2 x Vintage 20th Century West German pressed copper

deer wall plaques

$30

Offered for sale is this matching pair of vintage 20th Century West German decorative pressed copper wall plaques, most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s.

Each features a nature scene with deer (one with a doe and buck, the other a buck only) set amongst pine trees.
A fun bit of designer-kitsch for any home or business.

Both are in very good original condition. There is some light patination, which reflects these being proper vintage pieces and not modern reproductions.

Each measures 28cm (h) x 12cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. As with any vintage watch I recommend allowing for a service. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: MA24009

Antique 18th Century (1788) George III etching 'Rejoicings of the Mexicans'

$95

Offered for sale is this rare antique 18th Century English original copperplate etching, created during the reign of George III (in 1788) by Alexander Hogg (16 Paternoster Row, The Kings Arms). Originally published as part of ‘A New and Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels (John Hamilton Moore, 1788) which contained plates of Australia, New Zealand, North/Central America and Tahiti. Active from 1788 to 1805, Hogg is most famous as the original publisher of Captain James Cook’s journals; and also notable as producing popular magazines and maps as well as prints and etchings (both under his own name and various pseudonyms). Before its destruction during the WW2 London Blitz bombing, Paternoster Row and immediate area was regarded as epicentre of London book publishing.

Possibly the only example available in Australia.

Titled ‘The Rejoicings of the Mexicans, at the beginning of the Age’, the bucolic image attempts to (with a wild degree of artistic licence and cultural ignorance) portray a scene of rejoicing and worship. Men, women and children are seen dancing to the beat of two drummers, rattles and a horn whilst in the background priests/shamans make offerings to the music of flute-pipes. With its (for the time understandable) blend of secondhand, from-across-the-ocean-informed attempt at cultural accuracy (some of the clothing and accessories do appear vaguely Central American), combined with Neo-Classical Revival palladian temples it’s definitely more ancient-Greek-meets-Regency than correct representation of any particular ceremony. However with depicting the rising sun (over the ocean), it does accurately acknowledge the importance of sun-worship for many South American tribal nations (eg the Aztecs and Mayans).

The current context for creation of this image must be seen through the so-called ‘Age of Enlightenment’/Euro-centric lens of the time (we know better now).

In excellent condition for being 236-years old. A previous owner has had it professionally mounted and made ready for framing. There is an area of water-marking to the lower right corner of the mount (which in my opinion is oversized and would be better reduced anyway) that has not affected the etching.

Measures (mounted) 50.5cm (h) x 57cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: FE24037

Vintage 20th Century original Australian cross-stitch

dog artwork

$30

Offered for sale is this fun vintage 20th Century Australian-made cross-stitch artwork, estimated as dating from the late 1980’s. The maker is unknown, however the work was framed by a Ballarat firm that opened in 1988 (around the same time ‘53’ was added in front of local phone numbers).

In a bright and cheerful style (that looks like a pixelated 1980/90’s computer/8-bit image) the craftsperson has carefully created a happy brown dog with hanging tongue set in a forested background. The breed could be an Irish Setter, Spaniel or Labrador.

Every hipster home or business needs one of these!

In excellent condition.

Measures (framed) 41cm (h) x 33.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: FE24036

Antique 19th Century French hand-coloured lithograph

of Christ

$225

Offered for sale is this antique late-19th Century French hand-coloured religious lithograph, published by Bousse Jeune et Cie (of Paris) and decorated/signed by the original artist ‘J Cariati’. Despite extensive research, little is currently known about Cariati - however he is recorded as producing other religious-themed etchings (and given his output appears to be entirely works on paper, is most likely not the Italian-American self-taught religious medallion artist Giovanni Cariati (born 1865/died 1917)). This particular work is known to have been available as a sepia-toned lithograph. Bousse Jeune et Cie was founded in 1867 by Emile Bousse-Lebel (the son of a religious printing firm owner) and continued operation producing religious materials until the mid-20th Century.

At some point in its history the work was retailed through an Australian Piety Shop, the Catholic Art Gallery (located at 365 Little Collins Street, Melbourne). This business and its address was extensively researched and unfortunately no record exists showing when in operation, however given the style of frame and fact The John Bull Hotel operated at this location from 1885 to 1920, it seems most likely to be during the 1920’s to 1930’s.

