Vintage 20th Century original English ink-on-paper artwork

'The Old Mill' by L Ellis

Vintage 20th Century original Australian high kitsch pop art drawing of Kylie Minogue

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage Australian original artwork in pencil and ink-pen, most likely dating from the late 1990’s. Am unfortunately unable to attribute the artist.

In a fantastically high-camp/Roy Lichtenstein pop-art style the artist has created a portrait of Australia’s actual princess – Koiy-lee Minogue! The overall composition (especially the bold tears) strongly reference Lichtenstein’s famous ‘Drowning Girl’ comic-book style print of 1963. A great example of domestically-relevant high kitsch!

You can make up your own mind as to what our Koiy-lee is saying to herself.  fun and fantastic original artwork for any home or business.

In very good original condition. Will of course require re-framing and either trimming or replacing the mount card. Please note there is a slight depression in the paper to the right of Koiy-lee’s eyebrow but no tears – only Koiy-lee's tears LOL.

Measures (mounted) 52cm (h) x 35cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. As with any vintage watch I recommend allowing for a service. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

RARE Vintagte 20th Cent original Art Deco era signed

photography of USA actor Dick Powell

$195

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century signed photograph of American actor Dick Powell (1904 to 1963), most likely dating from the 1930’s. The photo was taken by famous Hollywood photographer Elmer Fryer and is reproduced on his marked gallery photopaper. Dick had an extensive career as a leading man throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s as well as becoming a director and eventual television studio head (he is also credited as the first actor to play Film Noir detective Philip Marlowe in ‘Murder, My Sweet’). Career photographer Elmer was head of Warner Bros Stills Department from 1929 to 1944 and took iconic studio photos of stars such as Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart.

A rare item to find outside of the USA.

Signed in fountain pen ‘To Mrs French “Best wishes” Dick Powell’.

The photo sits in what is most likely its original frame and glass mount (there is a chip and some fritting to the glass, and the lower clip is missing). The photo presents in very good original condition, with one small crease (in the left corner) and a small area of damage that could be addressed by a conservator.

Measures (framed) 35cm (h) x 28cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. RARE Antique/Vintage 20th Century Chinese cork sculpture/diorama Ruanmu Hua 软木画

$175

Offered for sale is this antique/vintage 20th Century Chinese (Republic Period) cork sculpture/diorama (Ruanmu Hua 软木画) set in a charming faux-bamboo wooden frame and most likely dating from the 1920-40’s. This is a rare find in Australia, given the fragility of cork and size of this particular example.

The design features classical Chinese philosophical interpretations of landscape - with water, buildings, trees, people, animals, sky and mountains combining to offer a vision of contemplation and natural harmony.

A wonderful way to bring positive Feng shui into any home or business.

Over time the work has patinated to create a unique and wonderfully soft, ‘watery’ quality.

Measures (framed) 43cm (h) x 33cm (w) approximately.

Reynaldo Ascencio

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original artwork on amate paper by Mexican folk artist Reynaldo Ascencio, most likely dating from 1970’s to 1980’s. Reynaldo is recorded as living in Ameyaltepec, Guerrero.

This bright and colourful painting depicts a stylised bird and unusual four-legged animal with a human face. A charming, enjoyable and happy piece - perfectly matched by the bold colours of its frame and mounting board.

In excellent original condition.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian watercolour by

Philip Luton

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original watercolour by Australian artist Philip Luton (1926 to 1996), most likely painted in the 1970’s to 1980’s. A successful artist in his lifetime, Philip graduated from Swinburne Technical College (Melbourne) in the 1940’s. He exhibited both as a solo artist and in multiple group exhibitions, with examples of his work being held by public and private collections in Australia and overseas. His later works heavily featured rural scenes (often along the Murray River).

This more unusual example of Philip’s artwork depicts an industrial building - what may be a flour, sugar cane or timber mill.

Measures (framed) 51.5cm (h) x 43.5cm (w) approximately.

In very good original condition.

ITEM: SE22002

RARE Vintage 20th Century (1947) original black-and-white press photo of Whistling Wind horse and Scobie Beasley(?)

