unknown, however they appear to have signed the work in two places.
The attractive design is a combination of flat and three-dimensional media. It depicts a bucolic scene of two buildings (possibly temples) set on either side of a lake/river in a mountainous and forested landscape. A lone figure is portrayed standing on the verandah of the larger building. Given all the elements portrayed reference classical Chinese ideas of scholarly nature study/observation, it may be that this figure represents a priest or learned person. It invites the viewer to contemplate the beauty of nature, finding peace and inner meaning.
Its original wooden frame has been covered in a layer of gesso, painted with a mahogany finish and completed with a floral design (these have faded over time but are still faintly visible).
The painting is in very good condition (some light craquelure has developed), and frame shows patination from use and storage over time. These all reflect this being a genuine vintage item and not modern reproduction.
Measures (framed) 37.5cm (h) x 31.5cm (w) approximately.

RARE 18th Century (1773) English maritime etching
Captain Cook 1st Journey to New Zealand
$395
Offered for sale is this rare antique 18th Century English copperplate engraved maritime chart, published in 1773 as part of John Hawkesworth’s, ‘An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere : and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour / drawn up from the journals which were kept by the several commanders, and from the papers of Joseph Banks, Esq. by John Hawkesworth, LL.D. ; in three volumes ; illustrated with cuts and a great variety of charts and maps relative to countries now first discovered or hitherto but imperfectly known. Volume 1 (1773)’ (Strachan & Cadell, London).
Measurements and observations for this chart were created from 22 October to 6 December 1769 (during Cook’s first voyage). Split into one main and two secondary panels, it details Tolaga Bay (below, right) - where water and firewood was taken, the Coromandel Peninsula (Mercury Bay and Firth of Thames) and Bay of Islands (above, right). Mercury Bay was so named as being where Cook and HMAS Endeavour’s astronomer (Charles Green) measured the Transit of that planet, before exploring the Firth (main panel, left) and then travelling north to the Bay of Islands.
In very good original condition (considering it is 251 years old). Shows correct folds from being a map removed from its volume. There is some foxing and one small loss (appears to be done by silver-fish) - both could be addressed by a paper conservator if felt necessary.
A previous owner has had this framed at some point during the 1980’s to early 1990’s.
Measures (framed) 47cm (h) x 61cm (w) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

2 x Antique/Vintage 18th/19th Century original Japanese ukiyo-e by Suzuki Harunobu
$175
Offered for sale is this pair of antique/vintage 19th/20th Century Japanese original ukiyo-e woodblock prints, first created by Suzuki Harunobu (1724-1770) in the Edo Period. Both are estimated to date from the 1800’s to 1930’s (so not first editions). Harunobu is considered one the greatest innovators and masters of the ukiyo-e art form, having produced the first full-colour woodblocks in 1765. Little is known about his personal life, however (somewhat unusually) he used his real name when publishing - and ground-breakingly chose to depict scenes of daily street/urban life (often with a slightly ‘knowing’ or comical social-observational edge) rather than purely classical imagery. He was also one of the most well-known producers of bijin-ga (beautiful women), and during his lifetime is high-quality works and techniques inspired many imitators and contemporaries.
The first is titled, ‘Crow and heron, or young lovers walking together under and umbrella in the snowstorm’ (circa 1769). Depicting a scene from this classical Japanese myth of concealment and revelation, it shows a man and woman strolling through a snowy, treed landscape. Their left and right hands intertwine and support the umbrella handle, almost touching – indicating their mutual support of/interest in each other and perhaps adding a slight frison with the potential of touch leading to something more. Of particular interest is the use of embossing to cleverly detail her white kimono and simulate the surface of fallen snow. There is some fading and light foxing.
The second is known as, ‘Courtesan standing on an engawa’ (circa 1767-68). Its central figure is a lone geisha, standing outside on the engawa (verandah) and gazing across a tsubo-niwa (indoor garden); whilst behind shōji panels, two other geisha entertain a guest by playing the shaminsen and conducting a tea ceremony. This enigmatic image offers opportunity to consider the scene in greater detail – just some questions could be: why is she waiting? Is she in training to be a geisha, and listening in as a way to learn? Who is the guest? This print also features the use of embossing to detail folds on her white kimono. There is some fading.
Upon inspection for photography, each was (importantly) found to have not been cut-down for framing (and therefore some printers marks remain) and remain bordered by their original rice-paper. The frames have some occasional light marking from storage.
Each measures (framed) 37cm (h) x 32.5cm (w) approximately.
Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.
Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee.