What in particular lifts this elegant piece of art towards an outstanding level of quality is the sensitivity, subtlety and skill demonstrated in its delicate colouration. Using a soft, warm tonal palate the image of Christ (with stigmata, Sacred Heart and golden halo) combined with a fine level of detail (seen in His hands, hair and robes) has produced an enigmatic, realistic quality - particularly the eyes, which are deeply engaging and contemplative.

A powerful artwork for respectful veneration or decoration.

In excellent original condition. The lithograph was carefully removed for inspection during attribution research and to enable cleaning the glass. There are some exceedingly tiny small foxing marks on the face of Christ (which could be professionally addressed by a paper conservator if felt necessary).

Measures (framed) 37cm (h) x 28.5cm (w) x 4cm (d) approximately.

ITEM: FE24026

Vintage 20th Century original Australian paperbark artwork with aboriginal figure

$75

Offered for sale is this rare vintage 20th Century Australian paperbark, dried floral and teatree artwork, made post-WW2 by J Wilson and most likely dating from the 1950’s to 1970’s. Despite research, further information on the artist can’t be provided at this time.

Importantly, set amongst an outback landscape (of jagged hills, broken rocks and sole gum tree) a realistically-drawn figure of a bearded aboriginal man carrying what may be a decorated shield and bundle of spears is walking, perhaps hunting. He has been created on a separate piece of paper.

As nearly all examples of this type of work depict purely landscapes (occasionally with kangaroos or emus) this is a highly-interesting and unique example that incorporates and recognises Aboriginal culture in a way that’s not over-stylised or simplified tourist-ware. This piece is something special!

In excellent original condition.

Measures (framed) 28cm (h) x 33cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Due to weight and risk of damage during freight, local collection only or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Where possible (or upon request) a physical inspection is available and always encouraged. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand item is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase - as any sale is final.

ITEM: JA24044

Vintage 20th Century Italian/Spanish galleon on velvet kitsch

$45

Offered for sale is this fun and funky vintage 20th Century novelty/kitsch galleon mounted on brown velvet, most likely dating from the 1960’s. Despite research the maker is unknown but most likely European in origin (perhaps Spanish or Italian).

Set in an ornate frame, the design features a great side-on view of a stylised 17th/18th Century 3-masted galleon (set with 3/4 sail) riding some frothy waves.

Great designer piece for any retro-loving, Mid-Century Modern home or business.

In very good original condition. There is some very gentle patination to the velvet but no tears/moth holes. The price takes this into account.

Measures 56.5cm (h) x 48.5cm (w) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

ITEM: JA24021

Antique early-20th Century (1913) original Pears Soap chromolithograph poster advertisement

$45

Offered for sale is this antique early 20th Century English late-Edwardian era ‘Pears Soap’ chromolithograph promotional poster, dating from 1913 (when published (as one of three) in their Christmas Annual series). Taken from an original oil painting, ‘Pets’ by English artist George Sheridan Knowles. Knowles became famous for his highly-detailed, slightly-sentimental historical and genre scene works - which were often subsequently used in advertising (especially in the late-Victorian/Edwardian eras). Pears Soap produced many high-quality advertising posters from the 1880’s to 1920’s.

The scene depicts two young girls enjoying the company of their pet white rabbits. A charming and bucolic moment, reflective of the strong social messages regarding childhood (innocence, purity, etc) prevalent at the time.

A happy work for any home or business.

In very good original condition, has been mounted on board (found when was removed for inspection). The colours remain bright and as intense as when new. At some point a previous owner has cut down the work to fit in a smaller frame (estimated to have been done in the 1970’s). There is some patination (very small loses, small creases) but importantly no staining. The price takes this into account.

Measures 49cm (h) x 38cm (w) approximately.

Please check the pictures as they form part of the item description.

ITEM: JA24020

Vintage 20th Century original Greek Parthenon handcarved  wooden Outsider Art/Tourist item

$45

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century hand-carved (in relief) decorative wall hanging, most likely made in Australia (as a piece of Outsider Art) or Greece (as a tourist item). Probably dates from the 1960’s to 1980’s. Despite research the maker is currently unknown.

