Vintage 20th Century original Australian etching 'Tribal Mother' by R David Hill

$175

Offered for sale is this original etching by artist R David Hill, titled ‘Tribal Mother’. Sadly, extensive research hasn’t yielded much about this obviously talented artist, which is a great shame. Mostly likely dating from the 1980-90’s.

Showing great skill for representing the human form, in a contemporary style the work features four abstracted human figures (three adults, one infant). The artist has confidently demonstrated their talent by heavily working the plate, adding bold definition matched with a dynamic energy of movement. Another demonstration of their care and attention is the choice of quality Italian ‘Fabriano’ paper.

A strong work and would compliment any home.

Measures (framed) 46 cm (h) 40cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. As with any vintage watch I recommend allowing for a service. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

Vintage 20th Century original Chinese watercolour pandas

$45

Offered for sale is this charming original Chinese watercolour, most likely dating from the 1960-70’s. Despite research, the artist can't currently be identified.

Skilfully depicted is a happy scene of two Pandas, a mother and cub at play amongst bamboo. The artist has expertly captured both the form and entertaining nature of these delightful animals – each have their own character.

Regarded traditionally as symbols of friendship and peace, this pair of Pandas would make a delightful addition for any home or as a gift.

Measures (framed) 21cm (h) x 26cm (w) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century (1985) original artwork 'Ballarat skyline' by Peter B Bryan

$145

Offered for sale is this original watercolour and ink painting by Australian artist Peter B Bryan, created in 1985 (fully attributed on the reverse). Titled, ‘Looking toward the city’ (Ballarat). Painting since the early 1970’s (trained in watercolour by William Boutho and David Taylor; and acrylics under Herman Pekel), this work reflects Peter’s skill in the difficult medium of watercolour and his architectural background. In 1977 he was a founding member of the Ballarat Artists Society; with his works found in corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas.

Smartly depicted in sepia and olive/taupe tones is the Ballarat skyline (most likely looking west-to-east from Golden Point). Prominent heritage landmarks such as the towers of the Town Hall, Craigs Hotel and Old Post Office are suggested with a light touch of line and surrounding dark washes. A dynamic, clever and thoroughly satisfying work of art.

Measures (framed) 47cm (h) x 62cm (w) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century (1983) original Australian black-and-white photo portrait Nepali/Indian many by Peter Roberts/son

$95

Offered for sale is this original 1983 gelatin photograph by Peter Roberts(?) (signed on reverse). Only 1 of 5 produced. Despite extensive research, Peter remains elusive – although this image was framed using a high-quality, Melbourne-built FINI Frame so he may possibly be Australian artist.

The stunning image depicts an Indian or Nepali man, head swathed in cloth. And in spite of what externally appears a life lived hard, there is a joyous twinkle in his eyes and lightness of spirit eminating. This photograph will inspire and engage in any home.

Antique 20th Century (1904) original English print 'In love'

by Harry Baldry

$75

Offered for sale is this antique early 20th Century original Edwardian print, dating from 1904 and produced by well-known English printers Landecker & Brown (28 & 30 Worship Street, London EC). The artist, Harry Baldry, is known for producing a series of mawkish Victorian/Edwardian etchings around themes of love.

Titled ‘In love’ and printed in a sepia tone, the scene depicts a couple standing in a walled garden. The unintended irony of this work is the fact neither person is wearing clothing that matches the era of the other, and the outward gaze of the female figure seems to indicate a complete lack of interest in the potential suitor! Star-crossed lovers, I don’t think so.

Also of interest is the gender interpretation of the suitor – Baldry’s rendering allows for them being either male or female.

The print is in excellent original condition. There is a small loss to the frame that the asking price takes into account.

Measures (framed) 75cm (h) x 50cm (w) approximately.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century original pen and ink artwork of antique 1906 Cadillac K Model

$65

Offered for sale is this skilful vintage 20th Century original pencil, chalk and ink artwork. Despite extensive research, the obviously talented artist was unable be attributed (due to the difficulty in deciphering their signature).

Expertly sketched is a 1906 Cadillac Model K, with passengers side bonnet raised. And of course before Henry Ford dominated the automotive industry, it’s a right-hand drive!

A great gift or self-treat for any lover of antique era automobiles.

ITEM: AU21028

Antique early-19th Century (1807) original English George III fashion etching from 'La Belle Assemblée' magazine

by John Bell

$145

Offered for sale is this original early-19th century George III hand-coloured etching and line engraving by famous London fashion commentator and printer John Bell. Published in December 1807 as part of his renowned magazine, ‘La Belle Assemblée’ (or ‘Bell’s Court and Fashionable Magazine (London))’. One of the most important woman’s magazines of its time, it offered both English and Continental designs for the growing middle (and established upper) classes.