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original press photograph, most likely of American thoroughbred racehorse ‘Whistling Wind’ and Australian jockey Arthur ‘Scobie’ Beasley, dating from February 1947. Whistling Wind is registered as being born 1 January 1943 (a four-year old when this photo was taken) and reported as being shipped to England for the 1947 race season. Arthur is known to have traveled constantly from Australia to the UK to compete and given his success adds weight to the attribution (however further information may clarify this). The horse rug is marked ‘HDP’ so this may assist identification of the horse stud.

The picture appears taken on an English beach, however lack of landscape features makes this difficult to ascertain an exact location. It is stamped ‘Kemsley Newspapers Manchester’ – one of the Allied Newspapers consortium that operated from the 1924 to 1959.

An interesting and historical decorative item for home or business.

In very good condition.

Measures (framed) 31cm (h) x 38.5cm (w) approximately.

ITEM: AU22035

Vintage 20th Century original Japanese artwork forest scene

$60

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original artwork, painted in Japan and most likely dating from the immediate post-WW2 (1945 to 1952) Period of Occupation. Australian soldiers were stationed as part a multinational force and many Japanese items returned to Australia with them as souvenirs of their time.

Unfortunately as I cannot translate the Kanji script, am unable to attribute the artist.

Using a skilful loose hand the artist offers a Post-Modern interpretation on the classical Ukiyo-E form of nature observation. In a quiet pine forest glade a woodsman carefully tends a small fire. Deliberately locating of the figure (highlighted using blue) in the lower right reveals smart intention as the eye then notices the woodsmoke slowly drifing through the gnarled pine branches. Taking us toward thoughts of nature and human endeavour. The work of a clever arist, making clever choices.

A very satisfying and contemplative original work of art.

In very good original condition.

Measures (framed) 31.5cm (h) x 26.5cm (w) framed approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

2 x Vintage 21st Century original Australian paintings by listed artist Paul Margocsy

$700

Offered for sale is this pair of original artworks by prominent Australian wildlife artist Paul Margocsy, dating from the early-to-mid-2000’s. Provence research confirms their authenticity/initial sale by Jenny Pihan Gallery and I’d like to recognise Jenny’s generous confirmation of this. Paul is a globally-recognised, collected and awarded wildlife artist with a successful career spanning over four decades. Incredible attention to detail means his stunning works are found in many private collections and public galleries worldwide. He is the only Australian artist to have been consecutively chosen to exhibit at the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum ‘Birds in Art’ exhibition in Wisconsin, USA.

The first work is an Australian Double-Barred Finch, the second an Australian Gold Whistler.

Both sit smartly in their stunning frames.

Each work measures 40cm (h) x 42cm (w) framed approximately.

ITEM: JL22022

Antique 20th Century original painting by artist N Crowther

$60

Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century original mixed media portrait of a young child, with an estimated date range (based on the clothing) from the 1840’s to 1870’s. Despite research, the identity of the artist and subject (if an actual portrait of an individual) is currently unknown however it’s most likely they are Caucasian in origin.

This charming (and definitely “Gothic” - given the style and current condition) artwork appears to be done by the hand of a highly talented amateur rather than professional artist. In a well-detailed (but slightly naive) style, the child has been portrayed having large, plaintive brown eyes, a rounded face with softly quiet expression and cherubic lips. The eyes are particularly noteworthy; as they seem slightly oversize and with their upwards gaze posses a mysterious ‘otherworldly’ quality – they attract your attention, and hold it.

Research indicated the style of clothing depicted appears as popular young childrens clothing (for either gender) from the early-to-mid 19th Century (open neck, high-sitting puffed sleeves and turned-lace collar). When conducting attribution research, it was noted that the paper appeared to be of thick, high quality weight (and possibly for watercolour). The image has been created using pencil, crayon, pastel and perhaps a small amount of watercolour.

Its overall style, quality, gaze of the sitter and heavily patinated state adds adds a great deal of charm and unusual, Gothic (even perhaps spooooooky) quality. You will not find another like this!

Please note (as pictured) there is foxing to paper and a light water stain (which a paper conservator could remove if desired).

Measures 35.5cm (h) x 28cm (w) framed (approx.).