Utilising a thick slab of hardwood the artist has created a stylised relief carving of the instantly-recognisable World Heritage Listed Parthenon Temple, found on the Acropolis of Athens. There is a good level of detail, including a side view of the Temple of Athena Nike and distant hills with rising sun. Supporting this is a classical Greek meander border.

Perfect gift for any lover of ancient history or person of Greek descent.

In very good original condition, ready to hang.

Measures 33cm (h) x 43cm (w) x 4cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can post at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Accurate as possible description at time of listing, however like any secondhand watch it may need a service, and is sold without guarantee or return so please ask any questions before purchase (as any sale is final).

2 x vintage 20th Century watercolours by artist S Teh

$30

Offered for sale is this pair of unframed vintage 20th Century Australian original watercolours, painted by artist V S Teh and dating from the early 1990’s. Despite research, further information on the artist isn’t available at this time.

The first (dated 1991) depicts a blue weatherboard single-fronted weather board Victorian cottage. Unfortunately the location isn’t known, however given the curve depicted on the curbing (which look like bluestone) it’s possibly located at the end of a court. Measures 28cm (h) x 38cm (w).

The second is a charming representation of an abandoned rural farm homestead and outbuildings. Measures 19cm (h) x 28.5cm (w).

ITEM: DE23011

2 x Vintage 20th Century original Australian watercolours of Melbourne terrace homes by Wendy Harrison

$85

ffered for sale is this pair of vintage 20th Century Australian original mixed media artworks, created by Wendy M Harrison and most likely dating from the 1960’s to 1980’s. Despite research, further information on the artist isn’t available at this time – however their style and signature bear a striking resemblance to similar works by Victorian artist Wendy Rees-Harrison. So perhaps (for whatever reason) these may have been created by her but using a different surname?

Using an open and rapid style, their attractive design captures a charming representation of two 19th Century Melbourne terrace buildings. The first is Park View House, located in Delbridge Street, Fitzroy. The second is Avoca House, found in Park Drive, Parkville.

Exciting, both these homes remain standing today and in the same external condition as painted.

Both paintings are in very good original condition.

Each measures (framed) 28.5cm (h) x 24cm (w) approximately.

ITEM: DE23010

Vintage 20th Century (1961) original Australian artwork of the Newcastle Ocean Baths, NSW

$40

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century Australian original watercolour artwork, dating from 1961. Despite research, further information on the artist (Frank Handluf/Handlum?) isn’t available at this time.

In a charming naive style it depicts the iconic Newcastle Ocean Baths, located on Shortland Esplanade. Since their construction in 1920’s these famous baths (currently under renovation, hopefully reopening for Summer 2023) have provided recreation and exercise for tens of thousands of Novacastrians.

A fun and historically interesting original work of art.

In very good original condition, the colours remain bright and fresh.

Measures (framed) 31cm (h) x 36cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: DE23009

Antique 19th Century original German School chromolithograph by Hermann Wunderlich

$75

Offered for sale is this antique 19th Century German School chromolithograph by German artist Hermann Wunderlich (1835 to 1915), most likely dating from the 1880’s to 1899. Not much is recorded about the artis, but it appears he was born and lived in Dresden his entire life. His ouvre appears to have been romantic landscapes, nature scenes and historical architecture in the German School style.

This example of Hermann’s work combines both his interest in historical architecture and the natural world. In a highly-romanticised manner he has created a misty winter landscape complete with frozen river, distant turreted Baroque castle (possibly a fantasy although may be based on an actual one) and stag deer searching for food amongst the icy foliage. This scene most likely would be ‘set’ in southern Germany eg Bavaria.

The antique (most likely original) frame is another great part of this item, with its highly-detailed rope-twist border and inner Baroque-styling (in gold gilt).

Together the original frame and print form a unique ‘faded Gothic’ time capsule and highly attractive decorator’s item.

Both the chromolithograph are in a gently patinated condition (which actually forms part of its charm and confirms its authenticity as a genuine antique and not reproduction).

Measures 73cm (h) x 42cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century (1989) original artwork

'Toad In The Snow' by Sally Torpy

$60

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original mixed media artwork by Victorian artist Sally Torpy, dating from 1989. Despite research, not much is currently recorded about Sally however it appears she was active in the town of Ballarat during the late 1980’s.

