Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original oil-on-canvas painting by Australian artist Clark Barrett, titled ‘Woolshed wall’ and painted in 1984. Well-known in the Broken Hill area as a successful contemporary artist (and former arts teacher), he has been creating work for over 40+ years. Throughout his long career, Clark has expressed a passion for the vast Outback and history of inland Australia.
Originally purchased through Dianne Lean at Southlands Gallery, Canberra (full provenance paperwork from the gallery is included with the painting).
This is an important early composition, offering a series of interior vignettes inside the famous Antro Woolshed at Bimbowrie Station, South Australia (built 1867). Being set within a bale of First Class Bimbowrie wool, the device of utilising a series of ten ‘slats’ mimics the flooring found in older shearing sheds across the country. It also smartly allows for contrast of light and dark, with the interior light having a smudgy/sepia quality that reflects the red soil of the surrounding country.
A strong, intelligent and satisfying original work of art.
As Clark’s new works list from upwards of $2,500-plus, this early example is fairly priced and reflects excellent value. This sale will also fall within the Resale Royalty Scheme managed by the Australian Copyright Agency.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian landscape mixed media painting by David Benson

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original mixed media artwork by Australian artist David Benson, most likely painted in the early-1990’s. Now based in the Northern Rivers region of NSW, David is both a creative artist and lifelong spiritual seeker. He has owned multiple art galleries (the latest being Studio88 Gallery in Murwillumbah). Since graduating from the National Art School (Sydney) in 1978, collectors of his work have included Greg Norman, John Fahey and Clare Roach. His career has also included designing for Country Road, Kadu Surf wear and Holy Cow Creations. I'd like to thank and acknowledge David for authenticating the work and providing an estimated creation date and location (during his time when operating a gallery in Birregurra, Victoria).
Created in a bold, bright and energetic style this work depicts a rural landscape scene in (or around) the town of Birregurra (and possibly the Winchelsea Bridge).

A great work that successfully combines Outsider Art naivety with gothic menace. A gloomy landscape devoid of people, with the moon silently rising over a picture-perfect cottage. Nothing moves. It’s like ‘The little house on the prairie’ – only after zombies ate the family.

Offered for sale is this vintage original 20th Century oil painting, attributed to Italian Realist artist Fulvio Di Sorrento (who signed as both 'Fulvio' and 'Fulvio Di Sorrento', well known for his vibrant marine paintings depicting the Capri Coast in the Bay of Naples.

This painting depicts a charming stone villa courtyard decorated with flowers, architectural arch and stairway. If we could see over the wall to the right, I would hazard a guess the Capri Coast would be in glorious view.

Offered for sale is this pair of antique late-19th/early 20th Century Eva Hollyer chromolithograph prints. Eva (born 1865, died 1948) is well-known as a highly skilled English painter of sentimental pieces focusing on family, motherhood and romance.
Both images depict 18th Century couples playing instruments in a salon (with some serious flirting going on obviously).
The first (marked ‘9004 B.B’) shows a seated male pianist accompanying a female singer, and in the second (marked ‘9005 B.B’) this is reversed with a female pianist and a chatty male chellist (she’s just not that into you mate but good on you for trying).

Offered for sale is this antique original English Georgian etching, printed in 1807 by J Stratford, Holborn Hill, London. This was originally published as part of D W Hughson’s six-volume 1805-1809 series ‘London; Being an Accurate History and Description of the British Metropolis and its Neighbourhood, to Thirty Miles Extent’. Amazing to think that mad King George III was still on the English throne when this was created.
The etching expertly depicts Fish Street Hill (inner London), looking south to north from Old London bridge with Sir Christopher Wren’s Monument to The Great Fire of London prominently featured. Before the demolition of the bridge, this was a main thoroughfare and well-known vista.
Perfect for Jane Austen lovers!

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original watercolour created by Australian artist Peter B Bryan, and dating from the 1980’s. Painting since the early 1970’s (trained in watercolour by William Boutho and David Taylor; and acrylics under Herman Pekel), this work reflects Peter’s skill in the difficult medium of watercolour and his architectural background. In 1977 he was a founding member of the Ballarat Artists Society; with works found in corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas. I'd like to thank Peter for his generosity in authenticating the work and its location at Buninyong (near Ballarat), noting that it may have been part of a series commisioned by Ralph Durr for sale in his antique store.
The work skilfully depicts the Victorian era 'Brim Brim' Homestead in the Goldfields town of Buninyong, Victoria. Set underneath a brooding sky, there is an enjoyable, balanced contrast between the warm cream colours of the building and dark tones of the clouds.

Vintage 20th Century original Indonesian Batik cloth (framed)

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original Indonesian Batik cloth, dating from the 1990’s and originally framed in London (so its travelled a long way!). Unfortunately the framers (The Frame Shop) closed many years ago and their address (90 Shepherds Bush Road, London) is now a pharmacy (however in May 1990, the previous London ‘01’ Code was replaced with ‘071’, so this helps offer a date).
The Batik cloth depicts a charming village scene with farmers, food, a home, the natural world and working buffalo . Surrounding this is a repeated border of flower blossom.
A perfect decorators item for your business (eg restaurant) or home.
The frame was carefully cleaned and treated with beeswax to bring up the patina.