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Antique 20th Century (1924) original oil painting by listed English/Australian artist George David Bell

$145

Offered for sale is this antique 20th Century Australian original oil painting by listed artist David George Bell, painted in 1924. From attribution research it may be presumed Bell was originally an English artist who emigrated. He then appears to have travelled through Tasmania and Victoria, painting idealised rural landscapes often depicting livestock beside water. One of his larger works has previously been auctioned through Christies.

This charming example offers a classical Australian river landscape (possibly in the Western Districts) with either a sunrise/sunset slowly occurring over a small mob of cattle.

Having remained under glass (and in its original frame) the painting is in excellent condition. Of interest is the signed backing paper (which will require conservation), as it has Bell’s signature and residence handwritten on it (he lists himself as living at 127 Little Collins Street, Melbourne – sadly demolished to build Stamford Plaza).

Measures (framed) 46cm (h) x 61cm (w) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian copperplate etching

by R David Hill

$125

Offered for sale is this Vintage 20th Century original copperplate etching by artist R David Hill, most likely dating from the 1980’s-1990’s and possibly a proof copy (as no numbering is allocated). This is the second work by R David Hill I’ve brought to the market and despite being an obviously highly-talented artist, at present no further information on them can be attributed.

Using two ink-tones it depicts a fantastical imaginary waterscape, with curious abstract foliage contrasting ducks and swans either gliding across a pond or hiding amongst reeds. The horizon possibly reveals other abstracted human and animal forms, as well as a building - the more you examine the work, the more there is to see!

A wonderfully engaging and successful original work created by a confident artist.

Measures (framed) 36cm (h) x 36.5cm (w) approximately.

Antique late-19th/early-20th original chromolithograph

'The New Baby' by Miles Birket Foster

$55

Offered for sale is this antique late-19th/early-20th Century chromolithograph print, most likely dating from the 1885 to 1910 and originating from either England or Germany. Taken from an original painting, 'The new baby' by English artist Miles Birket Foster (1825 to 1899), who became a popular and commercially successful Victorian era genre painter of romanticised landscapes, rural and social observation scenes. There is a small printer's monogram ‘FB’; unfortunately despite extensive research they cannot currently be attributed.

It depicts the popular Victorian subject of a young woman and child in a charming rural setting. The symbolism of a young baby, kitten, plentiful fruits and broom outside a cottage door reflect themes such as hard work, domesticity and the home, fecundity and social expectations of over 100 years ago.

Mounted in its original gilt wooden frame. There is no fading or damage to the print however the mounting card shows a small amount of water damage (and has been slightly reduced at some point in its history).

Measures (framed) 34cm (h) x 39.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: JN22004

Vintage 20th Century (1995) original mixed-media artwork by V Juka/Tuka

$175

Offered for sale is this Vintage 20th Century original mixed-media artwork on paper, most likely by an artist from (or descended from) the former Yugoslavia (possibly Croatian) and dating from 1995. Despite extensive curatorial research (and being highly talented), the painter ‘V Juka’ (or 'Tuka') cannot be identified further at this stage.

A powerful and dynamic work; created by a confident artist expressing great turmoil. On a purely superficial level, set within a dark landscape a spinning figure playfully twirls a hoop alongside a fenced path.

However when placed within the historical context of the Yugoslavian Civil War, it takes on deeper meaning and demands greater interpretation. The application of the media is telling - the artist has torn at, scraped and scratched the paper. A maelstrom roars over the twirling figure, caught dancing in their hoop with no way out (note they also appear to be disappearing from the waist down). The fenced path trapping the figure is ultimately blocked - another futile dead end. It’s no accident that the dancing figure is literally ‘stuck in the middle’ while chaos swirls around them. Everything within this work is deliberate, symbolic and clever.

A serious and profound artwork, with messages about conflict as current today as when expressed in 1995.

Measures (framed) 76cm (h) x 65cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Each features wonderfully cheesecake/hammy graphics and over-the-top taglines (‘Perfumed dynamite!’ is particularly memorable). The plot-line of ‘Plunder road’ might be a thin as Jeanne Cooper’s (almost holding on) blouse, but that’s not stopping them from ten million in gold!

Perfect for home or business decoration.

In excellent original condition, neither appear to have been folded or previously displayed. No tears.