Titled ‘Toad in the snow’, using a Post-Modern/Abstract style Sally has created a most charming image of a toad perched in a snowbound abstract landscape. What’s also wonderful about this is the artist’s note attached to reverse, indicating it was originally part of larger work but appealed so much they chose to frame it separately.

A wonderfully expressive, endearing and satisfying work of original art.

Measures (framed) 19cm (h) x 14.5cm (d) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: DE23003

Vintage 20th Century original German etching of

Herrider by Tower Richard Adler

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century German hand-coloured etching by listed artist Richard Adler (1906 to 1977), most likely dating from the late 1940’s to 1960’s. Little is know about Richard, however his ouvre expressed itself through highly-detailed images of historical buildings and sites across Germany.

This charming example of his work depicts the Herrider Tower in Ansbach (Bavaria). Formerly the old city gate (before the town expanded in the post-medieval period) the centrally-located tower with its distinctive domed roof is a lovely example of Ansbach’s many late-Medieval/early-Renaissance buildings. Of interest is the daily life captured in the image - with individuals and families all going about their business (I especially like the cyclist).

In excellent original condition.

Measures (framed) 45cm (h) x 34cm (w) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century original Australian oil painting by listed artist Stephen Deutscher

$245

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original oil on masonite-board artwork, painted by German/Australian artist Stephen Deutscher (born 1947 in East Berlin) and most likely dating from the 1970’s to 1980’s. Stephen migrated to Australia in the early 1960’s before embarking on artistic studies under Jean Sindelar, Hugh Sawrey and Richard Bogusz. His ouvre is mostly reflected in Impressionist depictions of the Australian Outback landscape.

In Stephen’s signature style, this charming work captures a quiet moment in the Kimberley Ranges with a trio of brolgas at play in the evening twilight. The motif of brolgas (often with accompanying aboriginal figures) is one that features prominently in his works from this period. Stephen has also smartly expressed the underlying oxide red of the North Australian landscape as well as the soft, fading light that arrives with the rising of the moon and slow change to darkness.

A satisfying original work of art.

In overall very good original condition, please note there is a mark (as pictured) that a conservator can address if felt necessary. The asking price reflects and allows for this.

Measures (framed) 68.5cm (w) x 59.5cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. ITEM: DE23001

Vintage 20th Century (1994) original copperplate etching falling angel

$95

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original copperplate etching artwork, dating from 1994. Despite extensive attribution research (and the artist being highly talented) no further information can be offered on them at this time. Their signature can be interpreted as possibly T H (or J H) Froom/Troom/Groom. Numbered 26 of 50.

This striking image may reference (or been influenced by) an etching by Salvador Dali, ‘Flight and fall of Icarus’ (1963). Central is the figure of a male angel, supporting and holding a child whilst reaching towards a woman (also holding a child). Both are clothed in modern garments and appear tumbling/falling from a cloud. It is of important artistic note that the face of the male (despite being set at an angle visible to the viewer) has been rendered in a blurred, slightly mutated fashion – he remains unknown to us. Likewise the female figure, who has been shown facing upwards (but again away); so both key players are unidentifiable. Also telling is their grasping towards the other in an attempt at salvation, but there is no contact or implied success evident. It seems to be suggesting their efforts are doomed to failure.

A powerful and intriguing original work of art.

In excellent original condition, a previously owner has had the work professionally framed to a high quality.

Measures (framed) 47.5cm (w) x 42.5cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century (1969) original Mid-Century Modern artwork mixed media on board

$225

Offered for sale is this exciting vintage 20th Century original mixed media on board artwork, created in 1969. Despite extensive research, the identity of the artist (with signature ‘CH’ or ‘HC’) remains unknown. Attribution research has identified it as being framed by Hawthorn Galleries (Number 3566). In 1970 this business (operated by a ‘Noel’) is listed as operating from 556 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn – another piece framed by them has allowed for a reproduction of their label (for reference).

A strong and bold work created in a semi-Abstract/Post-Modernist style, the artist has confidently used a dynamic and rapid hand to create an energetic streetscape. Given the rapidity it demonstrates, this has most likely been painted ‘en plein air’ and on location (the architecture indicates most likely in Europe and potentially France, Italy or Spain). Their choice to leave areas of raw board as unfinished (adding texture and a warm tonal background) is another sign of obvious talent and confident technique.