Vintage 20th Cent. original oil painting Australian landscape

Offered for sale is this 20th Century original oil painting, created by K Jurviens (or Jueviens) and most likely dating from the 1950-60’s. Despite research I cannot find more about the artist, however given the surname is from the Baltic countries it’s most likely they were a post-WW2 immigrant to Australia.
Skilfully using an Impressionist style in heavy impasto, the artist has (with a palette knife) offered a dark and gothic rendering of the Australian landscape. The paint has slightly dulled with age and dirt, so it could offer a different perspective if professionally cleaned (however I quite like its current look).

Vintage 20th Century original Australian etching by listed German/Australian artist Marga McEvoy

Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th century original etching by German/Australian artist Marga McEvoy. Research offers that Marga was born in Germany in 1946 and moved to Australia in the mid-1960’s. Graduating from Bendigo Institute of Technology in 1967, she worked as a trainee at Sturt Pottery from 1969-1970 before setting up a workshop in Bendigo in 1971. Marga returned to Sturt Pottery as a visiting potter in 1973 before taking up a position as lecturer in ceramics at Bendigo College of Advanced Education (in 1974). In 1975 she is recorded as exhibiting at Macquarie Galleries (Canberra) and Bonython Gallery (Sydney) as well as receiving a $2,400 Arts Council grant. In 1976 Marga exhibited for the Bendigo Pottery Award, and was one of the potters represented in ‘Selected studio potters of Bendigo and region’ held at the Bendigo Art Gallery in 1982. Marga also served as Vice-President on the Friends of Bendigo Art Gallery Committee. Her work as a skilled potter in the Bendigo area is well-known and held in various private and institutional collections.
What is obvious from this work is how Marga’s talent for pottery easily translated across to etching (although not unexpected given the importance sgraffito can have for potters). RARE Vintage 20th Century (1983) original print of Australian emu by Chinese artist Zhou Siqing

Offered for sale is this unusual and rare vintage 20th century piece of Chinese/Australia art heritage, an original lino or woodcut created in 1983 by artist Zhou Siqing. Zhou was brought to Australia in 1982-3 on a year’s scholarship to create a series of artistic responses to Australian wildlife. Offered through the Museum of Victoria’s Science and Humanities Scholarship Committee, this fellowship appears in the 1983 Australia-China Council Annual Report to Federal Parliament. Along with other Chinese artists, his scholarship culminated in works (most likely including this piece) shown during June-July 1984 in Melbourne at an exhibition titled ‘Australian wildlife through Chinese eyes’.
Titled ‘Emu’, this is either a linocut or woodcut printed on rice paper. Noted as seven of ten prints by Zhou.
An unusual work in depicting an ‘outsider’ perspective and interpretation on our unique wildlife. His other recorded works reference animals such as pandas, horses and condors. approximately.
At some point in its history this has been sold through Leonard Joel, Melbourne.

Antique 18th Cent (1741) original English George II etching from The Universal Penman 'Learning' by George Bickham

Offered for sale is this original antique 18th Century hand-coloured copperplate etching, printed in 1741 as part of George Bickham’s famous work ‘The Universal Penman’.
Titled ‘Learning’ this etching was created as part of a subscription series published from 1733 to 1741. A noted engraver himself, George Bickham assembled work from 25 prominent London writing masters to compile ‘The Universal Penman’, which became an important learning text for teachers and students alike. It is still referenced today by anyone studying English Copperplate Script.
A desirable gift (or personal treat) for calligraphers, teachers or academics. Or simply lovers of beautiful things.
In incredible condition at over 275+ years old - amazing to think George II was on the English throne when this was printed.

Offered for sale is this bold original artwork, created by Australian artist Jennifer Nichie in 1997. Based in Geelong, Jennifer is well-known as an art tutor as well as working artist. She studied Art & Design at the Gordon Technical College, and has exhibited in Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney.
From what may be a life-drawing study, Jennifer has skilfully used gouache and acrylics to offer a bold and stylised representation of the human torso. A strong and confident work, the use of green, black and blue toning combines perfectly with the negative space utlised - allowing for the strength of the posed figure to boldly express itself.

Vintage 20th Century (1972) original Australian screenprint by listed artist Robin Angwin

Offered for sale in this original screenprint by Australian artist Robin Dale Angwin (born 1947, died 1976). Robin’s printed works tend strongly towards abstraction and reference deconstructed, unrelated imagery as well as setting mood with firm tonal colour shifts. They often have an ‘architectural’ quality. Robin is recorded to have exhibited at Sydney’s Holdsworth Galleries in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Sadly his career was cut short in 1976 when killed in a car accident and is buried at the Werona cemetary near Daylesford. Number 33 of 100, printed in 1972 and titled ‘Assembly No.2’. Robin studied in Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s and was a painter, sculptor, printer and arts teacher.
In very good original condition. There is some very light occasional foxing to the paper but no colour degradation to the print itself. Has been printed on high quality ‘J Perrigot Archives Special’ cold-pressed paper.