Each measures (framed) 77cm (h) x 35cm (w) approximately. Ready to hang, nothing to spend.

Vintage 20th Century original artwork Christian/Spiritual/

New Age guardian

$45

Offered for sale is this Vintage 20th Century original mixed media artwork, most likely dating from the 1960-70’s. Despite research, the artist cannot be attributed at this time.

In a post-Modern style and using a blend of gouache, ink and watercolour the artist has depicted a bearded figure. This figure can be interpreted in multiple ways, from possibly a Christian icon (Jesus or a disciple), New Age spirit guide/guru or simple portrait. The work has a certain mysterious ‘other’ quality and an appealing glow to it. The longer you examine it, the more it reveals …

Measures (framed) 48cm (h) x 41cm (w) approximately. There are two very small tears to the paper.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century (1970) original Dutch etching by renowned artist Aart van Dobbenburgh

$375

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original etching by renowned Dutch illustrator Aart van Dobbenburgh, titled ‘34th portret von Marty’ and dating from 1969-70. Born in 1899, Aart developed an important career as both highly-talented artist and graphic designer working for various Dutch government departments and community organisations. He produced a powerful series of social-welfare posters, illustrations for editions of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky as well as stamp designs for the Dutch Postal Service. Unfortunately his work was overshadowed by his famous Dutch contemporary, M C Escher. Arguably Aart’s work and creativity is every bit as skilful, especially his sublime pencil work, portraiture and etchings. He was a master of recreating that most difficult of artistic expressions – the human hand.

His work is held in the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History) as well as in many international private, business and gallery collections. Having lead a fruitful artistic career over almost 70 years, Aart passed away in 1989. In 2016 a major retrospective of his work was held at the Dutch Museum of Lithography (see the Youtube link below). Signed and numbered 20 of 25. Framed in 1977 by G H Pelssers, Geelong.

This stunning composition features a favourite subject - his daughter Marty (aged 15 at this siting). Aart drew his first sketch of Marty as an infant and continued this into her mid-twenties. In amazing detail it offers a contempaltive snapshot of her as a confident and strong young woman. A moment of transition as she heads into adulthood.

Measures 64cm (h) x 52.5cm (diam.) framed approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century original Australian mixed media artwork by Olga Bogatcheva

$125

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original mixed media artwork by artist Olga Bogatcheva, most likely dating from the 1980’s. Despite intensive research (sadly the address written on the reverse and surrounding neighbourhood were demolished in the 1990’s), no further information on Olga can be shared at this time.

An obviously talented and confident artist, Olga has created a Contemporary still life featuring oranges, peaches and foliage. The colours are bold and complementary. No stuffy formalised bowls of fruit here!

A smart and satisfying original work of art, perfect for home or business decoration.

Measures (framed) 76cm (h) x 60cm approximately.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian watercolour

Crested Cockatoo by Heather Weiss

$175

Offered for sale is this 20th Century original watercolour painting by Heather Weiss, most likely dating from the late 1980’s to 1990’s. Despite intensive research and being an obviously talented artist, unfortunately no further information about Heather can currently be shared.

Showing skilful mastery of the difficult watercolour medium, Heather has created a most fantastic image of a Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo perched in a gum tree. And whilst being anatomically accurate this Cockatoo also has real personality - with a cheeky expression and knowing glint in the eye.

A thoroughly pleasing and enjoyable work of art for any home or business.

No fading, colours are bright and vibrant.

Measures (framed) 69cm (h) x 49cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian Tasmanian tooled leather picture by Roy Gilbert

$75

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original tooled leather picture, created by Tasmanian artist Roy Gilbert in the early 1980’s. Provenance research indicated Roy was one of the very early stallholders at the famous Salamanca Arts Centre markets in Hobart.

In great detail using an Arts and Crafts style, Roy has skilfully crafted a charming scene of two partridges in a … pear tree of course! The high level of quality found in this work would have taken many hours to create - I love the whimsical touch of realism with the falling leaf. Beautifully mounted in an arched frame.

Perfect for home of business decoration (especially if you’re a pear cidery!).

Measures 61cm (h) x 39cm (w) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century (1981) original English etching

'Crabbers retreat' by listed artist Graham Clarke