Amazing to think this was published during the reign of mad King George III and before the Battle of Waterloo!

The etching is titled, ‘Morning & Evening dresses in Nov 1 1807’ and depicts two women wearing elegant slipper dresses in what we might now call the ‘Jane Austen look’. Perhaps they're checking out that Mr Darcy across the crowded ballroom?

Importantly, this is one of the higher-quality versions (and more expensive) available at the time, as Bell produced a plainer (cheaper) version along with the coloured plates. Originally framed and sold in England (Yorkshire).

A perfect gift for any lover of Jane Austen or womens fashion.

Measures (framed) 39cm (h) x 29cm (w) approximately.

Born in 1942 and self-taught, Ken’s career as an artist started in 1968. Initially working as a painter, he also produces sculpture and is in collections both locally and worldwide. At the age of 80 he still makes new works that normally sell for well over $1,750 .

In his signature Impressionist style, Ken has depicted a pair of white cranes set in a swampy landscape.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian oil painting by Rose Bald

$125

Presented for sale is this original oil painting by artist Rose (Marion) Bald, painted in the early 2000’s. Researched indicated Rose is Australian and was born in 1913 and passed in 2002, and is mostly known for producing landscapes.

Using her signature Impressionist style and warm tones, Rose has depicted a series of stone buildings and statued courtyard garden with hedges set under a brooding sky. Judging from the architecture shown it may be of a medieval cloister, palace or village (in France, Italy or Spain).

Measures (framed) 57cm (h) x 73cm (w) approximately.

ITEM: AP21001

Vintage 20th Century (1972) original Australian screenprint 'Assembly' by Robin Angwin

$85

Offered for sale in this original screenprint by Australian artist Robin Dale Angwin (born 1947, died 1976). Robin’s printed works tend strongly towards abstraction and reference deconstructed, unrelated imagery as well as setting mood with firm tonal colour shifts. They often have an ‘architectural’ quality. Robin is recorded to have exhibited at Sydney’s Holdsworth Galleries in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Sadly his career was cut short in 1976 when killed in a car accident and is buried at the Werona cemetary near Daylesford. Number 74 of 115, printed in 1972 and titled ‘Assembly’. Robin studied in Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s and was a painter, sculptor, printer and arts teacher.

In very good original condition. There is some very light foxing to the paper but no colour degradation to the print itself. A small strip of faint water stain is at the bottom however this could be fixed with conservation work or would not be visible behind a card mount (which would be easy to have done).

Measures (framed) 54cm (h) x 64cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century (1984) original Australian watercolour of Tenowie, South Australia by John Illsley

$125

Presented for sale is this original watercolour painting by South Australian artist John Illsey, painted in 1984. Attempts to research John were impossible due to another John Illsley (bass player of Dire Straits) also producing art.

Using this difficult-to-master medium, John has expertly depicted the heritage architecture of Terowie. Once a booming town of over 2,000 people (and apparently the site of General Douglas MacArthur’s famous ‘I will return’ speech), Terowie is now considered a fascinating ghost-town located 220kms north of Adelaide.

In excellent original condition, no fading.

ITEM: MR21001

Antique 19th/20th Century original Scottish/English etching

of Loch Ard by B Davis

$35

Presented for sale is this original antique watercolour painting of Loch Ard by artist B Davis. Most likely painted in Scotland from the late 1890’s to 1920’s, with two potential attributions:

Benjamin Davis (Scottish, born 1869/died 1946)
Known as a well-regarded painter of atmospheric highland landscapes and everyday Scottish life in both oils and watercolour. The work may be a preparatory painting for a later piece in oil.

F E Jamieson (English, born 1894/died 1950)
Known for painting under a variety of pseudonyms, including ‘B Davis’.

Born in England but is celebrated for his depictions of Scotland. Travelling on vacation, Jamieson became inspired to reproduce the majesty of the mountainous Highlands territory and its many lochs. A prolific painter, Jamieson sold enough paintings to become popular and he was hired to detail furniture with his scenes. He was eventually forced to use pseudonyms to market his work (unbeknownst to his employers). Jamieson worked with oil and watercolor, but the majority of the Highland pieces were oil. His landscapes demonstrate a Victorian style, but the artwork's key features are multicolored skies bursting with light and power over gentle bodies of water. The images so appealed to the public that around 1920, Ajelli and Company of London reproduced them as postcards.

In good original condition, there is some light foxing, fading and two very small areas of loss that is reflected in the asking price.

Measures (framed) 43cm (h) x 53cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

ITEM: MR21002

Antique 19th Century (1857) original Australian etching of Moorabool Street, Geelong by S T Gill

$75

Presented for sale is this charming 1857 Samuel Thomas Gill print, ‘Moorabool Street from Myers Street, Geelong. A single plate from the larger collective work, ‘Victoria Illustrated’ (Sands & Kelly, 1857). Gill (born 1818, died 1880) is of course most famous for his depictions of gold rush life on the Victorian diggings. He lived a colourful life but died in poverty on the steps of the Melbourne Post Office.