A thoroughly satisfying Mid-Century Modern work of art that will create a dramatic highlight for any home or business.

Measures (framed) 62cm (w) x 53cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Cash or direct deposit sale only. Can freight at buyers expense (must include insurance for damage or loss) or can personally deliver to Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat CBD’s for a fee. Vintage 20th Century (1970) original painting by listed artist

Bill Offord

$145

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original mixed media painting by listed English/Australian artist William (Bill) Offord and dating from 1970. Born in England in 1944 and migrating in 1967, Bill has worked in both painting and sculpture over a 50 year artistic career. His ouvre has focused primarily on images of rural life and historical subjects across the Eastern States of Australia. This particular piece has had an interesting history, apparently being sold and taken to England - where it was framed by C W Atwell of London (134 High Street Wandsworth, SW18 4JP). Then at some point it’s made its way back to Australia!

This enjoyable work depicts a bearded blacksmith hard at work in their forge. There’s some attractive golden light which casts long shadows, creating a contrasting atmosphere with the illuminated figure surrounded by tools of their trade and hammering at the anvil.

A great gift for any blacksmith, lover of history or Lost Trades.

In very good original condition.

Measures 33cm (w) x 48cm (h) approximately.

Please check the photos as they form part of the item description.

Antique early-20th Century (1905) original German photolithograph 'A Summer Shower' by Edmund Blair Leighton

$95

Offered for sale is this high-quality antique early 20th Century German photolithographic sepia print of English artist Edmund Blair Leighton’s ‘A summer shower’ (1896). Research indicates this was produced in December 1905 as a supplement to ‘Weldon’s Illustrated Dressmaker’ magazine (the printer is most likely Neue Photographise Gesellschaft A.G. - which operated from 1862 to 1921). Weldon’s is famous as being the first large-scale English commercial fashion pattern-making company, operating from 1879 until ceasing manufacture in the 1950’s.

Considered a Pre-Raphelite artist, Edmund Leighton (1852-1922) gained fame and popularity as a painter of highly-romanticised historical genre scenes (especially set in the Medieval and Regency periods). With a fastidious attention to detail and focus on heightened drama, these both appealed to and reflected Victorian/Edwardian social values and tastes.

This high-quality print reflects Leighton’s ouvre pefectly. Set in Regency England it depicts the frisson (but at the same time/context, socially acceptable) and possible consequences of a young man offering an arm and umbrella to a young lady caught in a summer rainstorm. Departing the village church with a group of very interested (nosy) onlookers and grumbling chaperone trailing behind, there’s all sorts of hidden messages about behaviour and societal expectation – if you care to look.

All very nice and neat on the surface, but underneath we know it’s about to get all Mr Darcy folks! Will they date? Is he a cad? Will the young lady get her book published?

In very good original condition.

2 x Antique 18th/19th Century original English George III/IV architectural etchings

$85

Offered for sale is this pair of Georgian/Regency antique 18th and 19th Century English architectural copperplate etchings.

The first was published on 1 May 1783 (during the reign of George III) by Samuel Hooper and engraved by Daniel Lerpinière. This was originally created in serial form for ‘The antiquities of England and Wales’ (Francis Grose, London, 1774-1787). A quality etching, in high detail it depicts the remains of Hyde Abbey (a former Benedictine nunnery) in Winchester. There’s some amusing observations noted; at the time it was obviously being used for a working barn - there’s a farmer forking hay from the building as well as a large bull standing outside. In excellent original condition, especially for being 240 years old! Measures (framed) 21.5cm (h) x 26.5cm (w) approximately.

The second etching (with original hand-colouring) was published by Owen Browne Carter and engraved by John Le Keux in the 1830’s (during the reign of George IV). It shows the medieval Brethren’s Hall, located within the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty in Hampshire. The oldest (founded in the 12th Century) and considered the finest example of an Almshouse in England, it still accommodates and cares for 25 residents (called ‘Brothers’) to this day. The etching shows a group of Brothers seated and enjoying a meal. In very good original condition. Measures (framed) 25cm (h) x 26.5cm (w) approximately.