Six years after the gold rush of 1851 denuded towns of their population, in incredible detail Gill has depicted everyday life in Geelong with small vignettes of activity such as (from right to left):

- A pair of stockings hanging on a building (maybe advertising ... well you can guess)
- Two men chatting away (one is the bullock driver of the cart to their left)
- Two women singing and playing instruments (the triangle and hurdy-gurdy) while an interested boy looks on. Possibly they’re singing temperance songs, in contrast to the activity of the building with stockings!).
- A sulky heading at speed down Moorabool Street
- A little dog harassing the horse pulling the sulky (dogs often featured in Gill’s works)
- At the end of the street, sailing clipper ships docked and the future of travel coming in to harbour - a steamship

In good original condition There is some foxing that is reflected in the asking price (a conservator could address this if felt necessary).

Measures (framed) 27cm (h) x 30cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century (1981) original Australian artwork by Brian McLennan

$95

Presented for sale is this vintage 20th Century original 1980’s Australian pencil and gouache artwork, on artists board. Created by Victorian artist Brian McLennan in 1981. Brian was a highly skilled artist who both studied at the Ballarat School of Mines (1963) and went on to work there as Teacher and Acting Principal. He is now remembered through the annual Brian McLennan Scholarship at the School of Arts, University of Ballarat:

The Brian McLennan Art Scholarship was created in recognition of the contribution made by Brian McLennan to the teaching of arts at the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat (SMB), now a campus of Federation University Australia. SMB had a long and proud history in teaching art, and Brian McLennan as a teacher, Head of Department and Assistant Director had a major influence on the teaching programs over the period 1976 - 1999.

Skillfully depicted in a naturalistic, contemporary style is a charming image of Australian bushland. Using a series of grey, green, silver, pink, rust, blue and white tones Brian has effortlessly captured the essence of the bush.

In very good overall condition. Please note there is a small amount of separation (but no tearing) at the top of the work - this should be a simple repair.

Measures (unframed) 72cm (h) x 51cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Vintage 20th Century (1967) original Australian artwork of Sydney terrace houses

$75

Presented for sale is this original 1960’s Australian ink and watercolour artwork. Created by ‘Dean’ in 1967 (despite extensive research, unable to to determine the artist). A clue to provenance may be the sticker on the rear.

Skillfully depicted in a Post-Modern style is what’s most likely to terrace houses around inner Sydney. These were a common subject for Australian artists from the 1950’s to 1970’s, especially as many were being thoughtlessly demolished due to ‘modernisation’.

Measures (framed) 48cm (h) x 65cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. 3 x Antique 19th/Vintage 20th Century original Asian artworks including Ukiyo-E by Uttagawa Hiroshige

$125

Presented for sale is this group of original antique and modern Asian artworks, from Japan and Indonesia.

For sale are:

- 2 x Ukiyo-E woodblock prints, estimated to have been produced between 1850 and 1899. Research attributes these to the highly-regarded and collectable master Uttagawa Hiroshige (born 1797, died 1858). Hiroshige is considered the last great master of Ukiyo-E landscape art.

They are both from one a series of ‘Views from/Travels to/Landscapes of’ books that often contained a compilation of up to 50 different views detailing a journey across rural/coastal Japan. Unfortunately as I cannot read Kanji am unable to translate directly.

The colours on both remain bright and have been obviously been kept away from strong sunlight. Attributing a more specific print date is impossible as when previously framed (in a style dating from the 1950’s) unfortunately the censor seals were removed (a small part of one remains, as pictured) and pages trimmed. Both have been cut down (not by me) to measure 11.5cm (w) x 16cm (h) approximately. There is a tiny amount of foxing.

- 1 x Indonesian work, most likely from the late 20th Century. This depiction of various gods, godessess and spiritual beings shows a highly-skilled use of negative/positive space created using pencil, pen and graduated shades of black ink. The work is produced on heavy quality art paper. Measures 36cm (h) x 26cm (w) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. 'Torquay Harbour' by listed artist Henry G Walker

$75

Offered for sale is this charming original print by renowned English artist Henry G Walker (1876 to 1932), most likely dating from 1921 to 1932. Titled ‘Torquay Harbour’. Henry became active as an etcher from around 1921 when he first exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Art Society. To make a living he concentrated on popular architectural and topographical plates in various combinations of soft-ground etching, dry-point and aquatint (both coloured and monochrome). He produced over 150 designs during this period, more than half of them of places in the South-West of England. He was particularly successful with studies of harbours like Tenby and Brixham with their trawlers. As the 'etching boom' of the 1920s began to recede with the onset of the Depression, he seems to have started to experiment with ink-and-wash designs for reproduction as coloured prints. Walker moved to Babbacombe in Devon in 1929 and set up his studio in a new house, but the new venture was cut short by his early death in 1932. Signed in pencil ‘Henry G Walker’.