Antique 20th Century original Australian maritime watercolour of the barque 'Raupo' by Frederick Elliot

$195

Offered for sale is this charming antique early 20th Century original watercolour by the renowned English-Australian maritime artist Frederick James Elliott (1869-1949), estimated to date from 1916 to 1923. Born in Devon, as a young teen Elliott emigrated with his family to the (then) colony of Queensland in 1876. He eventually worked as a lithographer for the Government Printing Office. Moving to Sydney in the 1900’s Elliot travelled extensively along the East Coast; taking this opportunity to create preparatory sketches of sailing ships, steam vessels and harbourside infrastructure for use in later works. A popular and prolific artist, his works were publicly exhibited in NSW and Queensland with many now being held in private, public and corporate collections.

Built in Dundee (Scotland) in 1876 (coincidentally the same year Elliot migrated to Australia) by John Key & Sons (actually their first vessel) the three-masted iron barque ‘Raupo’ was originally registered as ‘Peru’ then ‘Louisa Craig’ (from 1907) before her final name-change in 1916. In 1923 she was sold as a coal hulk and ceased working under sail until finally towed and beached in 1937. From 1907 to 1923 she had sailed extensively as a cargo ship between New Zealand and Australia.

This unusually large work by Elliot depicts the Raupo in full sail, with a single-funnel steam vessel approaching. The work strongly references the famous painting by Joseph Turner, ‘The Fighting Temeraire’ – with its depiction of the modern Steam Age taking the Age of Sail into obsolescence. And with the patination that’s occurred over time, this watercolour has taken on a unique and charming ‘faded grandeur’ – adding another layer of visual interest and connection with the smoky skies/smutty light that characterise the works of Turner.

A wonderfully evocative original artwork, perfect for the maritime collector or any beachside home/business.

In good original condition. Over time some foxing has occurred (and one very small loss) which a professional paper conservator could address if felt necessary. There is a small amount of fading. The price takes this overall condition into account.

Measures (framed) 73.5cm (h) x 53.5cm (d) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian oil painting

dancing clown

$95

Offered for sale is this original 20th Century Australian oil painting (on USA-made Morilla canvas board) by H Lang, dating from the 1950’s to 1960’s. Despite extensive research there is very limited information available on the artist – who most likely lived/worked in the Geelong area (as another of his works is held by the City of Greater Geelong in their collection). At some point this work has been framed by/for an ‘M Mackie’.

Using a wonderfully expressive, naive and energetic style, the dynamic and strong portrait of a performing clown has been created. Dressed in an oversized, comical flowing red and white pompom costume they are depicted surrounded by bubbles and performing with a hoop.

As with any work of clown art, there is a slightly disturbing Gothic, dark edge – this clown has an almost manic feel to their body position and two-toothed facial expression. Intentional or not, with large clown shoe poised and ready to plant forwards they look as if they’re about to leap from the canvas. And into your lounge.

Perfect for any lover of Gothic or clown artwork. We know you’re out there. So do the clowns.

In excellent original condition.

Measures (framed) 35cm (h) x 25cm (w) approximately.

Vintage 20th Century original Australian etching by

artist/illustrator Judith Rossell

$145

Offered for sale is this vintage 20th Century original copperplate etching by Australian artist, illustrator and writer Judith Rossell and dating from the late 1990’s. Judith is well-regarded as a highly-talented and respected illustrator of over eighty childrens and young adult books (as well as writing fifteen of her own books). Her 2015 ‘Withering-by-Sea’ was awarded the Indie Book prize (for Childrens and Young Adults), along with receiving several other major awards and important shortlistings. The etching is signed by Judith (as number five of only eight) and originally framed by Barrie Jeffreson’s Frame Rite (Glen Iris, Melbourne). An an early work this provides insight into the experimental phase in Judith’s artistic development when exploring a variety of media. It provides an insight into her unique style that’s been retained, honed and expanded over an extensive creative career.

The work consists of an evening scene with an overall ‘Australian Gothic’ feel. The left third features a ramshackle Victorian weatherboard cottage perched on a hill, with lights dimly lit against the dark. This is surrounded by misty, ghostly swirls that drift and twist amongst broken trees, indistinct rocky forms and stunted shrubbery. It shows great balance and clever use of negative space.

A dynamic, enjoyable work of art.

In excellent original condition. A previous owner has expensively framed this charming work.

Measures (framed) 39.5cm (w) x 42cm (h) approximately.