Henry's skill is evident in the highly-detailed and accurate rendition of the Torquay waterfront and its environs.

LARGE Vintage 20th Century (1971) original Australian oil painting 'Barrow Creek' by Bob Tindall

$150

Offered for sale is this quality original 20th Century Australian landscape oil painting by well-known and collectable Queensland artist Robert (Bob) Tindall and dating from 1971. Bob's specialises in stylised images of the outback, vanished ‘classical’ Australian landscapes and architectural memory. Influenced by post-Modernism, Bob’s works have a heavy impasto style with imagery reminiscent of Boyd, Nolan or Hart. Often with a heightened ‘Australian Gothic’ quality they evoke dereliction, vastness and the open waste of the outback. Signed, titled and dated ‘Barrow Creek N.T. by Bob Tindall 1971’.

Using a Post-Modern style with bold and powerful colour tonal structure in yellows, oranges, reds and browns, Bob had captured a tortured and desolate image of the remote Northern Territory settlement of Barrow Creek (including its historical Telegraph Station).

Definately more post-apocalyptic Mad Max savagery than 'See you in the NT' cuteness!

Measures (framed) 70cm (h) x 101cm (w) approximately.

$95

Offered for sale in this original screenprint by Australian artist Robin Dale Angwin (born 1947, died 1976). Robin’s printed works tend strongly towards abstraction and reference deconstructed, unrelated imagery as well as setting mood with firm tonal colour shifts. They often have an ‘architectural’ quality. Robin is recorded to have exhibited at Sydney’s Holdsworth Galleries in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Sadly his career was cut short in 1976 when killed in a car accident and is buried at the Werona cemetary near Daylesford. Number 33 of 100, printed in 1972 and titled ‘Assembly No.2’. Robin studied in Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s and was a painter, sculptor, printer and arts teacher.

Vintage 20th Century (1986) original Australian seascape

oil painting by Mary Jamieson

$125

Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th Century original Australian landscape oil painting (on board), painted by talented artist and dancer Mary Stuart Jamieson and dating from 1986. Born in 1927, she is reported (The Age, 24 October 1953) to have studied for five years at the National Gallery of Victoria as well as attending art classes in London (during her 22-month overseas tour studying dance in Europe). As well producing high-quality sketches, Mary’s ouvre often expressed itself in Impressionist-influenced landscape paintings of maritime/coastal subject matter (possibly influenced by The Newlyn School). The work is signed on the reverse (hard to read), “Jamie” Mary Stuart Jamieson (along with an address in Melbourne, possible postcode 3161).

Using warm tones and in a confident, loose Impressionist hand the work smartly depicts a coastal scene including sweeping sandy bay, a prominent rock formation (which may hold the clue to its location), grassy dunes, hills with dotted houses and distant mountains.

Possible settings include: the Cornish/Devon coastline (given her time in England), within Australia (the Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula, Wilsons Promontory, southern NSW) or (less likely) Bodega Bay (California, USA).

In very good original condition. There is some light patination and one small loss (which could be conserved if felt necessary), appropriate for this being a proper vintage item and not modern reproduction.

Measures (framed) 45.5cm (h) x 62.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century original Australian landscape oil painting of Lyndoch/Barossa vineyard by June Colligan

$125

Offered for sale is this charming vintage 20th Century original Australian landscape oil painting by artist June Colligan (born 1934), most likely dating from the 1980's to 1990's. Titled ‘October near Lyndock’. Based in South Australia, June is noted as both a talented artist and art teacher. In 1988 she won the Campbelltown Art Prize as well as being shown at the Royal South Australian Society of Arts (RSASA) gallery. Having participated in multiple solo and group exhibitions, June is known to have worked from a large studio at her home. Her ouvre expresses itself in Impressionist landscape and still-life works. Signed on the reverse.

Using a warm tonal palate and confident, minimal Impressionist style (with heavy impasto) it depicts a row of vines in the foreground and rising view of the ranges east of the town of Lyndoch within the world-famous Barossa Valley wine-growing region. Despite research, the actual location of the vineyard it depicts could not be determined.

There’s a wonderful cursory and bold energy to this piece, with its strong colour choice and deliberate brushstrokes creating a satisfying Post-Modern/Contemporary original artwork.

In very good original condition. There is some patination to the glaze (mostly seen in the sky), and some very small occasional loses (which a conservator could easily address if felt necessary).

Measures (framed) 37.5cm (h) x 52.5cm (w) approximately.
